Memory-fix by Harkonnen is out!

With the new patch it would seem that this fix is redundant, which I suppose is a good thing.

So I would like to say THANKYOU VERY MUCH Harkonnen for making my game playable for the last month of so. You rock!

Agreed! Cheers to Harkonnen for his incredible work! :goodjob:

In addition, a new config file (ini) option called 'MemorySaver' has been added for further memory reduction, at the cost of alt-tabbing support. If you set MemorySaver=1 in the config file, you can lower your system memory usage by 70% of video memory. So if you have a 128MB video card, you can save an additional ~90MB of system memory. MemorySaver defaults to off, and is not officially recommended since it doesn't handle alt-tabbing and other cases of graphics device loss at this time. However, we recognize that some users may want to experiment with it.

So, 1.52 patch's "MemorySaver=1" equals Harkonnen's "insane_mode=1"...
But does the new patch also have the other Harkonnen's optimizations?

Also... at least should they thank Harkonnen in the 1.52 patch's readme for the idea (and the civ4 credits!).

Hi there-

I'm a new guy, and only tech savvy enough to get myself in trouble... Can anyone tell me where the new 1.52 patch can be found? I had no luck on the civ iv website... BTW, Harkonnen should be paid royalties from Firaxis for the people who didn't return the game immediately. Nice work.

So Hark, would it now be possible to create a 'wonder movies no longer stutter/choke-and-die' patch? ;)

Highly unlikely. I mean did you see what they wrote :

Finally, the use of unofficial patches is not recommended and is largely redundant with the memory fixes in this patch. Unofficial patches may slow performance, cause graphical problems or conflict with Firaxis code resulting in crashes or other problems. It also makes it more difficult for us to respond to error reports and debug issues reported by users running unauthorized patches.

Didn't anyone read that load of rubbish, its blatantly aimed at this. In reality, they should be thanking Harkonnen, but no instead, they tell you its a bad thing. They could just admit, that they probably got a lot of ideas from this mod.

You can't say that for sure, really. They're the one who has the actual code, and because no one from Firaxis actually came out to the forum and made "increment" patches like Hark doesn't mean they're not doing anything behind the scenes.

Thank you for your patches Hark. It helped me play better :)

I say thank you Harkonnen for making the last month of Civing a joyous experience not punctuated by the frustration of waiting 5min to resume playing after hitting the end turn button.
I haven't dl'd the new patch yet but we can only hope that firaxis did as good as job as Hark.

I guess nobody cought my post about this but Soren from Firaxis commented on another site regarding this:

"Sorry, that came off sounding differently than what we intended. Actually, we're very impressed by the work that Harkonen has done and are glad that it's been able to help people over the last few weeks. The point we were making is that people who are patching to v1.52 might want to be sure that they are using all of the default files when they first try the game out again to see how performance/stability has changed. Certainly, a great deal of the code-base has changed, so there is always the chance that user-made mods might function differently..."

how do you uninstall this patch??

I uninstalled Hark's patch( aka rename the zlib.dll back and INI ) and installed the 152 patch. Loaded my saved test game and it played good for one or 2 turns then it really got slow on scrolling. Unplayable. Tried the memsaver on and off. No difference. Fullscreen/windowed no difference.

The good news is the 152 patch somewhat fixes the intro.bik file for me. No longer pauses but sluggish. My son says the 152 patch makes the wonder movies worse but I haven't been able to see that yet. He played a game for about 2 hours and didn't come whining to me.

So... considering what Firaxis says about Hark's patch, in that the two are exclusive of each other. Is this true ? Anyone else having this problem with slowness/slowdown using 152 ?

Thank you Hark, your patch rocks, and was out way before 1.52, which pretty much does the same to improve performance. That says a lot about your programming skills, great job indeed!!

I've had a couple of problems with 1.52, in that it's more laggy than any of Harkonnen's patches to date. I've also had the 'grey leader box' and 'cheshire cat' problem, and I walked away from the game for about four hours today and found it had C'dTD with a fatal runtime error. Never had a CTD until now.

...Although, in all fairness, I haven't uninstalled any of Harkonnen's patchwork; I just let 1.52 write over whatever was there. I'll turn off the patch from harkonnen.ini and see if that helps any.

BTW, for all those looking to install 1.52, go to 'options' from the main title screen and hit 'check for downloads'.

Hi everyone... I am back in the town; didn't try 1.52 yet, 1600km in car overally, so I feel a bit exhaustedl; I will look and reply tomorrow.

On a side note, I'm glad that my hint about number of processed vertices for 2D primitives count was seen by Firaxis :) That big number after '/' in 2D_FRAME_VERTS - the value I would be having hard time to reduce.

I think they're in same trouble with their memory-fix as I was with 'vid_mem_usage' all this time - it either crashes or slowes down. Well, bad hashing optimizations might be causing slowdowns too... all that's from user opinions, I didn't try it by myself yet.

(vid_mem_usage = VB_CACHE_SIZE) - these values are similar. 1Mb = 1024*1024Kb, that's why Harkonnen.ini values looks a little different.

Merry Christmas everyone!

Initial impressions of Harky's latest release...

The patch overall is stable as ever, no crashes, nothing. I haven't tried finding an optimal value for video memory yet; just setting it at 80 for my Ti4200 128MB card and enjoying Civ for a bit :).

I did try insane-mode and alas, alt-tabbing still brings the dreaded black. Doing Ctrl-Alt-Down didn't change anything either...it just ate up a few seconds of CPU and the black was still there, so still no insane mode for now.

I'm gonna hold off on that 1.52...people seem dubious about it. Though I'm curious whether Harky's patch will work on top of 1.52. Has anyone tried it?

With this post Harkonnen you demonstrate that you are not only a gifted coder, but also an exceptional human being.
It would have been very easy for you to become bitter. Kudos to you my friend.
Thank you for your hard work. You have my gratitude and respect:worship:
