1709. We dispatched our leftover troops, numbering about 400 men, from the Dutch Guyana to secure other revolting island territories previously belonging to the Netherlands, when our transports were hijacked by Caribbean pirates.
Interesting how stateless ruffians have given the Kingdom its greatest setback in ten years, compared to the British and Dutch combined. We will have to deal with these pirates at some point, though right now the Kingdom's navy will have to stay along northern France to combat the Royal Navy.
Most of Claude de Villars' army has marched down to southeastern France, a bit north of Toulon. Before we provoke Savoy and Austria into a war to expand into northern Italy, His Majesty has asked me to conclude the war with Britain.
Our ambassador to Britain has been authorized to offer William III a status quo ante bellum peace, whereby we would return the captured province of Maine and demilitarize America. However, it would appear that this is not satisfying to them -- perhaps they are planning some sort of offensive against the Ohio valley, and are waiting to see the results of this before settling for an end.
Seeing as how the Kingdom is in a stalemate with the English colonists, however, I sent word to the Governor-General of Québec to dispatch some 600 men to Wyandot to subjugate the Indians north of Newfoundland. This likely will not be a very financially useful territory, though the thought of Canada being invaded from the north is a remote possibility that should be dealt with.
1710. Excellent news has arrived in Paris. A British armada was sailing from northern Spain, when it was caught by the full French navy:
Surprisingly, most of these ships were depleted of their ammunition and badly damaged from skirmishes against Spain, giving the Kingdom its first major victory against the British navy!
Our admiral Lavoisier was mortally wounded by a roundshot during the battle. While our sole loss in the battle, a single Fourth Rate ship-of-the-line, was replaced by a captured galleon, the fact that we lost our most skilled naval commander is saddening. Nevertheless, this is a crushing victory, and combined with the scattering of the Dutch fleet two years prior, it has decisively put the Franco-Spanish maritime forces at the forefront of the world. So soon as we repair our ships can we begin a blockade of the Britannic isles.
This great victory, however, has been calmed by a shock that swept across Europe: the Electorate of Brandenburg-Prussia has entered the war against Poland, and in only a year of fighting, a combined Austro-Prussian force has breached Polish fortifications and captured West Poland.
Perhaps the Kingdom should increase its aid to the Polish cause -- or perhaps we should immediately enter the war to prevent the balance of power in eastern Europe from being shattered by German expansionism. As it stands now, the Ottomans have refused an alliance with us, and thus we are currently isolated from having much influence on the sector. Currently, my policy will be to intervene unconditionally should Bavaria fall to Austria or Prussia, but until then, there is not much we can do.
