I was shopping at amazon when I recalled seeing holograms on sale at Hamleys (London, maybe the best toy shop in the world) So I decided to shop around for holograms over the internet when I found that you can buy your own holography kit and make your own holograms. Is not the coolest thing ever?

I hope the mods don't regard this as an advertisement. I am just opening this thread to let people know that nowadays making holograms is not as expensive as one might think.

Hmm. Could one copy the hologram on the 500€ notes with that?

Looks real cool! But $100 for the basic kit? :(

Pretty cool. My first thought was to make a holographic gift for my girlfriend, the details of which I cannot discuss here. ;)

When we did this in Uni, we had a massive HeNe laser with carefully positioned optical devices (lenses, mirrors, beamsplitters, etc) held in place by an electromagnetic base that was "floating" such that it was perfectly horizontal, and they still turned out like sh*t. How in God's name they convince people that they can do this at home with a 2", battery powered, glorified laser pointer held up by a wooden peg in a polystyrene cup I'll never know.

I was thinking a couple weeks ago that a hologram of the brain would be a good teaching tool. It's very hard to get people to understand the 3D locations of parts of the brain, except through repetition of looking at photos.

Thats pretty damn sweet!

@Eran- Good kit? Improving technology? Low quality?

I'm not an expert on holograms by any means, these are just guesses.

But can they be programmed to say, "Please state the nature of the medical emergency?" :p

Looks like a nifty thing, but too pricey on my budget.

It's Mise :p

And my guess would be Low quality too. I'm sure some anally retentive nerd will spend 3 years making his basement into a shudder-proof, pitch black laboratory and produce a decent hologram of a penny or something though.
