Playing on monarch and it's not going well. Trying a standard map, 8 civs and I didn't edit anything.
My problem is two-fold. I can't expand or research as fast as AI civs and once I fall behind in army size I'm constantly harassed.
My question is what do people concentrate on early? Previously I could work on settlers and improvements, making the minimum number of military units - a spearman in each city, a few warriors exploring, and very few early workers, particularly if I'm industrious. Then I'd get a couple wonders and if someone attacked I could defend while I built up an army to retaliate.
Now I need to build up quickly, reducing the number of cities and amount of land I control, seriously delaying improvements and haven't even started a wonder in a while, and build enough workers to completely optomize every city right away.
Is this typical? Is there something I'm missing? It seems I'm barely hanging on - forced into military action or to just give away gold as tributes - and fighting exclusively defensive wars with as many as five other civs at once (and I try to make nice, I just don't have anything they want besides cities.)
