Hi Folks,

Have been reading these forums for a while... my first post though. :D

Just wanted to post about a very interesting game I have going on (see screenshot below).

Level: Noble
Speed: Normal
Map: Large, low sea level, continents
My Civ: France, Napoleon
Victory conditions: Only conquest or domination, everything else turned off. Need 64% land, 48% population
Options: Aggressive AI, No culture flip of cities. No tech trading (so AI cannot gang up)
AI Rivals: 6 AIs, Peter, Roosevelt, Isabella, Musa, Mao, Tokugawa

Since there is no time limit, game goes on until sombody achieves victory conditions. There are 3 continents approximately same size. Since sea level is low, land masses are very big.

- Peter and I started on same continent. Of course, I wiped out Peter using axemen before Medevial times. That gave me about 30% land.

- Since I got involved in early war, by the time I got to astronomy... other AIs were far ahead in tech race (mech infantary etc). :mischief:

- By the time I built decent navy, all others had had modern army except Japan. Wiped out Japanese in 2nd continent by 2000 AD. Now I got 40% land. :goodjob: Roosevelt was other player in this continent but his land is not enough to give me victory. Waited for some opportunity to develop in 3rd continent.

- 3rd continent had Mao, Musa and Isabella. Converted to Mao's religion to bring his diplomatic status to Friendly :D . Of course, Isabella had problem with that and she declared war on Mao and me :mischief: Chinese conquered two of her cites, I captured 6 others (spanish wiped out). However, Musa felt neglected and declared war on me taking 4 of my conquered cities (he is good at war :goodjob: ). Dropped 3 nukes on him in frustration

- Convinced Mao to declared war on Musa while I signed 10 turns peace treaty with him :mischief: Chinese really handed it to him in these 10 turns and bombed him to stone age (pillaged every single tile). Now I am back in war to claim my share of land. Musa's empire will be split in half and now I will reach approx 55% land (still not enough for victory).

- Time has now reached 2098 AD and I have played for 65 hours. Game is still going on... may be climax will come during culture war with Mao or an all out war. Roosevelt has built huge defences and just wants to stay away from dirty politics of land grab :D Although he is friend of Musa and is annoyed with me, he does not have uranium. In case he jumps in, few nukes will bring his morale down.

I am pleasantly surprised by the depth of regional politics and world politics in this game. Since these victory conditions are hard to achive in a continental map in modern times... it brings out the best and worst in every body :goodjob: Nobody gets to win by staying defensive. Once tech race is over it turns into game of war strategy and politics / alliences. Two thumbs up for the aggressive AI option.

sounds like a sweet game you have set up there. havent ever tried it on just conquest victory, ill have to check it out sometime. How do you find the naval combat in the game, are you finding the AI is using it alot more since your on continent map?

Musa gave me good surprises in naval combat and sank some of my battleships :( Once his surpise attack was over, I first had to establish naval superiority before I could send reinforcements thourgh transports. He sent few transports full of units to attack my mainland... all of which I sank in ocean. Running recon mission every turn to remove fog of war from battle zone is a must.

His land war was relentless ... use of stealth bombers quite impressive... reduces all my units to half strength before taking them out. I lost 3 of my conquered cities in one turn, each of them defended by 4 modern armour or mech infantary. I had 15 stealth bombers.. he managed to intercept 3-5 every turn. He had me on ropes for few turns before I could bring in Mao into equation.

It is nice to know that civ4 can be played as a turn-based strategy wargame at the end of tech tree. It is like a brand new game !!

Interesting story.... keep it up!

First Memo from Royal Office of Empror Nepoleon:

For any citizen of the new world who cares about the end result in this game, French got domination victory in 2147 AD. You are invited to the victory parade in capital... no scribes allowed though. :king:

After 80 hours of play and almost constant war, Empror's war weariness is at all time high. The soldiers yearn to go back to their homes, get married and have babies. The military accountants has presented the following statistics:

Number of cities in empire: 63 (built 25, conquered 38)
Mech Infantary killed: 127 (lost 21)
SAM Infantary killed 79 (lost 7)
Longbowman killed: 40 (lost 0)
Modern Armor killed: 41 (lost 48)
Gunship killed: 43 (lost 20)
Artillery killed: 44 (lost 14)
Jet fighter killed: 40 (lost 20)
Destroyer killed: 30 (lost 4)
Battleship killed: 16 (lost 10)
Stealth bomber killed: 29 (lost 47)

Mr. Mao has accepted the position of Military General in empire. Mr. Roosevelt prefers to remain a trader and supply hit movies. Mr. Musa was last seen leaving with a settler on a transport, some believe he renounced worldly pleasures and became Monk after watching carnage in Modern war. Isabella's missionaries are looking for him in case he wants to convert. :worship:

The astronomers have confirmed that sun always shines in France.

Since it took 100 turns more at normal speed to reach domination, this game should have been played at epic speed. This map is simply too big to get enough land by 2050.

Signed and dated 2148AD,

With Royal seal,
Napoleon.

So by simply turning off the "Time" Victory, can you continue past 2050AD? I tried turning off the "Time Victory" once but it started to count down the terns at 1950AD like usual, so I quit.

So does it really work or do you need a mod to make the game continue past 2050AD?

I have not used any Mod. Just disable all victory conditions except conquest and domination. I did not get any count down.

You can have "endgame" at the start or middle of the game too. Pick the era you want to start in. Future starts you with all techs except the future techs. Depending on the Era you choose to start in, your cities start with buildings and already have a few population. You also start with workers and a small selection of units related to your starting era. There are so many different ways to play the game :D

Yup. Why build all those stacks of modern weapons if you don't get to see some action.

I have same issue with ICBMs. Why build them if you are never going to use them and they don't give you an edge in diplomacy. I still remember the mutual destruction caused by the modern wars in Civ II. I used to sit and wonder after the Civ II wars - was it worth it!!!!

CivIV played with default conditions feels more like sterile builder's game.

"Isabella's missionaries are looking for him in case he wants to convert"

thats just hilarious :)

I personally don't like the modern warfare part of the game one bit.
For me nothing beats the feeling of having a stack of catapults and an army of swordsmen and axemen on a bloody rampage.

i prefer to have some icbm's to launch on a rivals stack of doom after he captures a city i dont care about (so i drop the nuke on a neutral square beside the city)

and it feels great to have your stack of doom capture the pyramids from alexander, nothing beats that.
