LK125 - Warlord, Carthage, Oasis, Monarchy

Trade

Canceled our stone trade with Rossey and instead sell it to Sally for 10 gold. DO we want to build the UoS? If so, may want t do it fast ... only sell stone to those civ without Philo. My opinion is it is not worth it, since we are already teching much faster than the rest. But 2 beakers per state religion buildings is quite tempting, so I have no objection if someone decides to go for it. Personally I'll give it a pass.

Cities Management

I am surprised by the decision to build NE in capital. It is a waste to have capital as GP Farm ... and we already have so much cottages there that it may be a waste to change them all to farms. GP-Farm should improve nothing but food ... Since it is done, I will suggest we shift our capital.

There is also no specialists being added there ... what's the point of NE then? I started 2 scientists there, and chopped rushed the university. So it should be able to support more scientists now. I am having an aqueduct started there to remove the food leakage. Next step might be to get a market up to add merchants.

Someone started a barracks in out buddhist holy city. Why? I let it completes, since it is halfway done. Later I chopped rushed a market.

Tech

We got Philo and I have liberalism learnt with 1 turn remaining. Switched to gunpowder for grabbing Chemistry. AFAICS, no one have the ability to learn Liberalism yet.

We may want to trade for guilds since it (1) enables banking, which is useful for our cottage heavy and holy city, (2) enables grocery, which helps or economy and health situation, and (3) adds hammers to workshop which I started in our HE city.

Religion

One or two auto spread of bud in our cities, so I only need to waste one bud miss on our own. The others converted one city each from Mansa and Sally. Every city in our empire are now buddhist.

War

Sally came asking us to declare on nappy again, which I declined this time. Why? We should focus on killing Zulu first, to relieve our cities of the return to motherland crap. For that, I have troops assembling in the south:

Somehow, Shaka shifted his defenses, thus we have a stronger force going for a weaker city :crazyeye: so the next player may want to move a treb and a mace from the eastern stack over to the western stack.

1160 AD
I also don't understand the NE in Carthage. We have way to many tiles getting close to towns. I am not willing to wipe them out just to run more scientists.

Saladin is a really nice friend and gives us $320.
(IT) Roosevelt adopts mercantilism, so we know at least one civ has banking.

1166 AD
(IT) Nappy just became a vassal of Saladin. We have a monster on that side of the map.

1172 AD
It is time for our own war horns - round two vs. Shaka begins.
The fact that Shaka moved 2 longbows out of the u city had nothing to do with it.

1178 AD
We capture the town now know as ShortU.
(IT) We lose a meaningless archer next to ShortU.
We get liberalism, and take chemistry for free. Research begins on Nationalism.

St. Louis has a revolt in favor of us.

We got another scientist.

1184 AD
Our scientist will complete most of printing press, and I let him to so to improve the economy. I swap to printing press needing just two more turns.

Unlike ShortU, our bombard units know how to retreat at Kwa. I wipe the Zulu out this turn.

1190 AD
I try to trade for guilds, but the price is absurd.

1196 AD
(IT) I go back to research on Nationalism.

1202 AD
 Roosevelt must have culture bombed St. Louis. We lost control of our ONLY iron source.

1208 AD
(IT) Spain expects us to give up Monarch for $20. :rotfl:

1220 AD
I get away with demanding $170 from Spain.

I picked up guilds, compass, $480, and wm for education. I forgot to write down whom I got it from.
We are building up a nice cash reserve for emergency upgrades.
(IT) Saladin is a tech monster, as he just switched to universal suffrage.

1232 AD
(IT) Mansa would like as much, as I refuse to become Taoist.

=======================
Summary:
Keep sending missionaries to Saladin until every single on of his cities are Buddhist. I really want to have a friend in this game. I don't want him switching to his own religion of Islam.

We need to decide how to win soon. With Saladin's pop percentage, I don't see us winning via backdoor domination. We aren't setup for culture. With the amount of dead desert, I suspect domination will be very difficult with building worthless trash cities that will never pay for themselves.

IMHO that leaves conquest or space. How does the team feel? I am starting to build a nice stack along the Spanish border.

:rotfl:

After looking at all the horses from the stable at the gates of Santiago, I think I can take a hint!

Had a quick look at the save and noted that Mansa will convert to Buddhism. Do we want him to do so? Would shore up our northern border and should remove a local target for Sal: he'd cut through him like a knife through butter.

Cheeky culture bomb from Roosy. Should we reclaim what is ours after the Spanish campaign? IIRC correctly, we can't build Cannon without Iron, but we can build Artillery without it...

And Sal isn't such a tech beast: he has Pyramids. Also, I think he razed the Confucian holy city during his war with Boney! We're can almost certain that he'll stay Buddhist: it's on really in Better AI that a Civ will spam itself with a religion it owns.

As for Spain, I think we should take her holy cities (and Santiago) then review.

Finally, I think Space would be the easiest way forward to victory (unless Sal has all the Alu).

