Looks like Civ 6 is done: Kevin called April "final game update"

(music excepted--Geoff Knorr was on fire).

This is really where I am most sad about the game ending. I think Knorr should just keep composing for civs that could have been...release it as an album lol.

(and then modders could use it for mod civs)

I am in all honestly ambivalent towards new civilisations, but I really think some key gameplay changes could make the game perfect:

  • World Congress that's a carbon copy of Civilisation 5's, because that one truly was perfect: votes based on city-state suzerainty was sublime and made diplomacy feel dynamic. Being able to decide on resolutions also made diplomacy genuinely something you wanted to be a part of, as opposed to going "ah, it's just a vote on +100% production to a district - it'll go to the city center anyway so I won't even bother."
  • Some civilisation or other ability to have essentially what Byzantium had in Civilisation 5: a bonus, non-exclusive belief which can also come from the Pantheon belief pool.
  • Any kind of way to influence the government types of other civilisations. If point 1) above is taken, then diplomatic favor could be re-used for such a mechanic: essentially a kind of diplomatic strong-arming or sweet-talking to get a better deal than you normally could. Accompanying this would also be a sharper relation between tourism and government in the late game.
  • Puppet cities, again as per Civilisation 5.
  • Unit gifting, yet again like Civilisation 5. Simply being able to park a unit in another's territory and click a button to give it to them would add wonderful strategic depth.
These are all from Civilisation 5 not because I have a deep nostalgia for it, but because they were good and smart gameplay options which could enhance the otherwise better gameplay of 6. Admittedly, I have no suggestions for making the AI handle this increased complexity: most of these would have the biggest impact in multiplayer.

There should be no shame in reusing stuff from earlier games that just worked and every one of these qualifies

If I were a pragmatic business director , I would stop here and start preparing for the next opus , letting the wave of humankind pass. Once most ppl played it at length , I would start a new cycle of announcement and release. Now as a player , I think they never finished civ6 and that's a bad conclusion. It sure has a lot of content but the mechanics are still too raw , wether it's on the core or the mods.

Right now Civ6 is in a very unpolished state, no question

I think whether or not the the April Balance Patch (and subsequent patches) actually addresses fundamental issues like AI not improving luxuries, or the terrible UI, or if it’s just a bunch of number changes to civs (that breaks a bunch of new stuff) is going to be the Make It or Break It moment

And again, to address the “whatever, you’ll buy Civ7 anyways brand slave” I would again like to point out this was the exact attitude towards Fallout76 and to the Xbone launch and that blew up hilariously in both cases.

Gamers not only have more options now than ever before in gaming history, but the whole kickstarter thing has created the potential for Davids to actually compete with Goliath like never before

So we remain stuck with garbage AI and no dlls. Count me out for Civ VII.

I'm bet on F'xis working on Civ7 as we speak.
HUMANKIND is coming up. and is made out of what ignored in Civ6.

Yes that's what I'm expecting as well with HK being the real successor to Civ IV - will need to wait until August and see.

Part of the reason for the New Frontier Pass is that the old model wasn't a great business one - you made a lot of money but there were peaks and troughs. Having a long time when your old game is out but the Devs are in the early stages of a new one means lots of people with little to do just now but you know you will need them in 6/9/12/18 months. The Season Pack model keeps everyone engaged for longer and your core devs can still move on to the next big thing. I think we've seen the last of major expansions personally and full expect NFP Season 2 before Civ 7.

I am going to reserve judgement till I see the April Patch. Right now despite the issues this is my second favorite Civ game since CivII, which is why the unpolished state it is in is so agonizing.

If the patch addresses the majority of the broken/niggling things that keep coming up on these forums then I’ll be keeping an eye out for Civ7

If it’s just a bunch of glorified number changes, then well into the Fool Me Once graveyard it goes with Halo, Gears, Fallout and Far Cry

I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

I'd buy it in a heartbeat.

Honestly it was the soundtrack that got me into civ to begin with. And like 90 percent of the reason why I bought every dlc unseen (or in this case, unheard).

