Pitboss is a way Civ4 to me played in multiplayer. There is a server, and a set amount of time for each player to log in each turn and play his move. Usually it is 24 hours. After this, the game advances automatically, so the next turn is to be played. Such game can well last over a year (1 turn a day) but the level of micromanagement and diplomacy, which this allows is unmatched
This is like to start a game and play each day just 1 turn, but not against stupid AIs, but against humans
Yeah, it is pretty cool way of playing civ4 indeed.
I am not familiar with setting up a server, but the civ4 comes with everything needed. However on the client side, all you need is to type the server's IP in the civ4 multiplayer menu.
I am currently in 5 pitbosses at the same time now
