Looks like Civ 6 is done: Kevin called April "final game update"

Hmm. Complete. Ultimate. “dare I say, FINAL”.

I think we’re done. Shame.

I’d really thought we might get another pass, and very much thought the game had the scope for that, particularly as the back end of the game still feels so underdeveloped. But it seems FXS are moving on, and we’re basically done. Really is a shame.

Would definitely be curious to hear the internal dialogue thinking about another season pass or not. But overall, given that this season pass was over, all the devs and team did their flashmob thank yous, and now we have the anthology, sounds like it's done with content. Hopefully they can give one last little balance/bug fix pass through, but overall, it's been a good ride, and I expect I'll keep playing the game until the next thing comes out, whatever that may be.

Both Civ 4 and Civ 5 had a final patch that seemed to have come out a signifcant time and shortly before the annoucement of the subsequent series so who knows. I do expect one little patch to finish everything off.

It does seem odd for FXS to stop development after NFP.

Civ VI seems set up for new content to be added easily - extended tech tree (quite empty in the later eras), separating leaders and Civs and now having “persona packs”, and of course game modes and season pass model. Also, while GS and NFP added a lot of content to the game, there still seems to be a lot of stuff still not done and just room to expand generally, particularly around Ideology, Governors, the back half of the game, and just popular stuff from previous Civ versions. NFP took a small stab at some of that, eg Secret Societies (Governors) and Corporations (end game and bringing back fan favourite mechanics), but all very limited. And then there’s just the fact NFP has sold well etc. You’d think all those things would suggest FXS would want to keep development going.

But yet, here we are. If having Portugal and Trebuchets in the game and flash mob farewells didn’t suggest FXS were done, then I think describing “Anthology” as Complete, Ultimate, “dare I say, FINAL” really leaves little to no doubt. I could imagine there are commercial and or creative reasons not to keep working on the game, be it diminishing financial rewards, needing to develop new IP, or just creative exhaustion. But still, it really seems like a pity, a missed opportunity, not to do one more season pass or small expansion.

To be fair, Civ VI is in really great shape - it’s an awesome game with everything added in. I’m not surprised the FXS team want to move on, and I can’t really blame them for moving on either. But it is disappointing.

I certainly think there’s appetite for that amongst the fans and players for more content. I hope FXS do decide to do more. But sadly it really does look like they’ve decided it to end it here.

The Civ 6 AI can win a science, culture or diplo victory. It can't win a domination victory or a religious one.

Hmm, I suppose so. This is probably the first time in a few years where I was actually worried about losing beyond early game. And this was "only" immortal difficulty. I was thinking about why the game wasn't over, and they actually put themselves ahead.

Yea Japan was doing pretty good with the culture. His tourism sucked but had lots of rock bands and censorship to shut mines out. I had to do the same.

Still pretty close in the end
Spoiler :

I mean yea my start and civ was bad, but still.

I am getting so sick of Firaxis riding the maybe train ("Anthology?" Not "Complete?" Or "Complete Anthology?") while all of the one-on-one interactions with devs clearly indicate they have no expectation of additional content.

There is some sort of major disconnect between corporate, marketing, and/or development and it's irritatingly unprofessional. For claiming to have "the best fans," they sure do love stringing us along.

When Firaxis says "best fans," they meant most gullible. Firaxis likes fans who can easily be manipulated.

Civ6's development is finished. We can deduce this from a zombie mode being added to a historical strategy game :p

That being said, there might be a bug patch/small balance patch again, maybe even multiple ones. But as far as new content, I think it's finished.

The bigger question is if/when the source for the dlls will be released so that modders can go extra crazy.

I don't think they can, I suppose they would have done it long ago if that was the case.

But if they can, yep, even a late release would be better than nothing.

Agreed. In all fairness though, if they cannot, they could do us (their fans) a favor and simply say so.

I think they did say already they have no plans to release them.

Was the April update the last update for Civ 6. If it was, so disappointing. Emergency system is so broken.

I'm not saying one way or another, but having files like "DatabaseDLL_FinalRelease.dll" in the binaries folder dated 4/22/21 doesn't give any warm fuzzies regarding future updates.

that's the naming convention since the game's release back in 2016, "FinalRelease" files (as in "GameCore_XP2_FinalRelease.dll") being the final release for a specific public patch I think, while simple "Release" files (as in "GameCore_XP2_Release.dll") are maybe build with debug flags (ie running slower with code helping to debug)

Gedemon points out a good thing to remember - the word "final" is a heavily contextual word. It's important to know what it is actually referring to in order to understand what it is saying. I'd say that it means final version of that file, rather than the final file to ever be released.

Still, despite holding that the title of the thread never was really evidence that Civ 6 was over, I think for other reasons that there will be no further major updates, but I'm really hoping they'll do a few patches and fix a few things before deciding to give it up for good.
