T57 2575BC - Thessalonica founded; I switch Constantinople to a Workboat because: the extra clams could be helpful AND we don't need the extra worker until IW comes in

And of course, the save:
http://forums.civfanatics.com/uploads/96336/LK136_BC-2250.CivBeyondSwordSave

- IW due in 14
- Worker should be finished in 9, which is premature
- Our current worker is mining the grassland hill since I wanted to save the forests for settlers
- Thessalonica's monument is doing well with the help of the chopped forest

Got it.

Will likely take the full 48 hours to play this one. Weekends are busy for me, but should have the report up Sunday evening.

That leaves time for some talk on the next city location. I was thinking of claiming the copper site but a better spot may be avail with the knowledge of iron and its whereabouts.

New Updates
I don't see anything to discuss at the moment.
For now it is get another warrior for escort, finish iron working, and another settler. Once we know the iron situation, we can discuss city locations again. City #3 *must* get us metal IMHO.

I just found this write-up for GOTM 22

http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=243174&page=2#23

Even though this is for vanilla raging barbs/always war, the strategy seems so effective that it might be worthwhile to consider for every game. I'm not suggesting that we attack everyone, but maybe a pre-emptive strike against 1 or 2 right now, might soften them up for conquest later, especially if we know if we have iron or not.

Inherited Turn: Swap Constaninople from worker to work boat - I will chop this out and press the commerce a little harder to help speed up the tech front. Other than that, A-Okay.

Turn 71: Stonehenge is built somewhere.

Turn 74: First barbarian archer sightings and our exploring warrior will likely meet his demise as he walked next to one.

Turn 75: Probably a good idea to buy a lotto ticket today as the warrior wins vs. the archer. Another barbarian warrior spotted in the fascinity.

Turn 76: Constaninople to size four and worker moved to chop the silk for the next work boat.

Turn 78: Well, the chances are better than they were last time but still not in our favor as our warrior runs into yet another barbarian archer.

Turn 79: Two for two? Impressive but unfortunately my entire turn set has netted roughtly 3 tiles he's been able to move and explore. :p

Turn 81: Monument complete in Thessalonica and a worker is queued up. The increased amount of barbarian activity is rather disturing as we seriously need some better qualified units. Iron is due next turn and the chopped forest will build last workboat and the overflow should get us an additional warrior.

Turn 82: As expected (at least by me) we have no iron quickly accessable. The closest we can see is:
http://forums.civfanatics.com/uploads/32337/LK_136_1.JPG

As much as I hate archery this early in the game, it will be a valuable tech for our given situation.

Turn 84: The warrior is built from overflow and another is queued up, I certainly do not advise sending a settler out into the jungle without at least two warriors or an archer.

Well we got iron working in this turn set and we discovered that our next city will likely be an aggressive one towards Lincoln. After the warrior is finished in Constaninople, I would whip out the settler and send him on his way to cover the iron. I think the most logical site is one nw of it as that will also gain rice. We do need workers, but when all they can do is is chop jungle, the value of them decreases dramatically. Getting agriculture and pottery should be high on the priority list and as Lee advocates "More military!" especially with all these barbs threatening us.

We could also settle the copper city next instead of getting the iron but it seems like the Incans are expanding towards Montezuma (I actually didn't notice the Incans were there until I saw them put down a city - colors are a real pain for me and I thought the Incans were actually Montezuma) which may buy us enough time to lay some fairly potent cities down there as well.

This is also a game where I would likely not even research alphabet but probably put a couple turns into it and then trade a tech for it. Likely Aesthetics as every tech that is of valuable to us is leading towards that way.

Also, did we meet Ragnar by boat? If not, we have a really big landmass which is another shame for Big and Small map type. I love lots of islands and possible water invasions.

I use photobucket.com and copy the IMG link into my posts. Works great.

I will be gone for most of the night and a good chunk of Sunday (managed to squeeze the game in just after work to not prolong it too long).

I would advise not whipping the settler but instead whip a couple archers out after the settler is built; this should help remove some of the barbarian worries. I also think doing up writing after agriculture will be the most beneficial move. The bulk of our science points will be through libraries and scientists this early rather than through cottages. Even when we start to get cottages in cities that can afford to have them (via happy cap), we will likely be close to calendar resources.

I think we should aim going agriculture -> writing -> 2turn alphabet -> aesthetics and then work on the philosophy line. Of course, this is subject to change if we plan military action but without having metal or horses, I see military action occouring later rather than earlier.

As we start to develop solidified borders, let's make a scout and work in an OB to start to reveal the more valuable military aspects of the map that some civs hold. Scouts seem like a waste, but it's the only two movement unit we have avail and I think we should aim to change that baring in mind that Byzantine have a powerful knight unit and a unique building that is improved nearly 100% with horses.

New Updates
I will see if we can grab the iron by Lincoln. I hope to get a warrior up there to scout things around before sending the settler. My gut feeling says Lincoln may grab it before we can get there. If that is the case, we need ASAP to head toward copper.

