LK50 - Slow cooked deity, civ open to debate.

It works fine on my PC.

Maybe try downloading again in case something got corrupted.

Ugh again. Redownloaded, and it still crashes. The 2550 BC save from Lee's turn DOES load for me.

This is my crappy computer, with the ancient CD-ROM drive that had trouble reading the PTW disc so I had to manually copy over a few files to get it to install. Ugh, I'm not in the mood to futz with that right now; I'll try more tomorrow and report back then.

I'll be back at my good computer on Monday, if all else fails....

This would be far beyond the 48 hour turn around goal.

If it doesn't look like you can fix this tonight, please skip. Tonight already hits 48 hours for you.

Well, I never would've figured this out if I hadn't been setting up the RBP11 games...

Apparently Civ crashes instantly on this PC if music is enabled. I'm sure it's due to the ancient not-quite-compatible sound card that's in there. Lee's save loaded for me because music was disabled in that savegame. I've played plenty of SGs on this PC before, and apparently this is the first time anyone passed me one with music enabled. :confused:

Anyway, I disabled the sound card in Windows and it loads fine. WIll play shortly and report back.

As for the game - I'd say to get Reykjavik out of there. It's going to take forever to build a temple, and even after that - even if it gets the temple done before Munich which is probably unlikely - it'll have six squares of cultural infringement. We can do it by letting the city grow to size 2 and building a settler. It might flip before then; if it does, oh well.

Hum, that means I play with music turned on...? Err... yes. :o Should get another habit. :o I'm ashamed. :o But what, the Civ music just rocks !!! :D

I'm so sorry for Reykjavik. I won't do that kind of move anymore. See, I've learnt something already (well, I'd like to know what is gonna happen, still). Will get another good habit : no risky city. :) I'm already happy to play in this SG ; don't worry, we're gonna make it. Hmm, which of these 2 habits should I get tonight ? I don't want to learn too fast...

P.S. : I wasn't really making fun of someone/something here. Just wanted to speak a little.

Heh, it's not your fault that my PC couldn't load the save... ;)

ANYWAY, let's get back on track here :) As I said, I think we should get Reykjavik out of there; the city swaps to a settler. It'll take 18 turns to grow to size 2, then 5 or 10 more to finish the settler after that, but I think that's the best thing to do with this city.

Interited turn: Trondheim changed from grassland to forest, growth still in 2 turns with more shields.

Early: Trondheim built settler, started warrior for a second MP unit. Northern scout pushed past Egypt and western scout pushed past Carthage. Conscript warrior continues the long walk home. Oslo founded at the cow.

Middle: Stockholm founded among the bonus grassland west of Trondheim. Frankfurt's got two tiles of infringement on it, but it should be pretty safe from flipping given how close it is to our capital. Northern scout finds that there's nothing beyond Egypt.

Late: Trondheim puts out another settler. Germany has Writing and contact with the Celts but lacks contact with the Ottomans. Since Germany already has contact with Egypt (on the far side of Otto), he'll find the Ottomans soon enough anyway, so we swap contacts. Brennus has Mysticism, as does everybody else. Alphabet to Egypt gets ourselves Mysticism.

The world is at tech parity except for Germany's monopoly on Writing.

Here's how I'd dotmap this.

Red dot is IMMEDIATE priority and should be where the current settler goes. Pray we can beat Germany to there. :worship: It gets two flood-plains and the wines. Tentatively, I think this city should also be slated for the Forbidden Palace.

Blue dots are decent locations when we can get there; the one closest to Copenhagen should probably come first.

White dot should be settled LAST, since it's just plugging a gap in already-claimed land. It makes for some cramping, but it does recover five unused land tiles plus three water.

Yellow dot is, I think, the best way to get a productive city down in that tundra. It's off the river, but it meshes well with Trondheim and recovers two grasslands that can't be gotten by building on the river. Also, it leaves room for two purple dot fishing villages (one will suffice if we discover whales or fish offshore there.)

==========

Highly Detailed Wrath (tm): Copenhagen needs some serious MM. Six turns from now (1600 BC), it should be switched from the forest back to the grassland, so that it completes the granary just before growing. The granary will still complete in 8 turns, the city will grow on the turn after that, and then there's a forest chop coming in to get a boost towards a settler.

I started Oslo on a granary; it needs labor from the workers that are at Stockholm now; make sure it gets that. Irrigate the "I" tile as soon as the workers can get there, to keep Oslo supplied with two-food tiles so as not to stunt its growth.

As for Germany, I think attacking him now is suicide. He's the game leader at this point; if he buys in a dogpile we're in serious trouble. Also, remember that Germany is the only civ that gets both spearmen and archers as free starting units; he'll have a ton of those floating around that would shred our own small band of archers. I say bide our time and build up.

Got It! Will get drunk tonight :beer:
Will play and post tomorrow, waiting to see if anyone else has any comments.

