To Turn 150:

Spoiler :

My overall strategy was to get to cannons so that we can do a Jannisary Cannon war very similar to what I'm doing in the ALC with Zara. It's obviously going better in this game since I got such a good first 110 turns,. That being said, I've probably cocked it up. Here are the noteable things I've done.

  • Became Hindu and spread Hinduism all over since it's now the AP religion
  • Used the GM on paper. Probably the worst thing I could have done.
  • Revolted three different times because I'm amazingly stupid. Once for Hinduism, again for OR, and then again for Bureau.

My last few turns I tried not to do anything since that will probably make my save better.
  • I've turned the slider off and we're working our way through Liberalism. We can take Nationalism, but I'm inclined to get either Chemistry or Steel if we can manage it. We need engineer first though, but I think we can trade for it.
  • I have a GE in the capital who's hanging around.
  • I have a settler on the way to a city with a Missionary there waiting for him. Feel free to move the missionary of the settler.

Comments and critiques very welcome.

Yay, now I can go read the good people's turnsets.

Spoiler :

Looks like you are building cottages? Or are those workshops? If you are going to cannon war you should have farms everywhere now and not even be thinking about founding extra cities which won't come in time to help with the whipping post 1000ad. Check my game a page or two back.

@ Grashopa

Spoiler :
Yes, those are workshops. I used to never build these, but now I like them when heading for Cannon, and since we're in Rep and running lots of specialists a switch to Caste is in my future plans. We therefore have a city full of 1F 4H tiles with another food on the way when we get to State Property. Are you saying that I'd be better off farming the whole lot and relying only on whipping?

Interesting point about not founding more cities. I just feel weird having places to settle this late in the game and also be declaring war. I should probably get over this.

Benginal
Spoiler :

Hmm I was thinking workshops for a bit, but settled on farms. I'll have to take a look at your save.

@ grashopa

Spoiler :
I'm not sure if my save will convince you of anything except that a lack of micro-managing is not good. Especially given how easy it is to irrigate this land, farms are probably better. Sometime though when you have to put up a chain of 5 farms to get to a city I think it might be less good, but in this case, farms are probably best. Anybody else have an opinion?

It's also worth noting that farms and workshops are easily interchanged given our large worker force.

My LCD Monitor went to silicon eden yesterday at T122 :-(. I will try to resolve the issue today. So I need more time for my round.

I resolved the issue and finished my round to T150

Spoiler :

As advertised in pre-round discussion I followed LG intention with finishing literature, then continued with Music, CS->phil->paper->edu->lib to 1T->nationalism, plans for gunpowder, MT if the gods will smile on me.

World is in the war...and big one. It seems that the forces are 50:50 since HRE wipes Greeks and US wipe Japan...have to be some historic feelings ;-).

After teching philo I tried the kossin's GA->GPP "trick". To my bad it didn't turned out the way I wanted, but if you look in Konya, fish+2xsugar, fish+rice cities you should see somewhat filled GPP pools. I managed to get in the GA only 1 GS (was hoping for at least 2, but the cities were not big enough... only capital offered big enough base, with the northern city second at size 10), so I made academy in capital. The other problem with the trick was that I totally neglected switching into one of religions, Istanbul is hindu, so taking hindu would seem like good choice.

The Ga ended +- 3 turns from finishing EDU and I made switch of civics back to slavery seeing I will need to whip universities. Capital have uni whipped and grown back a bit. Too bad I didn't manage whip unis in other cities, but I hope you can see the pattern.

I laid some workshops around future production centers and at the fish+sugar+rice city in north east, since there are no hills. We need guilds/chemistry+caste to make them worth working though :-(.

Overall I am satisfied. I would like to strip Charlemagne of those 540 gold he has, but see no way to do it.

I started to build some LB's in capital until OU is up, because the situation is dangerous, Edirne will after HE build caravels for guarding against naval invasion.

well that's it. I hope you will like the save.

I may get the chance to play my turn set yet tonight or tomorrow. This has been a bad week for Civ, so I'm way behind on this and need to run a few SG turns too.

I'd like to submit a report on monday. I've played this round and have the screens, but can post my save on monday at the soonest.

