List of Useful and Free Software v2

Is this being kept up to date? :P

A couple of my favourites that I've not spotted in the main list:

NetBeans IDE (development) - Powerful IDE that supports many languages and frameworks, including Java, C/C++, Ruby and Ruby on Rails.
OpenTTD (entertainment/games) - Open-source clone of the Microprose classic Transport Tycoon Deluxe, a game I really enjoyed alongside Civ when I was younger
7-Zip (utilities) - reads almost any compressed format and saves to the main ones, including its own (.7z) which has a high compression ratio.

is therea free progrem that will let you keep track of what files and foldirs will need to be keep backd up to an externil. becuse sometimes i move files to a subfoldur and end up with a lot of duplicites and files change and i dont know what needs replaceing or not. possible a syncing progrem.

Stop posting. I mean it.

When you have a concussion, you need to rest. That means go to bed, sleep, and then sleep again. Stop posting for a week. Hell, pretend the world doesnt exist for a week and just sleep.

1. Get some sleep. Now.

2. If you're running a Windows platform, I suggest the Microsoft Synctoy.

Integral's freeware tips of the arbitrary time-period, now annotated:

CCCP (video playback) - have I plugged this recently? One-stop solution to video playback. Includes FFDshow, Haali, and the Media Player Classic-Homecinema player. Decodes avi/mkv/ogg containers; h264/x264/xvid/divx video, and virtually all audio codecs. Extremely handy. Alternatives: k-lite codec pack. CCCP is much more lightweight, though.

Code::blocks (development) - my C++ editing environment of choice. I never had any good experiences with Visual Studio. Alternatives: my roommate swears by netbeans.

vim (text editor) - One step up from Notepad++. When I was running a Linux box, vim was my go-to text editor. It comes with built-in syntax highlighting for a variety of languages; it also has extremely powerful editing tools. Takes a bit of getting used to, but well worth the effort. Alternatives: notepad++ and emacs.

MikTeX (LaTeX) - I'm pretty sure everyone on Windows who uses LaTeX knows about MikTeX by now, but it's worth repeating. Also, MikTeX 2.8 and later comes with the handy TeXworks editor, so there's no need to install a front-end.

Found my new favourite free application yesterday and now I will never be without it again. It is absolutely brilliant, although do note that it only works with Windows 7, and certain functionality is only available if you have a compatible network adapter.

I now have my iPod and Nokia phone connected to my laptop's access point (accessible throughout my flat) which gets internet through my Uni residence over ethernet (firewalled to the max, of course). It's the first time I've been able to do this, and all because a friend and I were having problems with internet connection sharing being dropped sporadically when we were playing Team Fortress 2 through my VPN with him connecting to me via an adhoc wireless network through which internet connection sharing was enabled. Connectify made it all so easy.

Connectify - quickly and easily turns your computer into a wireless access point through which you can share your internet connection - even an internet connection arriving through the same wireless card.

In the other thread i mentined i used ffmpeg i didnt really use ffmpeg as i kept screwing up the command line as usual so i atually used a gui here it is
http://avanti.arrozcru.com/
to use it you need to download a windows build of ffmpeg and put it in the ffmpeg folder in the program folder but if you have it in another place on the computer you can tell it that

hmm, I guess. But why would you need to rar it, just zip it :p

Well I don't know why people bother using WinRAR in the first place. Most everything these days is compressed anyway (music, movies, pictures... even PDFs and such), and the things that aren't compressed are usually so small that it doesn't matter whether you compress it or not. Zipping only has value for packaging up lots and lots of files into one single file for convenience's sake. So whatever advantages the RAR format had in compression are meaningless in this age of ubiquitous fast internet and unlimited data storage.

/pointless ramble.

Well, I use it when uploading stuff, y'know.
