menu text+patch

look i'm sorry, I know I am stupid, but I am having this problem. I'm johnny come lately and just got civ 4. I had no problems installing, but when i start playing the menu text looks like gibberish, like thai or hebrew. like this http://forums.civfanatics.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=166759&d=1199059984
also when i down load a patch it wont recognize that i have even installed civ 4. please help i really wanna play this game!

uh it's not crashing. and i'm talking about civ4. its just the text. anyone else care to have a go?

where did you get the game from? is it a cd version or a downloaded one, if downloaded what vendor? did you ever patch it?
is this windows vista or xp?

it's the cd "gold edition", and i have xp.

gold edition is patched to date - so the patches won't work but are not necessary.
As for your problem:
are you using an administrator account?
could you post your dxdiag results file?