OK, to 800AD:

Spoiler :
My goal was to develop the infrastructure of my cities, expand to cover the island, win the liberalism race, and stay out of trouble. I managed everything but the last. :)

I had to close borders for a while to Pericles, to stop him from settling on the island. I eventually joined his war against Kublai to get him to open borders again, after I finished settling the perimeter of the island. Gilg was Pericles' vassal for most of the turn set, but declared himself free and DoW'd me a couple of turns ago, but isn't able to do much about it because I've got a trireme pillaging his seafood, and he's not willing to send out his galley's under those circumstances.

HRE and Toku DoW'd me too, a few turns back, but no biggie since they can't really do much about us any time soon.

I settled some cities (I decided to split the NE, and give up the Fish):

Spawned some GPs (GE is still sitting around, GA used for a golden age, GS became an academy in Istanbul):

Main unit pump, I'm thinking.

I want the Pikeman in case he tries to get to me, but was thinking Trireme next and then worry about a barracks. Need to build a waterwheel or workshop on that plains river, too.

Spoiler :

Future GPFarm, but still working on getting it set up. The Copper will help.

Moai done, so time to pump units. Figure a Trireme after the LB, and then worry about a rax.

Still getting this city set up, so could spec for production or commerce (to some extent).

So, while perhaps not a great turn set I think the position is one we can work with if we want. The wars are probably not going to be meaningful, since they'll have to get through our soon-to-be-stronger navy, and meanwhile we can build some land troops to hold. Offensive action is probably best deferred until Cannons, but we'll have a tech lead so should be able to kick off that war when ready. The GE waiting could be useful, and if we do get ND that'll be really nice. Once all the wars are over, there are some good trading opportunities as well.

drlake - you have a city that really needs a farm not a cottage :) And GLh routes aren't good enough to give up fish! Are they?

drlake - you have a city that really needs a farm not a cottage :) And GLh routes aren't good enough to give up fish! Are they?

I'm sure I've got an ill-considered improvement or two, but if one cottage is all I can live with that. :)

I don't think of it as trading trade routes for fish. I think of it as trading two decent city sites for one. There are only two locations that can get the fish, the forest or the rice. Either way, while you could squeeze in cities to the W and S of that corner city neither location is any good. By sacrificing the Fish, I was able to split that area into what I think would be a decent production city (the S one) and a decent commerce city (the W one).

Regardless of all that, since the odds of my save being selected for going forward are low if I play a conventional game, I figured it was worth trying something different and seeing how it worked.

Take2 T150
Spoiler :
Teched straight through CS > Music > Paper > Edu > Philo > Lib (1)
Traded for everything else, filled out the island 9 cities and 10 workers. Need to start building units now.
Popped a GS (Academy), GM (Mission), and a GE sitting in the Capitol for Ox. Started on universities also.

800 AD

Spoiler :

I wasn't lucky with the Great Persons, so I decided to use the Great Artist from Music to culture bomb the coastline. I saved the Great Engineer and used a Great Merchant for the golden age.

I traded Fish and 8 gold per turn for marble with the Greeks and build the marble wonders I seemed fit: Great Library, Parthenon, National Epic and Heroic Epic.

I'm 1 turn from Liberalism. I settled 5 more cities and I'm running Caste System/Pacifism. I regret not having whipped more courthouses.

My save is a shadow as I played on from my previous round instead of picking up this round's save.

@Drlake 800AD

Spoiler :

you really took some time to write this detailed rpt, i have a few suggestions.

1. low happy cap, we have lots of resource on this island, should be able to trade for more happy resources

2. not enough farms, at least chain irrigate the farms to get +1 food for all the rice/wheat

3. capital is a super science city, should allow it to grow faster by working more farms. a bigger burea capital is much more powerful than a smaller one

4. what happened to your foreign trade routes? you are getting only 4 trade route coins in your capital! is it because you close border with Gig?

5. at this stage of the game, a powerful city is better than 2 marginal cities (the fish/rice/1x suger site that you split into 2). with added food, you can whip things much faster, or let it grow bigger and use all the extra food to work grass land workshops. that will give you a much better production city or GP/science city. 2 spit slower growing cities with many overlaps and sacrifised fish is questionable.

@ABCF
Spoiler :

War messed with my foreign trade routes and resource trades. Note that Gilg DoW'd me about 5 turns before the end of the turn set.

I'd have to look at the game to see where I could be farming more and connecting rice/wheat.
