Massive gas explosion in NYC levels buildings

So now this post I put in the stupid quotes thread comes to mind:

This happened Thursday when the campus was evacuated due to a series of gas-line leaks:

We started getting notifications on our phones to evacuate while we were in the middle of lecture and we informed the professor and he dismissed us on the spot. On my way out of the building, I noticed a class that was in the middle of a test. Since they were testing, they didn't have their phones out, so they didn't know about the evacuation order. Being a good human being, I poked my head in the door and said,
"There has been a couple of gas leaks and the school has ordered an immediate evacuation of the entire campus."
The professor looks at me with a puzzled look and says, "Even during a test?"
I glare at him and said, "It's your life dude"
Then a student told me to "Stop talking and close the door".

The professor made the students stay and finish the test because he literally values his test over the lives of everyone in the room. I imagine if I had instead said, "GUNMAN ON CAMPUS, GET OUT!" they might have done it because, you know, gas leaks are totes NBD.

Actually, I was going to submit an op-ed to the school's newspaper. Thanks to your suggestion, I'm going to reference this incident. Thanks. :)

from that link said:
he cause was not immediately known. However, utility workers were on the way to check out a report of a gas odor at the time of the 9:30 a.m. blast Wednesday.

EARLIER:

NEW YORK (AP) — A massive explosion leveled two apartment buildings in New York City, killing at least two women, injuring 18 people and blowing out windows for several city blocks. A utility company says a resident in a nearby building reported smelling gas shortly before the blast.

"There's nothing left," said Eusebio Perez, 48, a piano technician who lived in one of the buildings and rushed home from work as soon as he heard the news. "Just a bunch of bricks and wood."

"Two buildings collapsed" and only 2 people died?

Also, a gas leak can make 2 buildings become a pile of bricks and wood?

Fortunately, it was during the day when many people would be at work or in school.

^You are boring and your post is dumb :/ Maybe give up already.

Not everything is a conspiracy. No Germans were involved. And yes, as he pointed out, gas -can- level buildings, which you seemed to be suspicious of from the tone of your previous post, so I am not sure how you think his post was dumb.

In fact, a 20lbs propane tank cannot be stored in a house, because that's enough gas to level the house, should it leak. A gas line can put out a lot more gas than that, depending on the size of the line which is leaking. It mixes with the air and you get an fuel-air bomb.

Behold, a completely non-dangerous gas explosion:

EDIT: Did not see the post above mine. Kinda makes mine seem assholish. Oh well, it's a cool video, and proof that the concept has been weaponized as the FAE (Fuel Air Explosive) for use against soft targets, including buildings.

Well, it has to supposed that an entire truck with a cargo of propane exploding, will create a lot more mayhem and destruction than a gas leak/burn in a single apartment (?).

It seemed a bit extreme that a single burn led to two buildings being reduced to rubble. Anyway, very tragic as well as dramatic :/

edit: nm, just saw a linking video to that truck explosion, from a building in Astrakhan..

The video of the FAE I posted shows how this effect can be produced using a not-large amount of gas. The key is for it to become an aerosol; that is, suspended in the air, like vapor. When that happens, a single spark can ignite the gas, which causes heavy damage through a rapid change in air pressure, in addition to the explosion. Thus, this weapon is called a thermo-baric weapon, because it damages through heat and pressure.

An unfortified building would not require a large amount of thermobaric explosive to be dealt catastrophic damage. Gas in cities is usually tapped into a larger network or a tank with extensive reserves, so if the leak was going for a while, it could have created a very large volume of aerosol fuel.

Here's this concept taken to the extreme:

So as I understand it, local residents say they had called repeatedly over many weeks to report a gas smell. The gas company is taking the position of "no you didn't, and you can't prove nothing."

Oh when TLC used to actually have programming that refers to its name. :(

We need new documentary channels.

Oh you just take that view and get the hell outta here. I only want to watch shows about aliens that do home makeovers for poor people who live off the side of ice roads in Alaska that truckers go flying by on.