Frankfurt's got two tiles of infringement on it, but it should be pretty safe from flipping given how close it is to our capital.

Frankfurt safe because it's close to OUR capitol? Stop trying to confuse me ;)

RED DOT and Highly Detailed Wrath (tm) are noted!

I don't got it!

T-Hawk, I downloaded the zip file yesterday, but didn't check inside. It's only the pic of 1750, not the save. I checked the uploads folder, and you uploaded the pic, and the same pic is in the zip file, but no save. I can't find any save for 1750. Of course, it's a random mess in there, so I might have missed it...but it's not in the zip file.

See, I knew you're were trying to confuse me! I actually do "got it" this time, will play right now and post soon. Man I hate the Germans, I really hope they don't sneak attack me like they always do in my SP games.

IBT - I see we are researching writing, but Germs already have it...and we've got 18 turns to go. Switch to Poly at min sci...I figure we don't need Monarchy, so even if someone beats us to it, we can wait it out and buy the other, more useful techs. Everything else looks good, hit Enter. Cleo tells me our troops are stealing chickens, I promise her I will make them stop.

1725 - Western scout spots island 1 tile from the mainland up by Carthage. It's got Iron...but so far away.

Trondheim as is will grow in 4 and settler in four, but working the forest for 2 turns, and the grass for one will let me grow one turn faster.

1700 - Celts get monopoly on HB. They want 10gpt and 330g. No thanks!

IBT - Otto demands 35g. Ummm...ok, here ya go buddy. At least he's not annoyed anymore.

1675 - ARGH! The Germs founded Nuremburg one spot NE of the wines. Hmmm...what to do... I think long and hard about this one. I really don't want to piss off the Germs too much at this point. Part of that spots allure was the wines. I choose to settle on the hill directly South of our Red Dot, although I'm still 2 turns from doing so. It doesn't create too much conflict with Nuremburg, will still get both FP's, and it's on a hill on a river. It does have a lot of overlap with Oslo, but I'm thinking with the science rate being twice as slow, it will be a long time to hospitals, so overlap shouldn't hurt us much. I also don't want to waste all this land that's really the only decent terrain fairly close to our capitol. In combination with the white dot, all the tiles near our capitol can be put to good use.

Celts now have writing also...and contact with the Arabs. Germs also have gotten contact with Arabs, and HB. I'd like to buy contact, so I could sell it...but writing is pricey right now. The Arabs are probably backwards, so I could sell them techs. But they are probably broke from buying off Celts and Germs. I decide to wait and see.

1650 -
Bergen Spear > Spear
Oslo Worker > Barracks Feel free to change to your liking!

Trondheim grows, move citizens around, settler in 1.

MM Copenhagen to grow in four. Granary due in 5, but will complete when citizen is added to forest.

Tech situation still the same.

1625 -
Trondheim Settler > Settler Will need to MM to get in 5.

The Germs complete the Colossus!

Western Scout blocked in by the dumb AI, can't move him yet.

No change in techs.

Lux down to 10%

IBT -
THE GERMS COMPLET THE PYRAMIDS!!! This could suck...

Otto cascades to Oracle.

1600 -
Birka founded on the hill south of red dot =(

Poly due in...34.

1575 -

Western scout spots an opening in the line, and makes a break towards freedom!

Otto and Egypt now have HBR.
336g to Celts for Writing
Writing and Contact with Carthage to Egypt for HBR and 100g. Cleo's broke now.
HBR, Contact with Otto, and 5g to Carthage for Contact with Arabs and a Slave
Alphabet to Arabs for 42g

So, for 199g we got Writing, HBR, tech parity, all known contacts, and a slave ^^

IBT -
Carthage tells me I'm a drunk child, and tells me to get out of his turf.

1550 -
Copenhagen does NOT complete it's granary, it's 1 shield short that was lost to corruption ><
Trondheim citizen moved to forest for the next two turns...growth + settler in 2.

1525 -
Frankfurt produced a settler spear combo!!! Looks like they might be headed towards the tundra, they just stepped out of the city. Might have to send the next settler south to get at least one of the tundra spots.

Buy a slave from Egypt for 45g and Contact with Arabs.

The people in Copenhagen are NOT happy campers. Lux raised to 30% temp, making 11gpt with Poly due in...31

1500 -

Trondheim's borders expand. German settler/spear headed SE towards tundra. Our Settler completes in Trondheim. I fortify his spearman accompaniment in Trondheim, and send one of the warriors with the settler instead to the SE part of the tundra. Damn AI probably sees oil down there!

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

There are still two scouts on the loose. The one in the NE on the mountain, I would probably disband. The one in the NW can probably sneak through Carthage borders and only get asked to leave once. He can explore to the N of the Germs, that's probably where the Arabs are.

