I think rails is the key (although the key is getting smaller and smaller). I have not seen RailRoads in Songhai lands, so they appear to lack coal. We hopefully do have coal.
If we can hold out till Communism and Steam (and have multiple sources of coal) we'll be rolling again...

That is most likely why they are massed at our border. I would suggest an alliance with them against the Babs. It might be expensive, but we have a choke point to keep the Babs out of our lands.
 
950 AD (0): With lots of Sogahi units at our boarders we need something to happen. I am not sure about a war right now given we are laking rifles and rails. I think Babs are our best option for battle and maybe we can bring the Songahi on our side. We have 11 turn deal left with Babylon so now what. Status quo for now :(.

INBTW: Russia joins India against Australia. We lose our silks, France reup for 580 gold and 5gpt and WM. Persia and Russia sign MPP. Persia declared on Agentina.

960 AD (1): Swazi builds a bank starts a courthouse. New Hlobane a duct starts a market. No news on the diplo front. We are really just spinning our wheels. Can't afford steam and nationalism is being traded around and we can't get that either. The frustration with being able to do nothing is mounting.

970 AD (2): Nothing exciting INBT. A few buildsing completed starts a harbor on the West coast and MM for growth. Sell Mongols Magnetism for 20 gold. We can buy medicine from Austraila for an obscene price. NOt much else :wallbash:

Well I see a great opening.
1) Even if all we can do is borrow money for gpt please do it. Even a few hundred bucks would let us upgrade some impi to muskets, warriors to MDI and catapults to cannons. Don't knock the MDI. They can still kill attacking longbows and MDI most of the time. Anything that improves our military rating helps.

2) Sign Babylon and the Songhai into the war against Russia. Make sure to include a RoP with the Songhai. This is a KEY opening for us. We have a reason to get those Songhai troops away from the borders. Babylon needs to be in the war to get the Songhai an opening past the choke point.

980 AD (3): Lots of jungle clearing now that all the tiles are roaded. Demand Russia leave our boarder and she declares as expected. Rather than waiting for her to attack get it over with now. We may very well lose 2 cities on the island. Sign Babylon into the war for Ivory. Take a ROP with it. Okay send 126 gpt to India for 2010 in gold. He is the only one with cash on hand. Massive upgrades all across the land. Warrior, pikes, impi cats etc. Can't afford to bring the Songhai in at any cost.

INBT: UH-OH, not sure if this is good or bad. Songhai signed up with Russia to fight the Babs. Well India didn't want our 126gpt too much because they join Russia against us. India also declared on the Babs. New Zim is captured.

990 AD (4): We love the chief day's break out at a few towns. Russia has landed 2 knights will have to search for some local cavs to take care of them. Mongol's declare on Babs. As do the Aztecs. IMG :eek: we have only 1 cav in the southern "capital" area and a few towns only protected by a lone musket. New cavs are due next turn. I blew and should've rushed them last turn. :wallbash: Will dispatch the 2 knights next turn. Hope the damage is minimal. Give our freinds the Songhai an ROP to aide there fight vs the babs. cost WM and 40 gold.

INBT: America joind Russia vs the Babs. Mongols and russia don't feel like trading with us. Russia brings in the Aztecs against us. Tugela falls as expecte but the cavalry is litterally coming. America signs Venzuela against Babylon.

1000 AD (5): A few new cavs complete. A new baracks on the island. Upgrade the warriors there to MDI. Persia declares on us because of the MPP they had with Russia. Oh NO. NOw the Songhai declare on us because of an MPP they too had with Russia. Recapture Tugela and 419 gold. Take out 2 weakend rifles near Pi-Rammses.

YUCK! NOw we are in a dog pile with now real miliatary and tons of Red units to our West. We have gpt back from France but not sure what is a priority now Nationalism or rails. Rails are key and I have tried to bring workers back from the front lines where they were doing busy work on the jungle tiles. We can buy steam from France. Will see what looks like the best option. Sell Music Theory to Greece for 20 gold and 8 gpt. Okay buy Steam from France for 245gpt and 2100 gold. Steam to America gets us 56gpt, 30 gold dyes and WM. Steam to China for Medicine straight up. Well we have the only source of Coal on the continent. :smoke: I moved the workers before I decided to make the Steam deal. We can start railing next turn [pimp].

