I'm still not 100% on the marble mystery. I know you get a 25% wonder production bonus but...

Is this in all cities or just the one with the marble in its radius?

(i was building one in a city where no marble was nearby and got no bonus, though I had it connected in my trade network)

Does receiving marble in a trade give you the bonus?

From a strategic point of view, if you have marble at your capital is it best to start the game with tradition / wonder grab?

Civlopedias useless!

It gives +25% to wonders only in the city that has it. No others. Marble from a trade does nothing in terms of the wonder benefit.

it's only for the city that first claims it (ie building another city in range won't grant the bonus).
you can hover over the cities production to see all the modifiers the city has. getting it in trade, trading it away, etc have no impact. if it's pillaged you do lose out, if you settle directly on it you don't need masonry to get the benefit.

marble + aristocracy make wonders really cheap.

@vexing, If you assign the marble tile to the other second city that has it in its radius, this one should then receive the bonus while the first one loses it.

is that "should" as in that's how you wish it worked?

it works as i described. as you can see, i assigned the marble originally in tenochtitlan to be worked by the other city, but am still getting the 25% marble bonus.
the other city is getting no bonus.

the same thing applies for circuses, you can only get one circus per horse/ivory even though multiple cities might be able to work that tile

Indeed. What matters is what city originally got that horse/ivory/marble inside its territory.

So this matters for Forges/Circus' as well, the city to grab the tile gains the additional building or bonus.

How come you only have 1 pop @ your capital?

Edit...nevermind

And this is also exactly how it works for Mints as well. Don't ever accidentally steal a gold or silver tile from one of your puppets! Your self-built city that claims it won't be able to build a mint, and your puppet won't be able to get the tile back!

Adding to the good questions, does the Marble have to be 1) mined, 2) worked, neither or both to have the city get the bonus?

I'm pretty sure it has to have the quarry built (unless settling directly on), but it doesn't have to be a worked tile. The bonus still only applies to the first city to claim the tile.

The city needs to be the first to claim the tile. A quarry must be built.
Assigning the tile to another city does not change ownership.

Same is true for horses (circus), mints (gold, silver) and monasteries (incense, wine)

claimed as in that particular city controls that tile... ie if you lose the city, your opponent will own the quarry.

What happens if you trade for Marble? Do you receive just the bonus happiness or do you also receive the wonder production bonus?

I suppose that % bonus doesn't increase if the city has 2 or more resource hexes.

It doesn't for marble. Also having more than one each of Incense or Wine doesn't give more culture to a Monastery (but having both Incense and Wine does give 4 extra culture). Mints work on the resources themselves so there it is the more the merrier.

It might be worth spending a bit of cash on hex buying to make sure that the right resources are acquired by the right cities.

The Marble also need to be in a city workable area, 3 or less tile from city center.
