[GS] Livestreamer Previews Discussion Thread

Even in months of constant sunlight, areas near the poles receive very little solar energy since the sun is always near the horizon and travels through much more atmosphere than warmer climes. I would guess solar collectors aren't allowed because of that (though of course I'm no expert either :p).

Something I didn't like so far is how they seem to have added tons of new sources of era points but doesn't seem like they did any balance change, which mean it will be even easier to streak golden ages and even more impossible to get a dark age unless you do it on purpose. Even doing it on purpose might get harder now. I honestly don't understand how Firaxis don't see that as a problem. At least for me dark ages barely exist as a mechanic, I only interact with it when the Ai get one. Same for Heroic ages, it's not even a thing.
I agree some balance is needed. 12 and 12 as the base thresholds are too low. I've been paying around with a mod that increases tech/civics costs, raises the ages thresholds to 18, and increases era length - it works well enough that I don't always get golden ages; you probably wouldn't want to increase it that much without the other tweaks.

I think they should also increase the penalty for how much cities you got and how much golden ages you got. If you get a golden age streak, it should give a specially nasty penalty that make it really hard to get another and likely to get a dark age in the next era.

I forgot how painful it's to watch other people play. Quill18 just started a wonder on a wood tile and didn't harvest the wood, with Magnus in the city. What kind of monster does that?

Quill is just horrible, can't watch him. It's not that he plays fast, but he plays carelessly. Like going all "I want more XP on scouts", an scout gets promoted, there's a goody hut he can't reach, he parks the scout next to it and sets it to move to the goody hut WITHOUT USING THE PROMOTION! Jesus, I facepalmed and closed the video. He plays almost like if he doesn't care.

Quill18 completed a quest from Hattusa and got its suzerain but the strategic resources UI only updated when he ordered a wonder to be built in his capital as you can see here. So if you get Hattusa but nothing happens, don't worry, the UI seems to update when you do an action like ordering something to be built.

The other scout also met China without promoting when he knew he would meet China if he moved.

The tile he settled Toronto gave me a small heart attack. I have nothing against settling cities 3 tiles close when you have a good reason to do it but good lord, he could settle up river, get more territory from China, better access to floodplains, which will be boosted by flooding, still get his precious coffee and add a cotton tile on top of it, all that while increasing his distance to his capital.

Edit: I also have some serious issue with how he completely ignore diplomacy. I guess he is so used with the AI being aggressive in early game on deity that he doesn't even bother.

I always aim for a Medieval Era dark age, and even when I hit a Classical Era golden age I find it very difficult to purposefully avoid rolling into a normal era.

In Potato's second video his embarked warrior is surrounded by 3 barb Quadriremes and getting attacked. His warrior ended up getting killed, i've never seen the AI use barb units this way.

I would think this would just change the angle at which the panels are installed. At the extreme poles, the earth definitely absorbs less heat energy from the sun (a self reinforcing thing as it also reflects off the white surface more). I didn't think it would affect the light waves that trigger the photovoltaic reaction in solar panels (might not have that term correct). Genuinely curious now. May have to do some research.

EDIT: not only do solar panels work in the far north, they work better than they do in more southern climes as they operate more efficiently in cooler weather!

EDIT #2: @FXS_MisterKevin can we make this my official plea to drop the restriction against Snow terrain from the new Solar Farm improvement? :)

Why are all live streamers playing on Emperor difficulty? Presumably because Firaxis told them to.

Is the AI most optimised on Emperor difficultly?

Possibly they don't want to scare away potential casual gamer customers? The early Deity game is a bit stilted due to the AI's extra settlers (exploration pretty much doesn't happen) and the early Deity AI Warrior rush might give viewers the wrong idea of the sort of experience they'd have with Civ 6.

Ruling the world from a globe-spanning 21-city Phoenician empire is more on-brand with the intended Civ 6 experience.

What's the penalty for breaking a promise? Since to me, I'm always going to say "I'm sorry for sending my apostles" for some sweet sweet free favour.

Grievance is a new mechanic introduced in GS that ties in to diplomacy. It essentially acts as a buffer for aggressive actions.

Say you ask an AI to not settle near you. The AI agrees (gaining some diplomatic favor if they do). If the AI then settles near you, you gain some grievance. You can then declare war and conquer that city, consuming that grievance. So you won't be viewed as a warmonger by anyone as you did something viewed as just in their eyes.

In your case, telling the AI that you are going to continue to proselytize will provide them with grievance against you. Watch out.

Stuff like this is why I could never, ever be a live streamer :D

You people would have a heart attack watching me play literally ANY game.

"BUT ERIC MY GOD YOU'RE ONLY 4 TILES AWAY FROM... AND THERE IS AN SUPER OPTIMAL TILE ONLY... MY GOD DO YOU EVEN KNOW THERE ARE BUILDERS IN THE GAME? ... SWEET LORD BABY JESUS SEND DELEGATIONS... DO YOU REMEMBER DO BUILD UNITS AT ANY POINT? HOW HAVE YOU NOT BEEN OVERRUN BY CITY STATES?"

Quill18 has released 4 videos so far of Canada gameplay. He's made it into the Renaissance. No sign of the Ice Hockey Rink.

So basically, don't build any Tundra cities before the late game unless there's a rich patch of strategic resources. At least by the late game Farms won't be terri-bad on Tundra.