Either we are dead or this is the Golden Chance. We are surrounded by enemies, but his isn't neccesarily bad. If we sign a MPP with Babylon they'll help us with all our enemies, if they're getting too close. With a little luck we can take out the Songhai while Babylon defends our border.

Perhaps a bit too optimistic ...

BTW MPP + Nationalism with Babylon is now fairly cheap; we pay 32 gpt. .....

And we have a potential trade with Egypt; they have Nationalism + Sanitaion up on us, we have Steam up on them.
I'm not that pessimistic. We cansurvive this !!
 
Well this is one of the most ugly situations I have been handed in a long time.

I am very confused on the report as there was several things that should have been done that I didn't see reported.

1) Did we try to buy anything from Russia before the demand to leave? This would have helped us a lot.

2) Why did we make the steam deal and give up 2100 in gold? I am handed what sounds like a disaster, and I would have been much happier with some rushed military that Steam. Considering this way the last turn of the round I feel I should have been given that decision. It will take time to get a rail-net to be useful. Some additional units would have helped NOW.

3) On turn 4 did we try to ally with the Songhai vs. India?

4) Can't afford to bring the Songhai in at any cost.. Did you try an MPP? When Russia attacked the Songhai would have declare war on RUSSIA. If not that single mistake is going to be very costly. IMO this mistake could prove fatal

5) Steam to China for Medicine straight up. What the????????? While in the world didn't we try to include some type of alliances / MPP. Babylon can't survive a dogpile by 3 Civs. This was another big mistake We need to take the pressue away from Babylon and we blew leverage to do so.

I see it, but I can't start until later on Sunday. For some people the weekends are the best time to play. For me the weekends may be the WORST time to play. This is one of those weekends that I don't have much Civ time.

All valid points and my huge map inexperience with many many opponents is showing through. MPPs, Military alliances and embargos are not thing we normally deal with in standard and small maps with only 5-7 opponents.

It was not my intention to kill our chances at survival likewise I didn't see the MPP as an option with the Songhai. I was merely thinking about an alliance vs. Russia and an MPP would put us at war with our allies vs. Russia in the Babs.

Steam was a priorty I apologize for taking the option away from you.

Yuck sorry for messing up your game Lee. Wasn't my intention. Got a bit overwhelmed with all that was going on at once and didn't think about how to best handle the Songhai.

I didn't think about getting stuck with a Babylon war. I wonder if the Songhai would have allied vs. India or someone else. I will say this much - the war is going to spread big time!

I immediately stop the workers clearing jungle by our borders. The Songhai will be in range before there work is complete. I don't understand why they weren't already stopped.

Why in the world do we have 6 sleeping workers near New Ibabanago? I immediately put them to work. I find another 9 by New Bapedi. This is really annoying.

I take the deal pointed out by Rik Meleet. Babylon gets an MPP and $32/turn and we get Nationalism.

I ship France $45/turn to ally with us against Russia. I hope they get dragged into war with the rest of the Civs.

I decide to let Greece die and send them Banking for an alliance vs. Russia.

I send Egypt Steam Power for Sanitation and $9. We can't afford hospitals at the moment, but the option to do so is nice.

I send Sanitation to America for an alliance against the Aztecs. It can't hurt to have the new world burning up troops.

I send Sanitation to China for an alliance against India. I doubt we will even see any Indian troops. This ends the China / India trade embargo against us.

I send Medicine to the Mongols for an alliance against India.


