Hey guys,

Got a Mac book pro recently and everytime I try to play, my game crashes - doesnt matter what setting either. Can anyone explain why?

Thank you.

At which point does it crash? After Civ5 has loaded and you see the menus, or even before that?

Oh, and the specs of your Mac please.

After its loaded and in a game or sometimes in the loading screen.

Quad core intel i7 2.6 Ghz
8gb ram
Graphics Intel HD Graphics 4000 512 MB (also have an nvidia one not sure if that makes a diff)
OS X 10.8.1

Anything else you might need?

So basically at random points?
Hardware looks okay (and yes, if there's also a Nvidia card in the machine, it would make quite some difference for the performance). The next question: Are the drivers up to date?
If the machine struggles at every point, then something more underlying could be the problem.

this is also the retina one

There doesn't appear to be a driver update for the Mac on the store unless there's a different way of checking for drivers that I'm not aware of. It's weird because it looks really grainy too so perhaps switching to the NVIDIA GeForce GT 650M wont be a bad idea. I don't even know how to switch it... ugh.

Hey thanks for that man and being awesome in general trying to help me out. The internet connection at my naval base sucks so it's awesome when someone is willing to help out like right away!

I can't give any advice from personal experience, as I don't have access to a retina MBP. However, here is an existing thread that may give you some ideas. I believe Aspyr have been reported to be working on a fix.

Hey Alan.

Yeah, I was just checking out that thread and damn it this sucks lol.

i just got a 13 inch macbook pro last august. i would like to play civ v but am concerned that it won't work given all of the stories i have heard. i played civ iii and iv and over the past couple i have been bummed about not being able to get in on the civ v experience. i just want to know if it's at all possible for me to play this game.

edit: i'm actually using lion

I ordered this exact computer a week ago today and it is due to arrive this afternoon. I have already put in a return request to Apple and ordered a 15" model with the 2.6 ghz processor and 8 GB of ram because of all the suspect things I am hearing about compatibility with Intel HD 4000 graphics card.

I have to be able to play Civ 5.

I didn't get the retina one, but my specs are the same. I just ordered it this morning and it will be here Thursday. I will let you know if a non-retina display makes the difference.

It could be the resolution you are trying to run. The macbook should automatically switch to the Nvidia Geforce GT 650M.

Are you running it in OSX or Windows through bootcamp?

 I have no idea if the Retina display is supported.

Because I think Alan or Ryan will know :D.

Sorry, Alan doesn't know. I'm several hardware generations behind the curve nowadays.

I have a two year old 13" MBP on Mountain Lion, and a seven year old MacPro on Lion. The MacPro can't even run Mountain Lion. So I have to rely on others to show up and give advice and experience on current hardware.

i'm tempted to download it and take my chances. i really want to play it. after doing some research, it appears that the intel hd 4000 is currently supported.

I received my 13" MBP (with intel HD 4000 integrated graphics). I only played the game for a short while on high settings just to see what would happen. It ran VERY HOT and the leader scenes had what looked like bugs crawling all over the foreign leader I was talking to. But the game did run.

The desktop PC I am replacing with the macbook had a geekbench score of just over 2000 and it ran Civ 5 on minimum settings just fine. I bet the macbook pro 13" (with geekbench score of over 7800) can run it on minimum just fine too. But as the game goes later and later it might bog down a bit.

While I was running it on high, during the early parts of the game there was no lag whatsoever. But I didn't play long.

Interesting. Everywhere I've looked I haven't seen that the intel HD 4000 was supported. I will have to look again.

i just downloaded game of the year edition. i assumed it would have come with the expansion, which it didn't not the end of the world though. got more civs i would like to try. it works well on low settings. does anyone have experience upgrading RAM on MBPs if it gets really bad?
