Lost Eden development thread

It helps if there is someone responding.
True, but I'm not complaining. ;)

Too bad, I like the land transport.
Well there's always the chance that they make a comeback! I mainly failed to see the point of a 1 move transport that didn't heal units, and the AI would build quite a few of them if they had a discover priority. I have a similar problem with naval transport, in one game a Pirate AI had a sea transport on every single square that it could manage (over 100 of them). What do you do with them? :)

I think that it was nomenclature or something big like that. The theme of Lost Eden.

I don't like the name either. How about just Guard?
Not sure, I am trying to differentate them from Charmander Defenders (1/3/1). They are (or will be) human boy guards. I decided against making them clockwork units as they are later tier.

I like that. Are they impeded by the fungus equivalent or the forest equivalent?
...
Same question as just above.
They are gravships. :)

I assume attack and movement is 1.
Attack is 0, movement is 2. These are Armoured Colony Pods.

I assume you meant +50% PSI defense. The change looks good since they can't be built.
That's right. I always meant to give them the +50% PSI defence, I just accidently gave them +50% PSI attack.

Heads up display? Where do you change it?
The PCX files! I'm moving onto the larger things, like the monolith achievements thing, as well as interface doodads like buttons. I will eventually have the whole thing redone completely.

How can it be too risqué when all the units and leaders have no clothing?
It goes down to pose and the intent of the image (nudity =/= porn). In Saig's case, he was presenting and I was like "I don't want to see that".

What restriction? The one on the number of icons?
That's the one! Some units, like the Spy, look pretty out there at the moment.

How about my vacation as an excuse? As a result of my almost internet free vacation, I've joined a gym to try to keep improving on the fitness. I will make this thread a priority because of the friendship we have (and I will monitor my own forum and I would like to continue to work on the wikipedia article but I am not sure how much time I will want to devote beyond that).
I'm not looking for excuses, but for action. I am glad to hear that you are developing a well rounded lifestyle! I think that most of the people who visit these forums could do with some more fitness, myself included. :mischief: Thanks for considering me as a priority too. :D

That fits into my schedule. I want to make a great effort in the gym (and lose 10 pounds) and take care of a particular matter.
Go for it! :goodjob:

More in the nature of a retreat from life and the internet. I did make a lot of friends. I am in better shape and my head is clearer.
Sounds great vyeh. :D God be with ya. :)

A lot to do, so please don't feel the need to rush your reply!:)
I took a good half hour to type it so it's all good. I'm happy to take things as slow as you like. :)

Post 300!
And there was much rejoicing! [yay]

But more importantly, getting a release candidate version out in the forseeable future is something that I am really looking forward to doing, I know that I can only do so much in the way of balancing and playtesting. :)

You could give them hover chassis. However, armor would be a good benefit plus a unit in a transport can't be subverted.

I think that it was nomenclature or something big like that. The theme of Lost Eden.

That sounds right.

How about Youth Guard?

Attack is 0, movement is 2. These are Armoured Colony Pods.

Can you create new cities with them?

That's right. I always meant to give them the +50% PSI defence, I just accidently gave them +50% PSI attack.

Since they can't attack, it is useless.

Not only fitness, but getting away from the computer!

Go for it! :goodjob:

Thanks.

Sounds great vyeh. :D God be with ya. :)

And with you.

I took a good half hour to type it so it's all good. I'm happy to take things as slow as you like. :)

Well, I'll try to respond at least every few days. Still have a lot of catching up with the WP article.

And there was much rejoicing! [yay]

It is an accomplishment. And hopefully it will show in the finished product.

But more importantly, getting a release candidate version out in the forseeable future is something that I am really looking forward to doing, I know that I can only do so much in the way of balancing and playtesting. :)

That is something I am looking forward to.

You could give them hover chassis. However, armor would be a good benefit plus a unit in a transport can't be subverted.
I'll think about it. I've just never needed to use them before. Convince me!

