LK147 - world map, China

Yes we did lose the one ship near Australia. A mistake on my part, I didn't read your post well enough the first time through and tried to go across (getting contact) rather than around.

We do have one on the west coast of Canada, one looking for the northwest passage in the north of America and one not too far from Australia if we want to explore further. There may also be one that was planned to go north around asia.

BTW, where is Songhai that at least 2 civs is warring with? I have forgotten where they are located, but they may be the best chance of trade if we can meet them. They may be small.

they are in northern africa. historically, that is.
t_x

Northwest Africa is the location of the Songhai.

Great start to the war! I'll try to keep us afloat.

I may be able to look things over today, but I don't expect to start playing until tomorrow.

Great job :goodjob: I knew you'd do a good job starting the war. The rng didn't hurt at all either. It could still go wrong, of course, if Mongolia is somehow able to buy some friends, but realistically, with what we had to trade (2 silks, potentially another silk or fur if we were super desperate), it was well worth the risk.

Lee, if CKS is able to play and post tomorrow, I can play Friday morning before I leave for Chicago if you're ok with swapping. Let me know.

I am OK with swapping. I am back to work after Sandy (lost two days as a independent), so I can't play Friday morning.

Alright, I'll check later tonite and if not, early in the morning then.

Turn 0 (350 BC)
Things look good.
IBT: Mongols move a lot of units, but not advancing, one horse retreats from our unscratched warrior (near India).
Beijing sword to sword, Nanking cat to sword, Tsingtao spear to worker.

Turn 1:
Cats go 3/3 vs horse near Canton, our 3/4 horse kills it. Sword redlines but promotes killing sword near Beijing. Warrior kills redlined horse.
IBT: Booted by Russians. Mongols appear to chase warrior near India.
Shanghai sword to sword, Canton cat to cat, Tatung spear to curragh.

Turn 2:
Cats go 2/2 vs spear, sword goes 2/4 killing spear, then promotes. Army moves toward Mandalgovi - I don't want to leave it near us, especially with all the units around it right now.
IBT: Lots of units advance. Beijing sword to sword.

Turn 3:
Sword army goes 3/12 killing spear at Mandalgovi, promotes. Esword dies, promotes horse to 5/5. Vsword kills horse, promotes. E* horse kills horse.
IBT: 2 horses redline vs vet sword. 3 horses die attacking army. Silks connected.

Turn 4:
Army retreats to Nanking to heal. Cats hit spear twice, sword kills warrior, horse kills spear and promotes. Meet Iroquois.
IBT: Mongols advance. Horse retreats from spear.

Turn 5:
3 swords and an archer kill 2 archers and 2 warriors near Beijing. Horse kills horse, sword redlines but kills archer near Nanking. Two swords retreat horses, Ehorse dies to 2/4 horse, E*horse kills archer near Shanghai.
IBT: An archer dies, but a horse and an archer kill 2 spears.

Turn 6:
Sword kills warrior near Beijing. Esword dies to 3/4 archer; army moves to defend and kills archer.
IBT: Mongols move around.

turn 7:
Swords retreat 2 horses near Beijing. Army kills warrior and archer. Sword and horse kill spears.
IBT: Horse kills spear. Mongols move around.

Turn 8:
E*horse kills horse. Esword kills warrior.
IBT: Mongols move strangely.

Turn 9:
Army moves on Darhan, kills spear.
IBT: Darhan empties out!?! Lose a worker because I can't see that a tile is roaded.

Turn 10:
Army kills 2 spears at Darhan, razes city.

The Mongols won't give techs, but they'll give a bunch of little towns (I found 4, but there may be more; I didn't try them all) if we want to make peace. If we want to make peace now, there is a horse that should recapture the worker near Mandalgovi first.

I'm going to attempt to get enough time to play before I leave. I've tentatively got it. If I cant get a turn in, I'll let you know. Having taken a look at the situation, I'm not inclined to take peace until the Mongols will offer up Currency or Construction unless convinced otherwise. Any suggestions appreciated as always.

I've got the turn half played. Things are going pretty well... but I'm tired and I'm going to bed. Any suggestions for what I should do with this guy?

No wonders in play. I could either rush the HE or make an Army.

Army!

Two armies should let us start to move forward.

Unless we are deep trouble, I vote to keep fighting. At the moment, IIRC, we don't have anything to build but troops.

Well, the Internet was down this morning when I started, so I screwed up and built HE, Then I bilt another Army with my second leader :D

Inherrited Turn - Mostly looks good, although I donn't like spending 7gpt on min science, so I look for somewhere convenient to run a scientist... but there isn't anywhere. I finally settle on tsingtao for the short term, though I don't like it. It doesn't delay the settler, but it does stop growth... We'll look for a better spot turn by turn.

I'd like to Raze/Replace Ta-Tu. and replace the city we recently razed, at which point I think we can make peace with Mongolia for Tech if we want.