I will let Babylon have Pi-Ramses. This city is the least of our concerns. IMO these troops should have already been moving south. The loss of Ivoria will destroy our rep. The troop forces need to get where the key cities are.
(IT) Austria and Iroquois sign a peace treaty.
Aztecs declare war on the Mongols and the Chinese.
America and Russia ally vs. Australia. Their next target is Argentina.
Our Chinese "allies" and Russia embargo us.
China and Russia ally vs. Argentina. India and America ally vs. Argentina.
Persia, then India declares war on America.
Our Mongol "allies" and Persia embargo us.

This round is lucky with only losing 1 musket. However, the number of Songhai heading our way is obscene. The Russians landed an annoying knight behind our lines.

I can tell the planet is at war, as the inter-turn took over 1/2 hour.

We need cash so badly for upgrades / rushes that I give Greece Astronomy for the dirt-cheap price of $5 and $6/turn. I pick up $24/turn from Venezuela for Nationalism. We need troop upgrades NOW so I give France $59/turn for $939.

I kill the knight behind our lines. I kill a Songhai cavalry and spot an additional 10 units I wasn't aware of and the count is 65 units.

I lost 2 cavalry to a musket in the open: We are in deep trouble and don't need the RnG to turn on us. :mad:

Things feel so desperate that I mobilize.
(IT) This is totally meaningless, but Egypt and India ally vs. Babylon.
Iroquois declare war on the Mongols.
Venezuela and India ally vs. Argentina. This one is very meaningful.
France and India ally vs. Australia. Who cares? The same pair allies vs. Argentina.
The stupid alliances continue as Babylon and France ally vs. Argentina.
The Songhai and Persia declare war on France.
Australia and the Aztecs sign peace.
Egypt and Russia embargo us. The same pair allies vs. Argentina.
China and Russia ally vs. France. The Mongols and Russia also ally vs. France.
Babylon declares war on Persia.

We LOSE MemphisZulu to the Songhai. We lost another defending musket.

Yes. To me a close game where we run a real chance of losing is more fun than a slam dunk where the only question is if we can win faster then the last win.

Utilizing every possible resource just to be able to neuter a threat makes the possible win in the end that much sweeter. It is not just another day at work.

That said, not getting Songhai on our side was perhaps not the optimal way to go. It is certainly more exciting though. I think we are such a large empire, that we are not seriously hurt unless we somehow get punctured.

If we just hold them off until we get rails, we will almost certainly be able to retake something, as we have such a superior ability to concentrate forces. We will not leave 4+ military in every city in our interior.

Our 2 ivory towns are both right at the borders. If we lose either town our rep is destroyed and things get far more difficult. I can't even picture trying to rely 100% on self-research and getting ahead of the AI curve to be able to trade techs for GPT to support enough self-research.

LK76 is a loss if no coal
LK77 came way to close to self-destruct with a couple of cities survive with just 1 hp units.

I just don't have the energy for another high-energy game...

I ship Nationalism to Argentina for wm, $18 and $26/turn.
(IT) France and India ally vs. America.
France and Venezuela ally vs. Russia.
Brazil and France ally vs. America. I won't argue with more fighting in the new world.
France declares war on the Iroquois.
Brazil and Russia embargo us. Brazil then declares war on Babylon.
The Egypt / Songhai trade embargo ends.

Australia and the Songhai sign a peace treaty.
Australia and Argentina sign a peace treaty.

I killed 1 longbow, 5 MDI, 1 swordsman and 1 cavalry. I lost 1 MDI.

OUCH - The Russians are building ToE. We are further behind in tech then I realized. :eek:
The Persians are building Universal Suffrage.

This is the "fun" coming up for next turn. That yummy stack is next to Ulundi 2.

We are forced into a war in Venezuela due to the Babylon MPP.

China and Russia ally vs. the Mongols. So much for the dog pile I started vs. India.

We lost our supply of furs. I will have to find a new luxury source. One city riots and I have to hire a few temporary specialists.

:confused: The Mongol SoD withdraws from Ulundi 2. I didn't think 3 rifles, 3 muskets, 2 pikemen, 1 cannon and a couple of junk units was that good of a defense. Our troops certainly won't argue with a chance to rest.

I kill that annoying Russian archer on Madagascar.