How about Youth Guard?
I don't think so as they are a bit young. Mhm... I'm thinking that perhaps I should alude to their speed or something else. I'll probably crack out the reverse dictionary sometime in the future.

Can you create new cities with them?
Yes. Yes you can.

Since they can't attack, it is useless.
Exactly! :D

Not only fitness, but getting away from the computer!
Ah a truly well rounded life! Well that's great vyeh. :D

Well, I'll try to respond at least every few days. Still have a lot of catching up with the WP article.
How much is left for you guys to do?

It is an accomplishment. And hopefully it will show in the finished product.
Yeah! It's definitely very different from SMAC and that's an achievement in itself. It's a lot more balanced than when it started.

That is something I am looking forward to.
That's right. Having more than just 302 posts about something that isn't realised outside of my house. Of course I'll need to coordinate it with Petek, perhaps send him the whole thing and get him to approve/deny certain images, or something. We'll sort it out when the time comes.

Oh I don't think that I mentioned that I did change Oblivion's logo so it was no longer the same as the Gaians. I have. :p

Hard at work (or at least trying to be!). I've got one more assignment and then exams... :goodjob:

I'll think about it. I've just never needed to use them before. Convince me!

There is a thread at CGN about the benefits of land transports. However, I will point to two:

(1) if there is an attack, the relevant defense factor is the transports. So this certainly fulfills the purpose of an APC;

(2) After the APC has moved, the transported unit can unload and attack. Or if the APC hasn't moved, the transported unit can unload, attack, and reload and the APC can take the transported unit away.

I don't think so as they are a bit young. Mhm... I'm thinking that perhaps I should alude to their speed or something else. I'll probably crack out the reverse dictionary sometime in the future.

How young?

Ah a truly well rounded life! Well that's great vyeh. :D

Also the TV.

How much is left for you guys to do?

In the Legacy section is some material about the 3D voxel. We should hunt down the sources. SMAC may be the only game that used 3D voxel (the company that promoted it -- Animatrics -- is defunct). Then the notes need to be cleaned up and linked to references. Then there is going through character by character and seeing that it conforms to the WP MOS. Once that is done, a review process to get the article Good Article or Featured Article status. I probably should check all the edits that were made while I was gone, but Nolelover and I have always been on the same page, so I have looked at his comments on the discussion page (that is how I knew Wood Elf had merged the articles about the three Ely novels into the article and I was able to go there and minimize the disruption by tightening the description of the novels and moving those descriptions into the Further Reading section as annotations).

Yeah! It's definitely very different from SMAC and that's an achievement in itself. It's a lot more balanced than when it started.

Well, I am glad to help. I have responded to many requests and only scient has repaid my investment. If you release Lost Eden, then you will join scient.

I'm asking that a version that you are comfortable with releasing be posted at CGN. I have no problem with images.

Oh I don't think that I mentioned that I did change Oblivion's logo so it was no longer the same as the Gaians. I have. :p

Good.

Hard at work (or at least trying to be!). I've got one more assignment and then exams... :goodjob:

Good luck on your assignment and exams.

10-14? Although I'm thinking that if I add APCs into the game (as it sounds like that you would use them at the very least) then I could replace the "Boy Guard" with APCs and make the problem moot.

How about an APC that's 0/2/2, 4 rows? Call it Clockwork Carrier or Clockwork Transport or something with a Clockwork prefix.

Also the TV.
Sure fair enough, TV can suck sooooo much time. Well whenever I do release this, don't play every faction in one sitting! It'll be like those civanon fake ad things.

Command and Conquer: Tiberian Sun and Command and Conquer: Red Alert 2 both used voxels. I can't say if they developed their voxel format or not (they used VXL (the voxels) and HVA (the normals)), but yeah they definitely did use them (I had a TC for Red Alert 2 in development for 3 years until I gave up over nobody ever being interested). Just so you know! :)

I can't say anything other than good luck! I'm not a Wikipedia man myself but go for it. :)

Well, I am glad to help. I have responded to many requests and only scient has repaid my investment. If you release Lost Eden, then you will join scient.
Thank you! I do intend to deliever. It's a bit sad that people are so unreliable though hey.

