Ok, heres something-how could human settlement be made possible on Mars? Post any theories that you think could possibly make Mars inhabitable. Please keep criticism to a appropriate level.
 
Pressure domes would probably be the best way to start out. Assuming unlimited resources, it might not be a bad idea to go out to the Oort cloud and get some comets, bring them back and crash them into the surface. Give Mars more mass and more water. And yes, it would take a lot of comets to do this.

Why go to the Oort cloud when the Kuiper belt is so much closer?

Or Maybe you could grab some Centaurs
 
There is that. I was thinking comets for their H2O and there would be potentially more mass to add from the Oort cloud than the Kuiper belt.
 
You've got all the mass you need in the Kuiper belt. We're talking many Earth masses worth of the stuff.

Even better though would be the Trojans, just a small hop away from Mars and good ice content. Not sure about total mass though.
 
Well, you do it your way, I'll do it mine.

Perfection's way is better. His faction would beat your faction in a war (easily).

According to Wikipedia, the mass of the Earth is 5.9736 x 10^24 kg. Some discovered asteroids in the Trojans weigh:

Greek camp:
588 Achilles - 2.6×10^18 kg
624 Hektor - 1.4×10^19 kg
3596 Meriones - (No estimated mass, but it's diameter is 175 km)

Trojan camp:
617 Patroclus - 1.36×10^18kg

And those are just the ones Wiki had articles on - there is a long, long list of asteroids in both "camps". It seems apparent that there is more than we would need for any terraforming project, assuming it's of useful materials.

I dunno, the total mass of Earth's hydrosphere is 1.4 × 10^21 kg. Those other ones are probably significantly smaller. It's certainly a start but I wouldn't say that it's the be all and end all.
 
Build lots of biomes on the surface to generate oxygen, a water cycle etc..
 
I would send unmanned robotic 'diggers' which would excaate a series of tunnels, and caverns before any people got there. They would bring pre-fab pieces to place in the caverns making them airtight, and providing living acutraments. My robotic diggers would constantly be expanding the tunnel network until I had a large underground city.

This would protect us from radiation, meteorites, and provide excellent support structure for my actual buildings so they wouldn't have to be rigid.
 
Mars is a crap place to live.

-it's too cold, not enough sunlight
-the gravity is t0o low (the effects on human growth are unpredictable)
-no protection from solar radiation/wind
-planet is too small to retain an atmosphere

any settlement there would consequently be high unviolable. In fact there's no good reason for people to go there at all. Rather we should concentrate our science and resources on improving the situation on Earth IMHO.

Great idea, but overpopulation is a vald threat, we'll need to get off-planet some day, the sooner the better. The less people on the planet, the better ;)

Settlements on Mars would have to be totally enclosed of course..I wonder if people could deal with not beiong to go outside? Ther ewould have to be massive indoor parks to compensate.

None of those problems will be present for a properly engineered space habitat, in direct orbit of the sun, or merely of a planet or moon. Space Colonies beat out any of the other planets in this system by a long shot.

People survive for months in SSBNs... Without ever going outside.