IT - Germany evicts us.
Russia and Babs ally vs Songhai
Mongolia moves lots of horsies menacingly.

Beijing: Sword -> Spear
Shanghai: Settler -> Spear
Iron Now: (Makes me want to rename our Horses city Equinopolis) Worker -> Sword

1) 130BC - Our Warrior down by Dacca has run out of places to hide... And a silly wounded archer has moved next to him on the flat ground sooooo... Attack! He wins 3/2 and promotes to Vet. (course, he'll die in a minute, but hey...) No other attacks.

IT - We lose the above mentioned warrior to a horse. We also lose a scouting warrior who was evicted by the Greeks to a Mongol horse, and a sword escorting our settler to a Mongolian sword (the settler is ok, he had a spear with him too). We do kill two swords and retreat 3 horses... nice luck there for Mongolia

Chengdu: Cat -> Cat

2) 110BC - Kill 2 Spears, 3 Horsemen, 2 Swords, and 3 Archers. No losses. Mongols will now give us Wriring for 60 gold with Peace. Not good enough...

IT - We lose a wounded Sword

Beiging: Spear -> Sword
Canton: Sword -> Sword
Nanking: Sword -> Sword
Tsingtao: Settler -> Spear
Hangchow: Horse -> Horse

3) 90BC - New Darhan Founded in a spot to avoid overlap in the fat cross with opponents.

Kill a Mongol Spear escorting a Settler, Kill 2 Horses menacing Nanking. Bomb down a stray archer near Shanghai to 1HP, and the fish are biting...

Picture 1 - Leader #1

After some thought, I decide it's best to rush HE, and since there are no shields in the box in the capital, and the leader can get there now, I rush it there. I then clean up some Mongol units and THIS happens...

Picture 2 - Leader #2!!!

IT - Cleo shows up offering this trade.

Picture 3 - Wines for Silks

I decline. I can't remember if a lux for lux deal break ruins our rep or not, but I'm thinking it does, so no.

We lose a sword to a counter attack :(

And of course, this happens

Picture 4 - HE Complete

Beijing: HE -> Sword.
Shanghai Cat -> Spear

4) 70BC - Kill about half a dozzen units. Mostly ha defensive turn, as the Mongol's have a large force of horses headed to Shanghai, and a large stack of spears and archers near Nanking. No worries, we'll slaughter them.

IT -

Xinjan: Settler -> Spear
Tientsin: Catapult -> Spear

5) 50BC - Mongolia now have a carpet of units all over our lands. It looks like they are trying to walk all the way accross to attack Iron Now. While stupid, it's annoying enough that it's making me fight defensively to kill all the units. Hopefully their supply runs a bit low soon. Mongols will give Writing or Poly for Peace, but I want Currency or Construction, and I want Ta-Tu gone.

IT - Irros attack... an American Galley. So they are at war!
India Demands 23g. I cave.
Babs bring Germany in against Songhai.
Babs complete Hanging Gardins

Canton: Sword -> Sword
Nanking:Spear -> Sword

6) 30BC - Housecleaning. I didn't keep good track, sorry, but going from memory, I killed roughlt 20 units between this turn and the last. Maybe as many as 25. I even used warriors to finish off wounded horses :lol: I think I might have lost 1 unit in the process.

IT - Beijing Sword -> Sword
Iron now Walls => Rax

7) 10BC - Kill a couple of Swords, but mostly I just pulled units into cities, or back accross the boarder to healThey are finally running out of troop waves, and are now "close" to a deal for Currency.

I know it's only 7 turns, but
A) I HAVE to go now and

B) It feels like the time to hand off anyhow. It's a nice round end of the BC time, and it's the end of the defensive war time (I think), so once we heal up, we can march forward, and also, with them being close to a deal for Currency, a decision must be made, and should be discussed.

Australia lacks Currency
Greece lacks Currency and Construction
Irros lack Poly and Currency.

If we can get Currency for peace, do we do it since we have the opportunity to barter it? I'll let you all work that out. I'll get the Pictures up later, but I have to go now.

In the queue

I think we should take towns before peace. After we take enough towns they will likely give all their techs for peace and we gain a bunch of cities.

I believe one advantage of armies is that they heal in enemy territory if you rest a turn. No need to leave. Its one of the reasons they are strong.

Great war, people :goodjob:

LK, I would join this group, but besides weekends, I got little time to play at the moment.

Point 1, I don't disagree with, but there is something to be said for taking Currency and picking up at least Writing and Poly in trade. We could really use Writing. We could use the 20 turns to build markets and more swords, then attack when we're consolidated.

Not saying we SHOULD do that There are arguments on both sides. If it were totally my call, I would not give them peace till Ta-Tu was razed/replaced, then I'd revisit the situation.

