the problem with barbs is, that you have to prepare for war no matter how you want to play.
it's easy to hold the AI back for some thousand years and then concentrate on military. but you can't hold back the barbarians.
and in some games they could get really annoying. had some games (raging barbs off) where they came in wave after wave giving me no room to build improvements and crush my newly created reinforcements shortly after they have been build.
that's not fun. usually i just start a new game when this happens.

Actually, in my mod I have significantly upped the Barbs. I love this part of the game: The race to get copper, build some axemen then sit back and reap the experience.

I know the feeling. I had a game a short while ago where the barbs were knocking off my Archers faster than I could rebuild them. They eventually even captured my capital. I was not amused.
