Making turns faster

Hey everyone.

I love playing mods like CCV and RoM:AND, but once I get to around the Middle Ages, the turn times become unbearable. No idea what it's like in the modern era, as I continually give up. A few weeks passes, I think to myself, 'It can't be that bad...' and try again, and remember why I gave up in the first place.

My question is, with these mods which are based on RevDCM - with other things added - what specifically would be creating these turn times? If I could sacrifice a few bells and whistles for some better turn times, I would - provided it didn't defeat the purpose of the mod, of course.

Any suggestions? For the record, I like things like realistic culture spread, PerfectWorld2g, influence-driven war, advanced dip, mastery victory, and don't play with revolutions turned on - going from 5 civs in the world to 20 isn't much fun, and I guess would increase the turn times even more.

It could just be your computer isn't up to it. I know that for example I can run road to war with little trouble on my desktop, when I tried it on my laptop (which is pretty close to minimum requirements to run the game) the slow down is unbearable.

Just an opinion.

CIV4 is a big memory suck. NO matter what I play, I eventually shut-down and restart which helps a lot. do this when you hit a point where the game really slows down. There should be some improvement after restarting. Don't play anything bigger than standard maps and the normal number of AIs.

Try lowering your graphic settings a bit as well.

I don't think you game options really matter. It's the art in these mods that generally cause the problem.

Besides what lymond says, turn off the music and background (ambient) sound. That should also take some of the load off the computer.

Thanks for the suggestions. It's a little frustrating, because on the vanilla BTS, I can play with the settings maxed out, and it barely slows down going into the modern era, at all. I do turn graphics down for the mods, and they play smooth, it's just the waits between turns that make it unbearable.

Unfortunately since tasting the mods, I can't go back to BTS, haha. THere are a few mods that run okay, but don't have the future era, or are missing mastery victory, or are just unstable. Which is why I want to play ones like ROM AND and CCV.

It's a modern laptop, 4GB (running with the 3GB switch to avoid MAF errors), dedicated ATI graphics, duo core, etc.

Some of the really large mods are so big that they can bog down just about any computer. Since some run okay, perhaps the ones that slow things down unacceptably for you are those biggies that have added everything including the kitchen sink.