Regarding Armies healing in enemy territory.. I'm sure I knew that once, but I totally have no memory of that :( The things you forget over 8 years... Regardless, I still would have recalled the one army under the spears as it was down to 4HP (A Mongol sword went RNG crazy on it), and the other Army was already in our lands killing the 2 spear/archer stacks. We had some sword/spear groups just across the boarder killing horses though, and those did need recalled.

BTW: the Mongols are in Republic iirc, so the War Weariness must be getting pretty bad for them, Something else to consider.

Pretty sure their offensive units are now gassed, so Lee should be able to take some stuff in the 2nd half of the turn.

I just realized that today is my 10th Anniversary at CFC. I registered on this date, to play this game: This Game Iactually Registered Maniac Marshall that day, just before leaving for Atlanta, but when I came back a week later... I could never get the pass to work, and the recovery wouldn't email it to me. (I still get yearly emails for that nick on my birthday :lol: ), so I registered this one like a week later.

So, [party] , and thanks to Lee for giving me a reason to be here the celebrate the anniversary by playing a game of Civ 3, just like the old days.

[10 BC]
I don't understand why we chopped the silks. Both of those tiles now have no shields. Tientsin is so slow to build I swap to temple. Our long-term goal is domination, so it can't hurt to build this.

We have some cities at nice points such as Beijing at 15 SPT.

Persia is close enough that I send silks, $54, and $11/turn to gain writing. WE gain nothing to build, but several more techs become visible.

Kill a stray Mongol unit (1-0).

[10 AD]
Kill a stray Mongol sword (2-0).
(IT) Our sword goes elite, and then dies to a sword. (3-1)

[30 AD]
Kill a stray archer. (4-1)

[50 AD]
Kill a stray spear. (5-1)
Kill a spear assaulting Mandalgovi). (6-1)
I disband 2 exploring warriors hopeless trapped by Greece. We can't afford to pay for junk units giving us no new map knowledge.

I trade our other spare silk to Greece for $30 and a worker. It may be under used, but I love free workers. Plus I would prefer to keep them in being traded somehow, over a demand from the Americas. The risk of broken trade route to America is a lot higher.
(IT) We lost a healthy spear on a hill. (6-2)

[70 AD]
Scratch a Mongol sword (7-2).
Kill a spear assaulting Mandalgovi). The army is beat up enough I need to pull back to heal. (8-2)

Another warrior is hopeless trapped near Greece, and disbanded.

I can tell Persia is heading toward the open land south of Xinjan. That city swaps to settler and emergency whips. I also temp block with our warrior to but us time. I don't want any AI in that spot.
(IT) Our elite spear drops to 1 HP, but kills a sword (9-2).

[90 AD]
Scratch a sword. (10-2).
I promoted a horse to elite killing a horse. I am starting to recall the combat difference in civ3. 2 speed units much better to kill stray 1 point units (11-2).
(IT) We kill an attacking archer (12-2).

[110 AD]
We have a new contact - Venezuela. The bad news is they aren't backwards this time. :(
It is a Mongolian slaughter with them losing 3 swords, 2 archers, and us promoting 2 swords to elite. (17-2)
They still won't give up enough in peace. Construction would be the best tech as some possible trades, but that is just close.

[130 AD]
It is about time!

When it rains, it pours.

We have a new special building.

3 spears and two swords are dead. (22-2)

(IT) I give Germany $22. This is demand torture turn. I also give Australia $21.
Bad between turn - killed a sword, then lost a spear guarding a catapult. Archer stole a worker (23-3).

[150 AD]
I capture my primary target for the round. No more Mongolian cities behind our lines. We get a nice haul of workers.

Scratch 3 spears, 1 horse, and 1 sword. I recovered our catapult. (28-3)

Mongol has shifted focus toward Beijing / Canton area.
(IT) We lost a horse (28-4).

[170 AD]
The corner filler city is complete. That is another AI settler pair near Canton heading to that spot.

LOL - it is going crazy.

We lost a sword killing 1 spear, 1 archer, 4 swords (34-4).
(IT) We lost a spear, but killed a sword (35-5)
We can build the FP, but in my opinion is way too early on this map. We want the FP near Europe, or Africa.

[190 AD]
4 swords and a spear are killed. (40-5)
(IT) All is quite.

[210 AD]
The leader rushes a temple in Mandalgovi. This may not be the most popular choice, but I want to get our 21 tiles under control. Plus the best tile is the plains cattle out of range. Plus it will finish despite the resistor.
We killed 3 spears at the loss of a sword (43-6).
Summary:
This is a good point to hand over. The battle versus Mongolia has gotten ugly as they now have pikes and MI.

We can get currency and map making. This will let us get to Japan, and get some markets built. The alternative is once last hard push to raze and replace TaTu. Another source of horses can't hurt.
I already fear I waited too long, as there were some tech trading possibilities with the right techs from Mongolia earlier.

ROSTER:
Around ten turns is fine. If key points are a turn or two before / after, feel free to adjust that count.

LKendter (just played)
