^ According to Te Ara - the Encyclopedia of New Zealand, the city name "Porirua" is a corruption of "Pari-rua" in Māori, which means "the tide sweeping up both reaches" (or more literally, "two incoming tides"). I'm guessing this refers to the fact that Porirua Bay splits off into two arms as it reaches further inland (quite a nice drive going alongside either one, too).

Perhaps they wanted to use the "OG" name, like "Ballaarat" in Australia. Still though, I'm amazed they found out about it. I wasn't even aware of it ... Firaxis once again teaching me about my own culture.

I've also come up with nothing for Pari-ru with my own map. Think it must be a misspelling of Pari-rua. In general, if they're not pas, they tend to turn up in MC's Maori city list, and Porirua is there.

Also Canterbury - don't give them too much credit, 9 times out of 10 their sources are the first pages of the "History" section on Wikipedia - and this is no different.

Have you seen the recent Mappa Mundi mod? Adds something like 15,000 place names. I tried to start mapping it and gave up not even a fifth of the way through the first nation's rivers

Excellent maps anyway, gonna have a lot of fun looking through these
