I always pick normal aggression. Since I barely handle normal at the level I play, I'm not going to try a more aggressive ai.

I do wonder what happens at lesser levels of aggession. Does the ai only produce defensive units, never declare war, forgive all transgressions, or make peace real easy?

The aggression levels affect the inheirent aggression levels for each civ. It raises or lowers it according to the setting. So a high aggression civ, like the Zulu's or Aztec's, will act like a less agressive civ, like india.

That's the limit of my understanding of it. Someone else can explain it more in depth, I'm sure.

on my first game of Monarch, I set it one level below normal to help 'ease the gap'. Otherwise, normal.

I have it on normal, too. Mainly because I´m used to it and thus can easier predict what´s going to happen. Higher aggressiveness doesn´t mean higher difficulty though, as the AI is also more aggressive against other AI-civs. Actually, the more the AI is at war with itself, the easier it might get!

I play Normal. My dad plays more agressive, so that it's harder to play a peaceful game.

I play on normal.

Normal. Only because I am too lazy to change it.

Less agressive. I still get attacked, but I think the AI are more polite upon first meeting...less likely to make insulting remarks.

Most agressive -- makes for more interesting games. Anything on normal and below, the AI just sits there, waiting for you to clean them up with your cavalry. Atleast with agressive, the AI actually tries to conquer more land. (It's actually because they want revenge on the civ that attacked them. All it takes is for 1 war to trigger the domino effect big time on this agression level).

BTW, low agression on the lowest levels pretty much breaks the AI. They just don't expand right. On higher levels, you wind up with run-away AIs. (then again, there was one run-away AI (60% land), that quickly lost to an AI with 20% land -- a OCC game I played).

Most agressive.I do not like the ai to go into builder mode. It is better if it is in Monarchy or a Republic with lenghty wars than a peaceful republic all of them piling up techs with their special discount club. It is also easy to make them declare on you for breaking some expensive deals :mischief: and getting war happiness. Lastly the only advantage the human player has in the higher levels is the incredible military genius of the ai. I love exploiting it to the fullest

I find it does not make a great difference in the games i play. I usualyy just select normal but i often go for most aggresive.

Might be a PTW feature too, I don't remember exactly.

You can edit this in the editor, for at least PTW.

less agression, makes for nice periods of building and stockpiling :)

Seriously, it has almost zero effect on the game anyway. Or do you really say a game with default Mongols, Zulus and Germans is necessarily more brutal than one with Indians, French and Carthage?

Of course, the MIL Civs are more aggressive early - but hey, that's because they have superior military according to their Military Advisor.
Not even the AI would consider the 12 French Warriors 'strong'. But Bismarck's 8 Spears and 4 Archers are it indeed.
And, the naturally aggressive Civs also have matching build preferences - India will still prefer culture, even with AL5.

In short, that whole thing is completely overrated in my eyes.
