March Patch Notes (formerly february)

Making too big of a deal about a patch slipping a few days is a great way to convince the community team to stop passing on information as they get it and start only passing on firm, 100% set information.

Seriously, let it go. The patch will be here when it's ready, and hopefully not before.

it is possible that unforseen errors or compatibility problems arose last minute

Bingo. For the hundreds of pages of complaining about how they released the game too early in this forum, one would hope they might get a bit of lee-way when taking their time releasing a patch. If it doesn't come out today, odds are there's a reason they didn't shuffle it out - would you rather have them release it today then be in here complaining about the reason in question the next day?

Well, when asked when the patch would be released, 2KGreg said "February".

Then, it's almost obvious March is another month where he'll have to explain the "Controversial" gimmick called speculative agendas to those perfectly willing to whine over anything written in any number of posts between facts & fiction.
Silly.
Caught in a lie?
Careful, you're asking for PR silence.
As a result, we *ALL* won't know anything until it hits you.

Convincing the "victims" of a con that they are reponsible for it is a nice touch. This is the truth:

Whoever said the patch was going to be released in February 2011 is either a liar or too far down the food chain to actually be in a position to know about such things.

The way of getting over this is to accept its just a game, nothing more and nothing less.

Or maybe it was just the Law of Unintended Consequences rearing its ugly head. Perhaps they fixed something that broke five or six other things, and now they have to fix those also. Not everything is a conspiracy, but it would be nice to get some kind of progress update.

Victims of a con? An expected release date for a free update was given and they might not make it. Don't be so melodramatic. I'm not "victim" and this is no "con" and if you're trying to paint missing a publicly released date as some sort of insidious plan to strike at as in some way or another... You need to remind yourself, this is just a game.

What's next? "They're like some twisted dealer teasing us and withholding our drug - GIVE IT TO ME MAN, I NEED IT! But they'd rather lie and hurt us than be fair and honest. The are EVIL."

Or, that person is giving estimates in an effort to stay in touch with the community, not hard and fast commitments.

Community managers have to take one of two approaches in passing on patch information. They can wait until a patch release date is set and stone before passing on information. In most studios that's probably a day or two before it goes live. Or they can pass along projections and estimates to the community with the tacit understanding that they're just estimates, and sometimes be wrong.

Would you rather have them always be right but you not find out until the day before it goes live, or would you rather have things sometimes slip a little bit but find out much earlier?

This. Having worked customer service from many angles over the years for a company whose core business was reliant on set top boxes and software in such boxes, I can attest that this gentleman knows what he's talking about, and that 2k is in a catch-22.

Don't listen to the whiners. We'd all appreciate more contact with some things like this happening along the way - after all, when it comes to problem solving technical issues every date given is an estimate - rather than stony silence because 2K is too scared from the last time they gave an estimate and every bloody customer had to cream them for missing the date.

So suck it up 2k - people on this forum will complain. People outside this forum will always complain. But keeping some contact I think gives you more cred points than any dissatisfaction from missing a potential release date for a patch.

If Firaxis cant get the patches out in time, then they really ought to quit with announcing them so early. Announce them and have the patch notes up like 1-2 DAYS before the patch release, not 1-2 weeks, or even a month in advance.

Frigging annoying this is!

Yeah but when they do it the other way, they get ten people a day posting "When is the next patch?" "I don't think there are going to be any more patches."

Anyway, I think a lot of people on this forum should remember the MST3K theme song (but replace "show" with "game")

No, that doesnt happen.

I'd rather know one is in the pipeline and have an ETA.*

*The "E" in ETA meaning "estimated," of course.

I am not ready to pass any manner of judgment until both the date of the patch release is known for certain and the quality of the patch is known for certain.

However, I think it is quite reasonable to have this much consternation about the fast approaching date, especially coupled with the idea that another DLC is on its way. 2K has a very fragile reputation right now with the series fan base, in large part due to the quality of the shipped game. 5-6 months into release, most of the major patching that needs to occur at some level still has yet to happen. However, in that same time period, 3 DLCs will have been released (not counting Babs, released with game). I am amongst those that wished they would stop adding layers of paint to the toy to focus on fixing its gears. I do understand that DLCs are an excellent means of maintaining an influx of funds for the game, and are immensely more marketable than AI fixing patch notes, but frustrations are mounting. If in fact the patch is delayed, it creates another PR gaffe for a company which is quickly losing hold on a lucrative consumer base. Trust is a key element when using an update method based on microtransactions. If I cannot trust 2K to maintain a solid working base game, I am more hesitant to shell out $5-$7 for additional content. So, for the sake of this community, I do hope that 2K proves a more reliable business partner than we have seen thus far.

The ETA should add at least 1 month onto their Actual Internal Estimate. So they would usually release early, but occasionally release closer to the release.

Well, I think they've "officially" announced the DLC for Friday.

Guessing the DLC needs the patch, so we can expect it before Friday !! (trying to be the cheery optimist)

BUT, it would be nice to get it today :D
