This has that insane-neo-Western thing in spades. I haven't seen Thunderdome since it was in theaters, so I can't say if it bears any resemblance. Scratching at the back of my mind is a flicker of a memory of an old Western, but I can't remember what it is. I get a bit of a Conan the Barbarian vibe too; the crazy cultists and the main villain have a dirty, sword-and-sorcery look about them, Howardian rather than Tolkienesque.
It definitely looks like something to see in a theater, if you're going to see it at all.
I would say that Beyond Thunderdome is about a third of a good movie, the beginning and ending are pretty good, but most of the faux-Lawrence of Arabia middle section with Max wandering around the desert with kids doesn't improve much on watching a blank screen for the same amount of time IMO (George Miller actually co-directed it with someone else, so that may be a big part of why it feels a bit like two different movies clumsily mashed together). It's been a while since I've seen it too (on DVD maybe about 10 years ago) so my reaction may vary if I watched it again.
Every once in a while, I rename one of my cities "Bartertown" when I'm playing a multiplayer Civ game.
