Ljosalfar Archers

Yeah, I tend to laugh a little bit when anybody tries to fit a timescale or a distance scale to the game. Each element requires a scale all to itself if you want to place any sort of realism to any of it. Just accept that everything is abstracted and let it go as whatever plays well (ie - those of you who say that an archer cannot fire across an entire square, why cannot 2 opposing factions occupy such a large area at the same time?)

I think the debuff to non-elves is too much as they essentially get two buffs then, one from non-penalized archers and one from Woodsman I/II.

Leave things as they are and give Ljoso archers access to Woodsman I as a promo... that's the best solution IMHO.

all elves should have access to this promo, as someone here suggested

I'm curious, how often do people take the woodsmen promotion? Outside of very special circumstances, I always fine combat a better value. I'm begining to wonder whether I've overlooked a strategic argument?

When playing either elven race, I give woodsman to EVERYTHING. It's the first promotion any and all units, (except city defenders) are given, before anything else.

so... I use it a lot. Thusly the inability for archers to use it saddens me

The only time it really finds use for me is as Ljo/Svalt.

I use it extensively when not playing as them too, though. Forest is absolutely everywhere, at least with the erebus mapscript. I always give woodsman to my starting scout, first and foremost. And usually to most recon units I build. I'll also give it to a couple of melee units if there's a lot of forest around my territory, because I do like keeping it for the health bonus

For tactical purposes though, when not elven, I'll usually cut down any forest in the 8 adjacent squares around any city, so I can attack out.

I always give Woodsman to the lizard civs, too, since it affects jungle and deep jungle strength too. Especially since deep jungles will grow on city tiles.

All "realism" and "tactical" issues aside, from a gameplay perspective it seems strange that the elven territory is covered in 'forts' for pillaging barbarians to occupy, and that the Ljosalfar specialty (archery units) is particularly weak in these circumstances. Any buff to elven archers or elves in general in forests seems like a good idea here. Personally I'd give all elves an extra +25% attack (not defense) in ancient forests, offsetting the extra +25% defense enemies would get compared to being in a normal forest, so that elves suffer no offensive penalty when turning their forests into ancient forests.

Replacing the flat bonus with enhanced fortification would seem to answer these concerns. If the elves let the enemy take time to dig into their land, its their own fault.;)

With the ranged attacks for archers and a separate ranged attack power, shouldnt Ljosalfar Archer class units get +1 ranged attack power, same as they get the +1 attack power right now?