Such a nice expeditionary force you have built for me

First things first

Some healthy

Then some missionary work

Then reclaimed the cash and opportunities for more (which was a mistake as five turns later he went Free Religion on me but I bribed him back into the fold again)

After some buildings went up and the economy roared back into the black I relieved Isabella of her spare change and Santiago

and marched straight down the hill to Barcelona

And then look what I found

Isabella made a feeble counter attack in the north

while the army marched on to Madrid, which is now in our hands with troops posed to move on to the Christian holy city.

A general appeared and built a Military Academy at Utica, while Cetawayo worked on the Globe Theater.

ShortU really got the short end of the stick when it came to worker assignments so some have moved down that way to make some improvements there is some indigo down there we could use

Elsewhere we kept churning out the missionaries and have converted all the Arabs and all but one of the Mali cities. There is a missionary on the way to the Mali Confucian town in the very far NW. Carthage has been training the missionaries needed to convert the Spanish towns as we capture them.

Economic buildings are going up (grocers and banks) all over and we can build a Forbidden Palace in the location of your choice (Ulundi might be good)

There is this monster in the corner, though

Saladin keeps getting stronger and stronger, though he still lacks contemporary troops. He is sending Camels through our territory to hunt barbarians in the far east.

I did detour through Music after Nationalism for the culture points in newly captured cities then set the scientists to work on Replaceable Parts. Then picked up Economics and more of Mansa's cash for Nationalism and Gunpowder. We should spread Economics around as soon as we can for the Free Trade benefits.

There is something unsettling about the pace of technological discovery. Even with Mali in the pack it seems almost glacial.

It just may be Mansa will spread some joy into Arabia, but the Arab has no trade bait.

After Rifles Steel, Steam and Railroads, I should think while we send our army to chew through Roosevelt.

Isabella will capitulate if we wish. She must have sent her troops to the east to kill barbarians because she has had no more than three defenders, and those archers and spears, in the cities taken including the capitol.

As for victory, I think conquest would be a fitting close by making vassals of Roosevelt and Mansa and crushing the Arab.

Nice turnset, though the highlight for me was popping an Iron. Nice to see one can be good and lucky!

I did detour through Music after Nationalism

Did we start building Taj? With our empire size it would more then pay for itself. Not to mention the last thing we need is Salidan getting a GA!

Did not start the Taj. Cetawayo would be a nice place for that as it is our biggest hammer producer right now.

And Saladin has had so many GA's that they are hard to keep track of. He keeps birthing those Great People and going gold.

I would let Mansa build it, rather than us. He needs a jump start to his economy to gen up some stuff for us to buy. We are booking along quite nicely without a GA IMNSHO.

I'm up. I'll load when I'm back at my civ computer later this evening and then post a Got It.

Before I play my set a major team decision may be required: conquest or space. If going for conquest then vassalising Isabella saves us the turns and sundry units we'd use in annihilating her. If going for space its probably better to polish her off and probably say no more war.

Izzy's so feeble that we might as well polish her off for the XP...she's not even got Feudalism, so casualties should be minimal.

Seeing the poor tech rate of the AIs makes me think that a conquest win might be more enjoyable than self-researching all the Space techs.

I took three cities, including the capitol with no casualties. The trebs and cats were going in with 90%+ win chances, while the grenadiers were over 98%, after the defenses had bombed down of course.

So bring up the greenest troops we have and finish her off.

My vote is to finish off Spain. Vassals are pretty much useless from what I read, so I would rather us have more productive cities.

Where do we want the FP? That is still an open question.

I though Monarch was harder under Warlords, but I still haven't felt much of a challenges. Of course, if Saladin turned on use early...
At this point, it is looking like conquest saving Saladin for last. At that point we should verify that domination isn't pratical before we go after the big boy.

Got it.
Looked at it. Couple of things occur to me. First we're researching rifling and I'd rather be researching steel because steel gives us cannon and also because rifling is a staple AI tech and we'd be able to get it through trade. Second our civics:HR, bureaucracy, slavery, decentralisation and OR. We've got free trade and mercantilism available; if we're going military (and we should be if aiming for conquest) then we should be running either vassalage or theocracy.
I'd be thinking about razing remaining spanish cities; they're nothing special but would add to our running costs (tho I haven't checked situation re wonders).

Edit:thoughts on national wonders.
Wall Street in Ulundi (buddhist shrine)
Oxford in Carthage, though long term KwaDzuku has potential as superscience city.
If we keep Spanish cities then FP in Madrid.

Also I'm wondering if we ain't better off with space. Zulu and Spanish jungle cities would in the medium term convert to either cottages or workshops. We're friendly with everyone except Nap who is vassalised to Sally.

I'd take most of Izzy's cities intact if they've got good food. She seems to have put down enough cottages to balance upkeep.

No need to go with warmonger civics while we only dealing with her. Use BUR for max tech lead then later we can implement war civics for the long home stretch (if that's how it pans out).

I'm OOP until Sunday 28 Jan. Trip is weather dependent, so I'll post if I'm back sooner.

Was hoping to squueze in my turns this morning, so now GreyFox is on deck.

PS: if it comes to a vote on victory type in the next few days, put me down for :hammer: :spank:

Running a bit late coz caught up in SGOTM. I'll see what I can do.