Since the Songhai SoD is out our range from any of our cities I decide to give all the troops a rest. To be honest we didn't have a lot of troops ready to attack.

I send Argentina Ivory for $84, $14/turn.
The Iroquois suddenly have money so I ship them Nationalism for $108, $34/turn.
I could get a little more from France, but I ship Ivory to America for $11/turn. We need to stop helping the #1 civ of France.

I appreciate any cash that lets me continue to upgrade our troops.
(IT) The Persia and Mongols trade embargo ends due to Persia declaring war on the Mongols.
The Songhai declares war on the Mongols.
Greece has a suicide wish as they ally with China against Babylon. They also form a meaningless alliance vs. Argentina.

Well this sucks - I lost my $34/turn from the Iroquois as they ally with the Russians against us.

Well the Songhai are back heading toward Ulundi 2. The only thing I can figure is when I stripped some of the other cities to help Ulundi 2 caught there attention.

I kill 1 swordsman, 2 pikemen, 3 muskets and 14 MDI. I lost 1 cavalry, 1 warrior (tried to get lucky vs. 1 hp unit) and 2 crusaders. For a 5 attack unit they have sucked. I promoted 1 cavalry.

Despite this slaughter this is another Songhai SoD visiable.

I ship America horses for $28/turn.
I ship the Mongols Ivory for $4/turn and 2 workers.
I have nothing else of interest to report except for selling our maps for pennies.


Summary:
I think I started World War 1....

Rails saved us big time. I still think Hotrod0823 should have paid more GPT and less cash, but things worked out. We are close to a military rail-net except for the fringes where sending workers isn't safe. The rails have already help to hire more taxmen.

Every penny I can scrape up is being used to upgrade our military. We are still incredibly light on troops with a severe deficit for artillery.

Any peace treaty before my next round may destroy our rep. Please be very careful with singing peace.

I am up in two other games as well. I will likely start late tomorrow night though, as I have no plans for Friday. Early Saturday at the latest.

Seems like a job very well done. The Infantry is of course bad news, just as we have cavalry ....

Partial update, I will have to think on how to deploy my troops, it is an interesting puzzle.

LK75, the end of cavalry draws near. I will try to play my turns on my portable, as I can then watch the James Bond festival on TV during the IBTs. :)

1050 Spend the first hour familiarizing myself with the game. Lots change when rails come online, and we are at war with several powerful enemies.
It is a whole different game on deity, and having slow contacts didn’t really help.

I fire up one scientist for a min run on Communism. With some luck, it could be worth some money in another 50 turns.

Heh, you know there are dire straits when LKendter leaves cities without a garrison, but I have several core cities empty, while we are fighting on the fronts.
I make a careful draft in cities at size twelve, with food/happiness to spare.

I seem to have a nice stack of cavalry and a cavalry army with moves left, but I am hesitant to leave the rails though, as the Songhai stack is still present. It is tempting to strike back a bit though.

Diplomatically we are at war with Persia, Songhai, Russia, Iroquois, Aztecs, Venezuela and India.
Do some minor fiddling, most telling that I switch to cavalry on Madagaskar. I suspect one cavalry is not enough to oust a rifleman from the Russian city.

IBT: Songhai declare on the Americans. Babylon and France sign against Iroqs.
Songhai cavalry goes 1-2 against our riflemen and muskets, and no cities switch ownership.
Aztecs of all nations land a pair of Medievals on our EASTERN shores.
Persia gets us into trouble. The kill the reinforcing rifleman heading for our exposed northern city, and they drop seven cavalry and a rifleman on Madagaskar. It might be safe to write off Madagaskar for some time now.

Get Pentagon message,

1060 I have a lot of workers, but I will have to think on where to use them. I want Memphis back, but it will be hard to hold until we can get expanded borders. I also want to send troops to Madagaskar, so it doesn’t look like I give it up without a fight. I will have to think a while before I commit my troops, as I am uncertain I can do both the above tasks, while still reducing the Songhai troops camping inside our border.