I did not build any embassies, but we might want to do so in the near future, depending on the tech situation and our cash flow. Lux can be dropped when Copenhagen pops it's settler to save us some cash.

Trondheim needs MM a lot. You can't MM the others much, until we improve some more tiles. You might want to change Stockholm to a temple, or whatever else you feel like. Birka isn't going to do a damn thing till we can get a worker up there, so I switched it to one...feel free to veto.

There are two settler pairs. The northern one is headed for the square SE of the mountain in front of him. The southern pair is headed one square SE onto the forested tundra...due to the German settler/spear headed that direction.

There are TWO slaves now...make sure you know what type of worker you're using for what job!

taking out the germans maybe was easier said then done;)

(1450bc-0) everything looks good.

(1450bc-2) Aarhus founded->rax. I block off a German settler/spearman pair heading south, use mp-troops from trondheim and bergen, so we have to raise the luxury tay temporarily

ibt: FP-message shows up

(1425bc-3) Bergen: spear->worker
Stockholm: rax->archer

(1400bc-4) the Germans get MapMaking, no way we could afford this at monopoly price. I sell him our wm for his tm+20g (I he was willing to pay more, I'd hold off)
Buy a worker from the Arabs for HR+5g

(1375bc-5) Trondheim: settler->settler
Bergen: worker->archer
Copenhagen: settler->worker
found Stavanger: worker
(1300bc-8)Rejkjavick is finally abandonned
(1275bc-9) Stockholm: archer->archer
Odense founded: worker
Copenhagen: worker->settler
Oslo: grnary->worker

Lee, you could buy two workers from the arabs -I did not want to burn all of our cash, so I leave the decision to you. We are doing ok in tech (only behind the Germans who have map making) and chances are good that our 40 turns gambit on poly works out. I think that we have enough settlers now. We should concentrate on workers from the granary-cities and military from the others as long as no usefull buildings are available (markets/courthouses).

I still think we could wage a limited war against the germans: this will be hard, but without war we will have a much more difficult position: we only have wines and no other ressources.

Quick question...

I've never played with the Vikings, does their UU uprgrade directly from archers? If so, we might want to stop building warriors and spearmen, as we have no iron to upgrade anyway, and build archers instead.

E-mail updates stopped working for me a long time ago.

The formum clock stupidity did make me take longer to realize this was hear.

Of course, if the site didn't decide to go unreachable last night I would of posted earlier. Great server upgrade. :rolleyes:

====================

1250 BC (pre-turn) -
I cancel the settler in Copenhagen, and switch to Barracks. Egypt will beat us to the site near Stavanger. I will build some standby settlers for the death of Germany, but that is it. There is absolutely no question we will have to go Berserk on Germany.

1225 BC - :wallbash: Germany just got Polytheism. :wallbash:
Well, scratch to the 40-turn gambit. This isn't feeling like deity +50% science so far.
I didn't want to cripple Arabia last turn, but I think Egypt can survive with one less worker for $120.
We are down $116 and $2/turn, but we have map making, and a pretty good world map. In addition, we can now start selling the map every round.

1175 BC - Well it is an overcrowded spot, but Hareld is formed. I could see the AI building a city in this spot. Interestingly, a Germany settler turned around after I build the city.

1125 BC - For $55, I buy contact with Greece. They are backwards, so I ship them horseback riding for wm and $56. I pick up some extra pocket change for the Greek map.

1075 BC - The forest chop times is horrible, so I switch Copenhagen to galley. A couple of exploring galleys is a good think. Plus - think early marines.

Summary:
It will be awhile, but I think we will need Germany to trip our GA.

pre-turn : I go with the figures, as they were saying in SimCity...

1- 975bc : zzz, I find that the dotmap is not ideal...

2- 950bc : Bergen : galley > archer.
Stockholm : archer > archer.

3- 925bc : Trondheim : spearman > spearman.

4- 900bc : Oslo : worker > barracks.

5- 875bc : archer > archer.
Stavanger : barracks > spearman.

6- 850bc : Trondheim : spearman > spearman.
Bergen : archer > archer.
Stockholm : archer > archer.
Birka : barracks > archer.

7- 825bc : Copenhagen : barracks > spearman.

8- 800bc : zzz

9- 775bc : Odense : barracks > archer.
Trondheim : spearman > spearman.
Stockholm : archer > archer.

10- 750bc : Oslo : barracks > archer.
Bergen : archer > archer.
Aarhus : archer > archer.
Alexander : take WM + 54 gold (all), give Map Making.
Brennus still lacks Polytheism (due in 1 turn for us).
Exploring a bit with galleys will enable us to sell WM, but I'm not sure of this strategy (losing time building these ships).
Our forces now : 10 warriors, 11 archers, 9 spearmen, for 10 cities.

So : just built up our military, mainly archers, so as to capture both German cities, then with all these archers roaming, we will upgrade them to berserkers...

the save : 750bc