No. We met him via land.

1875 BC
I'm not sure why we bothered with three workboats this early. It is almost impossible to use 3 clams at size 5 without growing into misery.

1825 BC
(IT) Our luck is bad as an injured barb kills our warrior.

1800 BC
Our fallen comrade is avenged.

1650 BC
With this location I suspect war with Lincoln is just a matter of time, but we now have iron.

(IT) We meet Saladin.

1600 BC
(IT) More jungle grows by Thessalonica.

=======================

New Updates
We have a third city. Our military is approved with 2 archers, and a third in 1 turn. We have a second worker by Thessalonica heading toward the cattle. We still need to get a worker heading toward our iron city.

Got it.

I am currently at work, so I am unable to look at the save.

Do we know Sailing?

If not, I believe we should go that route to get the Iron online faster.

I think the amount of time invested into getting sailing is higher than actually building roads to connect the city, but we still need sailing as the pre-req for calendar anyways. I think writing should be researched fairly soon so we can use the scientists to boost the research.

Played my turns.

I noticed in the IHT that there are 649 turns left.
I played 14 turns to bring us back to the schedule.

Turn1:
Archer done in Constantinople, start another worker.
The worker near Thessalonica starts a pasture on the cows.

Turn 2:
Our exploring scout discover that Ragnar is guarding his cities with axemen. He has got metal, in other words.

Turn 3:
Agriculture is discovered, I set research on writing.

Turn 6:
Huyana Capac asks for open borders. I accept.

Turn 7:
Judaism founded in a distant land.

Turn 8:
Saladin converts to Judaism. Three religions founded by three different founders.
We have the foundation for some future, religion induced wars.

Turn 11:
A barbarian archer approaches Constantinople.
I move our archer out of the city onto a forrested tile.

Turn 12:
The barb archer moves up next to our archer.

Turn 13:
Our archer wins the joust with 0,6 health left... I move him back into Constantinople.
The cows are pasturized and roaded. The green face at Thessalonica disappears.
Lincoln moves a Settler/archer pair northwards. I assume he intends to settle the peninsula east of Constantinople. The area is getting crowded...

Turn 14:
Archer ready in Constantinople. I switch to a granary. I also MM Constantinople to max growth to hit happy cap in 4 turns.
A worker has started chopping the djungle on a hill next to Thessalonica.
Another worker is putting a farm on the corn.
The other two workers are building the iron mine (will be ready next turn).

I am not sure I played to my best this round.
I forgot to whip the monument in our iron town.
I also decided to build the road to iron town before making the actual mine. Not sure if this was the best way around.
I also noticed that a cottage was being built near Constantinople. I put one citizen on that cottage to turn it into a hamlet asap. It may have been better to work a fish tile instead to reach happy cap sooner.

We are currently at break even with 60% science. We could, in other words, settle another city. However, I think that our next city will be an ex-American city..

New Updates
I wonder if the granary in Constantinople is premature. With us having too much food already with 3 clams I fear a granary will cause the city to grow faster then whip anger will wear off.

I agree with Speedster that not whipping the monument was a mistake. The best food is the fish tile, and I would have liked to get on-line sooner.

We need more military before the next city, but we should start thinking about it. We have something with 2 of the following: pigs, rice and fish. We also have ivory, copper, stone and rice. I would like ivory city to be number 4. After that we can start talking early aggression vs. Lincoln. IMHO the ICSR site is to strong to ignore, and it may not last much longer.

Constan won't need a granary until 8+ pop. It can whip units now without a granary and still grow relatively fine when needed.

Claiming the ivory city involve getting the rice too? There is a nice spot that gets rice and cows, but it will be less shield productive as opposed to just cows and all the hills (if I recall correctly).

As for the war with Lincoln, do we have much to gain from it? I'd be happy with just more military units in that city to thwart any idea he may have of declaring on us and focus on claiming more valuable land to the west.

This is the exact location I am thinking of. The blue line is post CS irrigation.

I like that Lee/playshogi's spot best because it will give us access to that... ocean-river and perhaps eventually horses.

T115 1125BC - I cancel the Granary and start building military

T118 1050BC - Writing in, I begin Sailing in anticipation of the ICSR city and Adrianople; I accept OB with Joao; I MM Constantinople which is now at max happy

T120 1000BC - I accept OB with Sally; Ragnar converts to Judaism

T122 950BC - Joao demands Clams --> I ACCEPT <-- CANCEL IN 10!

T124 900BC - GP BIADL; Mahabodhi built; Joao converts to Hinduism

T126 850BC - I accept OB with Monty

T130 750BC - I whip a settler in Constantinople

Notes: DON'T FORGET TO CANCEL THE CLAMS DEAL IN 2 TURNS!
A workboat is waiting for Adrianople's border pop in 2 turns.
The settler should head over to the ICSR city, an archer is already in place.
Sailing due in 3, we should go Masonry next
