So was it really like the excitement of the iPhone like they said. I say no. here is the link if you don't know what it is. http://www.apple.com/ipad/

No. Its a bigger, dumber version of the iPhone.

In other words, its probably going to sell like hotcakes.

In fact, I think that the iPhone has a better feature set. Besides the screen space, the iPhone wins on pretty much everything. Battery life? Check. Camera? Check. 3G? Check. No big ugly bezel? Check.

The other part is that its built on the Apple A4 which means that it will take a bit of time to get a port of any decent OS to run on it. I dont know about what kind of architecture the A4 is, but it sure as heck aint x86.

Sadly I fear you may be right. Or more likely - it won't sell much at all, but it'll still be raved about constantly in the media, with people thinking it must be the best selling computer ever.

If tablet PCs do become popular ever in future, Apple fans will hail this as another Apple first, even though there are already tablets of various forms, and there's nothing special about this one.

I do agree though. What's the point of making a phone bigger, if there are no advantages added? For years people took the piss out of a phone that was slightly bigger than the latest phones - is this the iBrick?

For that size, you can get fully fledged computers such as netbooks which are far cheaper anyway.

From what I saw it will have about the same battery as iPhone, it WILL have 3G, camera, not sure. But I think an iPhone is a better buy.

I just got post 1,000! WOOOOOOOOOOOOOOHOOOOOOOOOOOO

It will have 3G for an added price. the iPhone has 3G as a standard feature.

My wife and I have been contemplating getting a Kindle for a while now and if it wasn't for the price, we would have gotten one already. Of course, there's also the fact that we have too much invested in physical books, but that's another story. If the reader is as good as the Kindle is reputed to be, then I'd be tempted to spend the extra money on an iPad due to the additional features. I do have an iPhone, but I'm not that excited with it. Granted, for the price of an iPad we could get two Kindles.

Either way, the iPad will be out for quite a while before we seriously consider getting one.

Edit: We own a Mac btw and love it!

And thats just the starting model. Once you go to the full-featured one, you can get 3 kindles.

The thing is, this price is actually not that high once you think about it. A brand new iPhone costs something like 500USD. Because most people get it through AT&T they never actually see that price, they see the 199$ or the 99$

The iPad compared to this is only a big more expensive, but it also has a bigger screen (and an IPS LED panel at that too, pricey!), a more powerful processor (Apple A4 which is a 1gHz part compared to the iPhone Samsung ARM which is at most a Cortex A8 at 600mHz), more storage.

Too bad that its drawbacks are enough to make it undesirable. The lack of 3G as standard and the lack of flash (who the heck doesnt use flash these days? Say goodbye to 90% of internet rich media) are particularly problematic.

If you're just comparing it to the iPhone then it will compare pretty well... But compare it to the alternatives (netbooks etc), or even other smart phones (Nexus One, Motorola Droid, Palm Pre, etc) and it just doesn't make any sense paying so much money for one.

The thing that kills it for me is that, the whole point of a smart phone is the portability. I can carry the entire internet in my pocket. WTH am I supposed to carry that thing in?!

Just like Mise say, don't compare it to an iPhone.

It's not because it looks like a bigger iPhone that it's one ... it's not supposed to, it's clearly to compete with Kindle, not a phone .... OO !

A Kindle with internet and iTunes in it. It supposed to be a read thing, email eventually if you want. A Netbook and a Kindle in the same.

I like it. I'm not sure if I would get one since I don't read that much on my computer. It's too hard on eyes and brain but it's always bigger than the small iPhone window ...

Someone said it doesn't worth it 'cause it doesn't have camera. Do you books have a camera in it ? When I have my tv program ( which is about the same size as the iPad ) I wonder how I would take pictures with, a bit big for that ;)

I dont think the iPad is meant to compete with kindle specifically. In my opinion its more of a netbook-type thing for Apple. You just cant compete at that high of a price different.

Why not compare it to an iPhone? What can you do with the iPad that you really cannot do with iPhone? And the reverse of that, what can't you do with an iPad that you can with an iPhone?

Well, the iPhone is ... a phone. So it is merely use to phone people ;)
And well, since smartphone is what people like, than, go this is a simple smartphone and this is why people like it so much.

That's exacly what will happen to iPad, people will like it because it does what it does simple and easy.

What I can really do with iPhone ? I cannot read ... it just plain stupide to try to read news with this. That's what the iPad is for. Reading. Mainly. I guess ;)

I'm curious about the reader. It appears that the ebooks are going to be shown on a typical screen, which means there is going to be a lot of eye strain. One of the supposed benefits of the Kindle is that it's e-ink and therefore its very similar to reading a book and therefore, no eye strain. Staring at a computer screen for long periods reading is going to be very straining.

I've seen a lot of people compare it to a kindle, but the ipad is not an e-reader.

The key features that make things like the kindle and Sony's ereader so good are due to the use of e-ink, which gives it long battery life (10s of hours, as opposed to up to 10 hours), because it only uses power to change the display, and also looks just like paper (I've seen the Sony ereader, and it's nothing like a normal LCD - it really does look like paper).

The ipad is no such device - it's just a normal LCD. And if you're happy reading stuff on that, but what a device that does more, why not get a dirt cheap netbook?

It's not because it looks like a bigger iPhone that it's one ... it's not supposed to, it's clearly to compete with Kindle, not a phone .... OO !
Then it's worse than the kindle for the reasons I give, at a higher price.

You won't have this problem if you get a real e-reader.

Indeed - I did wonder if the ipad was a plan to make the iphone look good, as people seem to only want to compare the two ;)

It's be like being back in the 80s, with an oversized ibrick ;). I saw this article/picture, and thought it was a parody at first:

Just to answer the poll. I'm a bit disapointed. Still waiting for the "one more thing" part.

Ok, so, if it's not an e-reader, than what is it ?
I'm asking 'cause I'm also wondering. Some sort of netbook ?
I insist, it is not an iPhone, it can't phone remember ;)

As for iBrick back in the 80's, it had another name : Newton ! ( it was a neat idea back than )
