Make random events more detailed & more elaborate

The modification that MUST (do you hear me Firaxis?) be done is changing graphic for the mountain involved in the volcano event to spew smoke and lava for the rest of the game. Then I wouldnt mind the event itself.

Only for a limited number of turns, surely? That was magnificent in Civ III.

Another random event they might include is workers going on strike in a city - pay XX gold to improve working conditions or the strike may continue. And *teachers* go on strik - same thign except it means no reasearch in the city.

I hate to say it, but those are two very good ideas. Should be implemented ASAP

Southern and evangelical Americans are not an ethnic group. They are simply a category of mainstream Americans with some weird ideas.

The worth of cultural patterns may be "an opinion", but I maintain that female mutilation is evil, as is sati, slavery, racial discrimination, honour killings, murdering female babies for being female, genocide and many other cultural phenomena. One must draw the line against cultural relativism somewhere, without bothering too much about semantic or philosophical quibbling. The same goes for terminology: I was not engaged in discussing whether one should talk about ethnologists, human anthropologists or culture studies.

On topic: How about a Great Barbarian who suddenly appears and turns some of your citizens into barbarians who have to be suppressed or re-assimilated? Or the possible appearance, after the discovery of Scientific Method, of creationists who drag down research for a number of turns? "In the city of Bombay, a group of religious fanatics boycott the schools for not teaching the tenets of their religion as science, which has drastically hurt education and research there. Pay XX gold, or the aberration my spread to other cities."

Absolutely, and I agree with you on these issues, but they are opinions and flaming isn't cool on the forums.

By the way, Southern Evangelicals absolutely have their own culture and therefore are a sub-culture of American culture. They may not be an ethnic group (and neither are gypsies, they are a culture. they span many ethnic groups) but they are a culture.

I won't draw lines

they could go extinct (just become a mountain) or remain dormant/active for varying amounts of time. if earthquakes occured they could affect any cities within range of the epicenter.
global warming blatently needs sorting out. pity because if they made it better I think it could bring a really good aspect to the game

I know techinically this is true, I wont deny that, but at lot of people use the terms "Gypsies" and "Roma" or "Sinti" interchangably.

I'm just saying.

I fail to see how I could be accused of flaming you, or anyone else for that matter. I did mention "quibbling", but surely that word is not so strong that it constitutes flaming.

I also fail to see the distinction between calling the Gypsies "an ethnic group" and calling them a "culture". They are a group of people who speak the same language (or various closely related versions of a language), have a common cultural (and to a certain extent genealogical) heritage, traditionally lead a nomadic life and arose as a group of people who migrated from India long ago. What you choose to call them is rather a secondary matter, isn't it? I suggest we end this particular discussion here.

Back to topic: how about a random event where the quest is to make friends with your worst enemy? To transform him from "annoyed" to "friendly"? That would be challenging and quite interesting - and something that could often have negative consequences for your relations to other civs, so if you undertake it, the reward should be great, not d'uh-ish.

Hehe, yeah, especially if you run a theocracy ...

You could make some Unit-promotions that are attainable by events only. For example, there could be a "holy war" event (again, if you run a theocracy, and are at war with someone of different religion), that gives some existing units the "fanatical" promotion (hm, +1 movement, +10% strength?).

On the other hand, both effects are already in the game (the research loss by the dissolution of the monasteries, and by NOT running free religion, and theocracy already provides an xp bonus)

I wonder how many people would complain about the re-introduction of volcanic erruptions if they netralized global warming?

Why would they do that? They're the natural source of global warming, chucking a large amount of CO2 into the atmosphere..... not that global warming is a bad thing... when it's natural!! :D

Your reaching now, bro. Technicalities do not change the fact that these are two groups that use religion, language, and cultural tendencies to define themselves as a group. I don't rightly care what the technical terms for these are.

I don't think you were flaming by intention, but challenging any culture's beliefs (no matter how "evil" one thinks they are) is flaming in my book.

Now I can agree to end the subject here.

ON TOPIC: As to your comment about the quest to make friends from annoyed, I've never experienced it and I hope to. I like to have as many friends as possible in my builder/peaceful games. I wish I could get this quest!

1. I am puzzled. "Two groups"? I thought only one was under discussion. Perhaps you refer to the fact that the Gypsies are apparently divided into two subgroups called Sinta and Rom, but even if they are, they are still all Gypsies. In the same way as both the Gegs and the Tosks are Albanians.

2. I don't care if some people think that female genital mutilation is a good thing; I regard it as an evil custom and I will not stop saying so because you call it flaming. It isn't flaming in *my* book; it is an opinion I feel entitled to express. Others might feel free to say that they think all abortions are evil; I disagree, but I would not accuse them of flaming for saying what they think. But I don't believe we'll get any further with this discussion either; it would be as pointless as continuing the discussion of Gypsies.

3. The quest to make friends from annoyed was a suggestion I made; to my knowledge, it doesn't exist in the game. I wish it did because it really would be a challenge.

An outlaw folk hero? Robin Hood/Poncho Villa/ Jesse James/Butch Cassidy/ Al Capone... Who could cause you trouble while creating extra happines? What if these rogues could "blockade" a city, road or railroad the way a privateer does a port, skimming money from internal trade routes? Or maybe only destroy banks ?

I love the idea of the religious school boycott!:goodjob:

Teacher's Strike- Trigger- mass media

" Our teachers and professors think the grass is greener in other cities. They are on strike. All research has stopped . What shall we do?"

1 "Wait them out. One way or another things will return to normal in due time." No research for X turns.

2 "Resolve this NOW!" - :gold: Research resumes to normal.

3 "Institute comprehensive reforms. " -:gold: lump sum and per turn. Increase :science:

I was thinking about the stratospheric particles reflecting light back into space...Kinda like the Nuclear winter effect, which doesn't seem to work the same in civ as it's supposed to IRL.... Oh well.... As long as my wife controls the temperature she won't complain.;)

Oh, crap. I was looking forward to seeing it in the future. Maybe someone will put it into a mod? Maybe we can mod it in ourselves? Anyone know the file to edit?

I really, really hope the people at Firaxis read our suggestions here as carefully as they claim. Also because that might awaken them to the insane spy spamming and terrorism agaisnt you that even your AI "friends" in the game engage in.

My previous post has inspired me to another suggested randiom event: "The great detective Sherlock Holmes has offered his services to you. Pay [fairly hefty sum] and make all enemy spy missiond against you impossible for 10 turns."

The spy spamming by allies / vassals (not capitulates) really needs to stop. I'm pretty sure Solver's patch / 3.13 has spies handled more intelligently by the AI. I believe they changed the coding so AI spies do the full range of espionage options including saving up points to steal techs. That sounds good, but please... less spamming!
