Went to see if the new units might have some variations for different civs but nope.

I understand Man-at-Arms is a European term but the unit itself is trying to depict an armoured fighter of which there are many examples.

Even just having some different helmets/hats and maybe just having a couple of different weapons could have looked good. Rise of Nations 18 years ago was doing a better job with a few broad unit styles that stretched across the eras but Civ 6 has some variation but basically gives up in the Reneissance era and makes everyone look European.

Really hope Civ VII does a better job of representing the civilisations it tries to depict.

Yeah it’s a shame, especially since it’s a medieval unit and the others have at least a tiny bit of variety. It would have been great to see more diverse polearms and armour particularly — they could have used ashigaru, Rajputs, Otomi, etc as inspirations for heavy medieval infantry. It sucks that the whole world looks the same after the early eras.

Each iteration of Civ takes just one tiny step forward in cultural diversity. Hey, at least skin colour is a thing now.

Looking forward to Humankind, which tries a bit harder.

Firaxis: Here, have a free new unit in this free new patch!

Civ fanatics: BUT IT DOESNT HAVE MORE THAN ONE MODEL!
Let me do a little equation:

One free Unit + two other free Units = three free Units.

I'm somewhat disappointed that the Men-at-Arms doesn't have any cultural variation, but just a little bit. I didn't really need them to do that, so I'm overall fine.

I approve of them using Becs de Corbin.

One Total War: Warhammer model probably costs around the same as one Civ Leader model (the most expensive thing from new civs). TWW has had over 30 Free DLC that add one or more new models (along new mechanics). Civ6 sits in 18th place in the "Most Played Steam Games" list, TWW isn't even on the list.

Stop settling for scraps

Meanwhile back in 2004 Rise of Nations...

A selection of Arqebusier and heavy pikeman units from various nations (see top left), no unique units just generic skins. As an added bonus there's some line infantry at the top they din't get added in a free patch because they were already in the game at release!

But fair enough lets have a look at musketmen in Civ 6 they've been in since the base game and the Pike and Shot has been in since Rise and Fall expansion.

Ah yes Aztecs ruffled collars.

I’ve thought about if Civs should get multiple replacements for various units but I don’t know if that’s in the budget

Based on what they said when they presented these units, they weren't even planned to be added when Firaxis started developing the pass, being something they decided to do last year, so it probably wasn't feasible to add cultural variation in time for the update. It's also quite obvious by now that they are working with a reduced team, with a main team working on Civ VII, or on a dog petting simulator, so they probably don't even have the man power to do that many hats.

I think the Trebuchet has cultural variations though, or at least the Mayan Trebuchet in the livestream had a shield that was quite Mayan. It probably reuses stuff from the Catapult.

The siege crews are made up of the corresponding era’s melee unit: catapults are manned by warriors, trebuchets by swordsmen, bombards by musketmen etc. The variation comes from the swordsman graphics.

Nitpicking.

Gives up in the renaissance? Yah because all units do start to look the same. What does an aztec coursier or steamboat even look like?

They cant get it right even if they tried. I guess put aztec bird feathers all over their post renaissance units to make them more central americanish?

Not to mention the typical cultural style isnt even kept by each nation as world gets more modern. China doesnt style its battleships with traditional style.

If anything past a certain point firaxs is right in ceasing the traditional cultural themes for each civ.

Who cares about the Man at arms not looking more culturally unique when there's a huge elephant in the room.... The AI doesn't even upgrade swordsmen into men at arms, but instead chooses to suicide them on military districts with walls, let's just please collectively as civ fans get our priorities straight.

There is plenty of references that could be used for reneissance units. Theres no reason to give a civ like Japan for example a European style musketeer when we have tons of references for actual japanese troops with firearms that don't look European, or just go play Shogun 2.

I'm not talking about ships, yes a battleship is unlikely to have vast variations in design but theres still differences in uniforms up to world war 2 and beyond.

As for what Aztecs might look like well I already showed Rise of Nations but there is also this.

Yes its a DLC and paradox's model for DLC is controversial but I'm using it as an example of what a reneissance or post reneissance unit might look like. I don't expect unique models for every civ but even some broad cultural groups like Mesoamerican, East Asian, Sub-Saharan would be something.

It's a bit disappointing, but this is fortunately one of the areas where mods can deliver incredible value to a game.

I would love to see cultural variants of all units throughout the whole span of the game (come on, Mayan/Aztec giant death robots!), but I can also understand that this is a fairly minor thing that carries with it a pretty large expense for the developer.