I'm asking that a version that you are comfortable with releasing be posted at CGN. I have no problem with images.
Well that I can do that really anytime as it would get an "alpha" label pasted all over it. Images such as the dialog boxes, heads up display, etc. that appear can be added in later, same for quotes and all that.

It's tempting, despite a few leader pics missing. If you don't mind a version with some noncritical images/sound missing, then I can compile one over the next few days -- I would at the very least like to have a Boy Scout pic so that all the units are done (currently it's a Squirtle with "Sympath." written on it). I'll admit that's been one image that's been hard to find/make... perhaps doing a recolour of the Spy to start or something, I don't know. Charmander Defenders are Charmanders with "Defender" written on although I don't mind that one so much. :)

I think my friend will take some time before I'll be able to convince him to give me another half hour so it may end up being the very last thing that would happen. God only knows.

As for content I may still send it (if you are up for an alpha) to you before posting on forums to see what you think. I'm fairly comfortable with posting the content as long as people keep their heads about it. Moderation may be required. It's not an adult mod. :) Some of the leaders may need censoring as some get more complaints than others.

Good luck on your assignment and exams.
Thank you~!

I can't say anything other than good luck! I'm not a Wikipedia man myself but go for it. :)

Or overambitious.

I'd rather wait for the finish product.

I don't currently have access to a computer with SMAC. (I have SMAC and SMAX, but the computer is an Intel and I am not sure how I would load a OS 9 game onto an Intel.)

I think my friend will take some time before I'll be able to convince him to give me another half hour so it may end up being the very last thing that would happen. God only knows.

As long as I can see the images without going into the game.

Thank you~!

You're welcome.

Boy Scouts?
Tier 1 Human unit, same as a Scout Patrol.

Transport is -1 to movement, so you would have to use hover chassis, which has a terrain advantage.
Or grav-struts. But yeah I can do that! Sounds like a solution to the problem of bad naming.

So can books and other forms of entertainment.
Sure. :) May it all work out for you!

They use 3D animation? Were you able to modify the 3D graphics?
They used sprites for infantry, buildings and animations; Voxels for vehicles, ships and planes. I did once make a voxel for the game (very basic) but others have made many, many things for it.

Or overambitious.
True. Some people also get bored.

I'd rather wait for the finish product.

...

I don't currently have access to a computer with SMAC. (I have SMAC and SMAX, but the computer is an Intel and I am not sure how I would load a OS 9 game onto an Intel.)
Okay sure! I have a PC version of the game. I'm not sure if files for one work on the other though.

Like I said before, it shouldn't take me too long once exams are done on the 19th.

Keep trying.
I will. If it doesn't prove possible I can always flex my own drawing muscles.

As long as I can see the images without going into the game.
I can convert them to PNG and send them to you.

Tier 1 Human unit, same as a Scout Patrol.

That's right. Could use Eagle Scouts or Eagle Guards for your Boy Guards.

Or grav-struts. But yeah I can do that! Sounds like a solution to the problem of bad naming.

I think land transports are overlooked. Maybe you could put the APC in and try playing a game against the computer concentrating on finding uses for them.

Sure. :) May it all work out for you!

Right now I am trying a lot of different exercise classes to see which ones I like. One of my favorites so far is a 5 am (!) one. The one class I attended involved running around a parking lot and doing lunges and jumping jacks. There were only about 7 others there and they were quick to welcome me. Some of them had been doing it for ten years.

I am glad that you aren't one of those.

The files do, but the application doesn't. On a computer that no longer has access to the internet (I should check the WiFi card), I have the files and the Mac application (unfortunately it is no longer available on the Internet - Brad Oliver, one of the people that ported SMAC/X to the Mac, use to have more stable carbon - OS X - version than the official carbon version) and it would probably be a matter of transferring the files (since I own multiple copies of both the Windows and Mac versions of SMAC and SMAX, it is OK for me to have SMAC/X on two computers - just want to make it clear that I am not suggesting any type of copyright infringement, but just a way of installing SMAC/X on a machine that does not have OS 9).

