Funny. Anyway. So far I do not have any trouble using the map in worldbuilder. You are lucky I have not made the 300 x 150 or 360 x 180 maps yet.

I think that SpriteSODA is saying your map will be unplayable on most computers when it is full of Cities and units.

The fact that you have had no problems in WorldBuilder is irrelevant if you have not placed lots of Cities and units and then tried playing it.

Good effort though. :)

Harrier,
I realize that. I was being sarcastic. So, far so good. I just loaded the map a little bit ago with all 18 civs. I am very concerned about memory issues. I have a max mem capacity (if I buy the memory) of 4 GB. Right now I have about 500 MB free in the WorldBuilder. but we will see how it goes.

Update,

I'm about to release my beta version of the map.

I'm asking for some opinions.

I'm working on adding all the starting locations of all 18 civs (even though I don't like the Mali and I'm iffy on the Americans).

I still need to add Mountains, trees and resources.

I need to figure out where to place tribal villages. Also does anyone know what a minor tribe is?

Can you release your actual Version? I'd like to have a look on it and i might be able to help.

G-Max,

I'm using my old "standard". It is a partially cropped map that I scanned from a two-part atlas. It was the only one I found that had terrain features and rivers. I really wanted to use NASA's Blue Marble Map, but it did not have river placement.

I changed the map by adding Firaxis' Africa and S. America maps. It saves some time.

There is a passage into the Black Sea. Turkey and Constantanoble aren't connected.

The only real issue for me is where to crop the Northern Hemisphere. I think everyone will enjoy the final product. Filling in terrain on this map is tedious.

Here's a tip: if you have to do any cropping, then you're using the wrong projection.

River placement can be guesstimated with reasonable accuracy using blue marble plus the power of teh Wiki. You'd have to do it for civ starting locations anyway.

The Asian and European parts of Turkey are so close together that you could swim from one to the other if you really wanted to.

Personally, I don't think that accuracy should be sacrificed just to save time (Africa and South America), but that's just me being an obsessive perfectionist.

Actually G-Max, the projection I'm using is a Miller projection.

I only put distance to allow for boat traffic, but now that I think about culture borders will kill that.

I will probably put in the proper Continents after I release the beta.

Kurt-Roges,

Ever since Civ3 came out, I was looking for an atlas. I found one at Barnes and Noble. I had to take out the two-parts of the atlas, but it works nontheless.

Now moving on to Civ IV applications. This map I found in the atlas is a Miller projection map. It is a physical map with rivers on it. I like the map personally, even though I wish it were more detailed.

What I had to do was scan the map. I use paint shop to crop the map and resize it to the demensions that I want. In this case the eastern and western haves are set to 1280 x 1280 pixels each. Paint shop can add a grid overlay on top of each map set to 10 x 10 pixels each. In this way I get a 128 x 128 map of each hemishere. Together I get a 256 x 128 world map.

Now I still have to use my judgement on the outline of the map, river placement, and hills and mountains. I bought a small Geographica's World Reference for soil placement and forest placement. It uses a different projection on these maps so I have to really guess.

But that is what I did. I plotted the map outline on large sheets of graph paper. That way, I could make adjustments. I hope this helps. I didn't use any Wiki's on my map.

heh, thanks, but I knew most of that from reading your previous posts in the thread. My comment was more addressed to G-Max, who mentioned something about a wiki related to the Blue Marble project - it sounded interesting, and I was hoping for a link.

And re: mapmaking tips... again, thanks, but I picked up everything I needed to know when I was working on my 217x119 map.

best of luck with yours :D

Update,

Here is the first Beta version of the map. It has all 18 starting locations. However, I do plan to redo Africa and S. America. I still need to add Forests, mountains, natural resources, and villages and tribes. The map should at least give you an idea of the finished map.

Note, there are several desert areas that represent flood areas.

could you make this map so I play it useing the civs I donwloaded from a mod

Slavic Sioux,

Too be honest, I'm not sure how to do that yet.

Update,

The map is in remake, but the outline of the map won't be too different. I went to Barnes and Noble the other day and found an Atlas that I really liked. It is a Miller projection. It has better definition of terrain with a version of the terrain showing vegetaion. It has a few more rivers to plot. It also has natural resorce placement as well.

I am really enthused that the map update will be far better than the current beta. I should have some screenshots in a few days.

Straregyonly,
Well, Happy Birthday.

Well, the remake looks pretty good (as long as I stop making stupid errors). Some things that are different from the beta: more rivers, better looking map, Western Hemisphere is little smaller but Europe is wider. It will look quire awesome. (Just time consuming.)

strategyonly,

I bought a new atlas that I bought a week ago. I scanned and cropped it into paint shop pro 7. Paint shop let me line up the two map haves after I cropped it. Then Paint shop has a grid that I put over the map. then I copy the grid by hand to graph paper. Then I put it into KSWoll's Civ4Editor. After I get the basic terrain done in the editor then I'll finalize it in the worldbuilder.

It may be a long proccess but the results will be well worth it.

Update,

Here is some preview pics of the new remade map. I still have a way to go. Do to other obligations, I have to take a week off.

So enjoy the pics.

Dang you are making one of the best so far, so definately take your time, looks great so far, but like you said, along ways to go, i dont have the patients for that, Good Luck, you'll need it.:goodjob:

Only just found the CFC version of your map thread, Flash. As usual, excellent work! I'll look forward to playing it... I guess it'll be a sort of "test" as to the limits of my computer's power... :D
