Little questions & answers thread

maybe a stupid question (again) but do players ever leave leave resources un allocated for the gold and happiness. I admit as a not very good player as I dont really study the detail and the maths of everything, with resources, I tend to just lob them into any city or town that will take them.

But then im thinking, if slotting them into towns gets me something that doesnt really grab me, am I best just leaving it in the resource pile for the +2 gold and +2 happiness?

Also, on the latest version, I cant remove resources from cities. previously there was the same 'empty box' on the left hand side and if I clicked on a resource that was already allocated and then clicked on that it would be unallocated. now I cant seem to un allocate them. EDIT ignore that. was definitely not working and then the minute I posted this it was working again.

Playing on PS5 sometimes the Resource menu stops working and I have to back out and re-open it. Maybe similar thing happened to you.

I have done that with Jade, Incense and Pigs before. If I dont have a city where the first two are impactful I will take the gold and happiness. And if I'm not pumping out units Pigs (truffles) can be useless too.

You have to improve a new resource before you can move any you already have, maybe that was why.

I only ever leave resources unallocated when i run out of available slots.

have the rules about being forced to declare war to civs that your ally is at war with changed since the game came out ?

I’ve been automatically refusing all alliance offers for quite a while because of this, got bit a few times when the game came out with accepting an alliance and finding myself at war with 3 civs because of it.

Today I got hit at the end of antiquity with sudden war declaration from a civ I was friendly with, the dominoes came down and I suddenly had 5 civs at war with me… this has happened to most everyone I suppose…

but then Himiko offered me an alliance and I accepted it, figuring she would then declare on the 5 warring civs… she was hostile to all of them anyways… To my great surprise she didn’t declare on any of them ? I rechecked and she was STILL allied with me, but she never declared on the others ! I’m quite certain that if the roles had been reversed, I would have found myself at war with all civs unless I decided to break off the alliance…

What gives ?

Had she been at war with them recently and made peace? She may not be able to declare.

hmmm... she WAS hostile to 4 of them and already at war with the other....

Still it would seem to be too much of a coincidence that this would have been the case for FOUR civs, no ?

But, your explanation is certainly very logic !

EDIT: Installed Slothoth's Global relations panel mod for fun and reloaded last turn in antiquity before switch to Explo... Turns out that Himiko had not yet met one of them, Amina. So that now leaves only 3 civs that she didn't declare on, since she was already at war with Rizal. And all 3 are in a Alliance Triangle.
So to be honest, your suggestion is making more and more sense,as she could very possibly have been in recent war with all three of them... thanks

I customize my game options with all those fancy new possibilities after the 1.2.2 patch and then I save my options.
Is it true that the map seed is automatically saved as well and when I load those option I get the EXACT same game?
(...which would mean that saving the options is basically pointless unless you change the map seed manually after reloading)

If you load a saved config it loads the same identical map with resources, discoveries, and start position exactly the same. If you want these to be different you then have to click restart, which changes these and shuffles any leaders set to random but keeps your other config settings.

That… seems like a step backwards from what we had in VI? I used the hell out of config saves back then, precisely because it kept all the settings while not constraining map generation.

It basically still does that you just have to click restart after loading the config.

Anyone else experiencing a lategame lag like the one we had some time ago after a previous patch?
Saving and reloading makes it a little better but it feels like the same problem Civ7 had about two months ago.

Is there any reason I can't buy a cog in a town directly on the coast? Can I only buy them in cities? I'm guessing I need a fishing quay first, but this town is directly on the coast.

Having the same issue after prolonged game sessions, culminating in game crashes. I initially dismissed it as my PC not being able to handle Large maps, but you may be onto something.

I don't think you ever could do that without a Fishing Quay (Cities/Towns) or a Shipyard (Cities). Even if you settled literally on the coast. This is different from the Harbor/Navy rules in Civ VI.

In my opinion, there are situations in which you don't want to slot resources. For example, Pearls in Modern give you +6 Happiness in the capital and +3 Happiness in other cities. But if you don't slot them, you get +3 Happiness and +3 Gold. So if the capital is already full (and I'd rather put silk in those capital slots) but your other cities still have slots open (and have no immediate happiness problem), you may not want to slot it and be better off. However, there are some bonuses that give you extra yields based on slotted resources. If you have some of those, you may want to slot the resource anyway.

I have three Camels, but my current slots aren't full, so I'm using them for 2 gold 2 happiness each right now (in Exploration).

There are trade routes in spades. Its a weird map. I have tons of empire resources like gold, spices, silver ect but only a handful of bonus and city resources coupled with 2 Camels in my territory along with more i can trade for.

Yeah the RNG is so bad, unless it is the distinction between bonus/cities/empire resources that is absurd. (Both I would say : the distinction between three types of resources is absurd, unsolicited and useless - another aspect you have to let slide away -, and it is even worse with such mad RNG.)