Like I said before, it shouldn't take me too long once exams are done on the 19th.

As I said, this is a priority for me. I have only looked at one other thread at CFC (it had scient in the title) and only one other forum (Apolyton) besides my own (both are slow). And I have looked at WP. Otherwise my use of the Internet is non-entertainment.

I will. If it doesn't prove possible I can always flex my own drawing muscles.

I have learned on my vacation that it can be fun doing new things.

I can convert them to PNG and send them to you.

That is fine. Let me know via CGN PM if you need my email.

That's right. Could use Eagle Scouts or Eagle Guards for your Boy Guards.
Yeah! Although if I put the APC in that would fill the defensive role.

I think land transports are overlooked. Maybe you could put the APC in and try playing a game against the computer concentrating on finding uses for them.
I'll give it a shot! :) I'll do some research and let you know how I go. :)

Haha seems pretty out there! I like crazy fun. It's at a pretty early time though! Especially with that whole DST that you guys have.

What software did you use?
From memory it was the first one here.

I am glad that you aren't one of those.
Thanks. :D

Good on you vyeh! :goodjob: Well let me know when you want playable stuff, I'm sure that you are looking forward to it.

I have learned on my vacation that it can be fun doing new things.
Ah you seem to have misremembered: I try to do some artwork weekly! I'm quite able of doing some things myself if there's nothing else for it.

That is fine. Let me know via CGN PM if you need my email.
I have. :) I'll probably send a few PNGs of all the leaders and units in your direction when you respond.

Yeah! Although if I put the APC in that would fill the defensive role.

I forget. Do grav strats allow one to overcome forest and fungus terrain penalties?

I'll give it a shot! :) I'll do some research and let you know how I go. :)

Since most players don't use land transports, the APC will help make Lost Eden different from vanilla SMAC.

Haha seems pretty out there! I like crazy fun. It's at a pretty early time though! Especially with that whole DST that you guys have.

Besides being the hardest exercise class, the biggest plus is how quick everyone - instructor and exercisers - were to welcome me. It is nice to belong to a community.

From memory it was the first one here.

That will be useful if someone else asks about editing voxels.

This thread engaged me. Although it was a lot of work, it was nice to be part of a creative project.

You're right. I forgot. It has been awhile.

I have. :) I'll probably send a few PNGs of all the leaders and units in your direction when you respond.

I see you got my PM. In the past, I was more likely to check my PM's then check my emails.

I forget. Do grav strats allow one to overcome forest and fungus terrain penalties?
No, it's just +1 move. :)

Yeah. :D

It is, same as how I was welcomed here.

Yeah! I don't know if they are compatible formats or not but I thought that I should mention it.

This thread engaged me. Although it was a lot of work, it was nice to be part of a creative project.
Yeah, thanks for all the help hey!

You're right. I forgot. It has been awhile.
No problems. :)

I see you got my PM. In the past, I was more likely to check my PM's then check my emails.
Sure! I've sent the units and leaders now. There's a few more things but these are the most common. Let me know what you think. :)

Thanks. :)

Sure! From the feedback I have recieved from people in RealLife, Lukas and Oblivion may need redrawing/cropping as they get lots of complaints. Saig's already had this happen as I didn't like 'im from the get go, as I mentioned.

I am recovering from a mancold at the moment.

Just to keep this thread going (it is so easy to get drawn into PM), I should note that we're not discussing the version for CFC, which will be "family" or "general" rated. We're talking about the "R" rated original version for CGN, which doesn't have to worry about children wandering into the SMAC forum from Civ 5. (I've seen similar depictions in "Hansel and Gretel" when I was growing up and my mother was very conservative.)

I have PM'd you via CGN. Besides the art work, is there anything else that needs work, e.g. diplomatic language?