This steady past of content, that also breaks many mods for each update they do, are killing my will to play Civ6. Spent almost 4000 hours in Civ6, but have almost never been able to finish a game. So I haven't played a game since October last year. Like to play it really slow, but during NFP, my games has last over several patches. And my mod setup doesn't like that very much.
And there are still game-braking bugs, so the NFP was a mistake, in my opinion. They should made the game stable as close to 100% human possible. Then could they release new (paid) content, but without a timeline. So they had propper time to fix new bugs.
And all this "game-mods", some of them so game-changing that they could be their own games, are in my opinion cut content. But many of the stuff have I never touched. Only played as 5 of the Civs, none multiplayer stuff, no senario. That stuff could be optional DLC, but noooo....
Segregating the modding community, to "force" more people to buy the extensions (R&F, GS), has diminish the playerbase.
The mods are the only stuff left, and without complete DLL files, more people will grow tired of this game.
It's just sad.

"ah, it's just a vote on +100% production to a district - it'll go to the city center anyway so I won't even bother.".

While I don't want to disagree with the overall intention of this part your statement, I want to mention that you have picked a pretty bad example here ;) Yes, for along time AI only voted city center, but now the Campus often wins, too - and I would not even say that the Campus just only replaced the CS, as I have seen other districts getting voted on as well and some voting where pretty close. So if you invest a moderate amount of DF, you actually have even chances to turn the tide for a district to prefer.

However, as initially stated, you are right that some resolution votes are very predictable - my personal pet peeve is the border control treaty here ( [NFP] - [1.0.11.16] Predictable AI voting logic for Border Control Treaty resolution | CivFanatics Forums
), which you can reliably win by just voting twice for yourself.

What is/are expected to happen in August 2021? Humankind release or what?

Speaking of multiplayer, I wish grievances actually mattered when playing against human players. In singleplayer you have to kind of play around the grievances and use casus belli's to avoid pitting the world against yourself. In multiplayer grievances don't matter at all and everyone just surprise wars eachother.

Though heaven forbid they do a public poll for the next batch of civs, because it will probably result in something looking like: Italy, Austria, Denmark, Ireland, Romania, Finland, Bohemia...and probably the Iroquois.

Nah if there's a public poll, I'd bet money that Sealand will be meme'd to the top 10 at the very least. Don't give them ideas!

I can kinda get some of these, and I mean we already have vampires so why not Romania, but Italy? We already have Rome!

Really?! That really surprises me (I never play MP). Also surprising that I didn't see anyone complaining about this before.

I kind of feel the opposite. Rome being in the game might not preclude an Italian civ, but I think that the Sanguine Pact might preclude a proper Romania civ for Civ 6 considering Vlad Dracul is a possible name for a vampire unit.
I mean Rome did not stop Bologna, Venice or Vatican City from appearing as a separate city-state.

I just saw this quote now. I haven't been active in this section of the forum for... a while.

I have to admit to something. I haven't been active in this section since... Babylon was released? Mostly because I was so attracted to what Humankind is going to offer that later on I had a passing interest in the new civs in the NFP. I wanted something new and fresh, and Humankind is offering that. Of course, that doesn't mean I won't play Civ6 at its state. I haven't played much Civ6 because life has gotten in the way. I am going to play it with all the NFP civs, and with the better game modes. And I am looking forward to seeing Civ7 in the future, but the hype on that depends on what they'll be offering. So there, my statement of treason. :dunno:

I complain a lot about it here, but that is because I see so much potential and I enjoy playing it so much, it just has a lot of rough edges that could use some love.

I tried Stellaris, which is supposed to be the easiest paradox game, but I found the UI just impenetrable. That level of detail is not really my strong suit

The learning curve for Paradox games is insane, I can understand why the UI can be too much.

(music excepted--Geoff Knorr was on fire)

This :agree:

City states are not civs

Honestly it’s just not worth the effort to figure out the Paradox things

I already play a lot of Civ6 and Fallout, I mean the last thing I need is another thing draining my life away