Good call on remaining here :). While I have the personal belief that nudity is G (Australia's classification system agrees too) the Civ Fanatics variant will have it toned down so it's kept within established guidelines. The release for CivGamingNetwork (haha I wouldn't use "R rated" as that implies other things :mischief:) will have Oblivion and Lukas redrawn as they have leading line issues*. I should be able to figure something out; I'll use the Boy Scout for Lukas when I draw him. I have an Oblivion pic already, I just need to shade it.

Haha I am slightly curious as to how nudity got into Hansel and Gretel, I can't remember any of that in the story. :crazyeye:

I have previously watered down the diplomatic language a bit. (looking through them again now) Oblivion still has a few crude references although not very many. Victoria has references to neutering as that's what she's about (not explicit). May be a case of getting your/Petek's comments, but let me know what you think. :)

As for general development, I hope to get a game using human forces in soon. It's a little disconcerting using humans that have a squirtle icon though. XD

*see here for a definition on leading lines: http://photography.about.com/od/gloss3/g/LeadingLines.htm

Good call on remaining here :).

Although I am limiting my SMAC internet to this thread, CGN, Apolyton and the WP article, I think our activity in this thread helps keep the CFC community active. I have been pleased at the continued viability of the CFC community while both of us have focused our attention elsewhere. When scient is ready, CGN will be there for him.

Obviously, Americans are uptight. Thanks for the link to the leading line site. I agree that is the issue.

For some reason, illustrators use to have the boys dressed only in a shirt. Maybe America wasn't so uptight in the 1800s.

I don't think there is a problem with Victoria as long as it is not crude, e.g. "I will make you a eunuch" is acceptable, but "I will cut off your [deleted]" is not. You will have to check with Petek but a couple of borderline crude references might help establish the character of Oblivion and might be acceptable.

As for general development, I hope to get a game using human forces in soon. It's a little disconcerting using humans that have a squirtle icon though. XD

Keep watching for scient's return!

I think this is interesting even for readers who haven't seen the images.

Hehe Apolyton never did respond to my email asking for a password request. Looks like it was destiny for this to be my home. :D It is nice to see that the community here is still active. Yay community! :culture:

Being serious though, if the mod is liked by others and attracts more people here, then great. Haha maybe we'll get a "GOTM" for this one day?

Obviously, Americans are uptight. Thanks for the link to the leading line site. I agree that is the issue.
Haha I didn't want to say it. I may end up living over there reluctantly. Games jobs (what I am studying to become) are near non-existant in WA, there's a few eastern states, but big places are US and Japan. As for nudity tolerance, I hope that some of my mods help that out a bit. I won't overdo it though as that's not the point of my life.

For some reason, illustrators use to have the boys dressed only in a shirt. Maybe America wasn't so uptight in the 1800s.
Perhaps! I think that the origin of those books is in Europe which would also make more sense.

You will have to check with Petek but a couple of borderline crude references might help establish the character of Oblivion and might be acceptable.
Hehe because there's two female leaders I can't put in gender specific threats even if I wanted to. There's nothing stronger than the word sterilise in the entire text file. As for Oblivion--I agree--I'll PM Petek when I have finished typing here. It's not swearing though so it could be in with a chance!

Keep watching for scient's return!
I wasn't told that he left! (I was partially aware as you mentioned "when he comes back" or something). Ah well I'm sure that you'll keep me in the loop. I'm also sure that you noticed my request to shut the AI up... haha my friend gets soooo annoyed when playing.

Tying in somewhat with the above, I've always felt that it would be great if more diplomacy lines could be overwritten by factions. Oblivion and others could have a lot more character. :)

I think this is interesting even for readers who haven't seen the images.
Yeah! Knowing the basics of graphical design helps when trying to describe what's wrong or needs improving in an image.

..Being serious though, if the mod is liked by others and attracts more people here, then great. Haha maybe we'll get a "GOTM" for this one day?..
why not?! i'm looking forward to your release.
