Well in my opinion yes. I managed to pick up a copy of it today for 10 bucks canadian. It comes with an 80min DVD. All i can say is I'm a happy camper.

But to talk about the cd itself. It is quite good. I have to say it sounds very heavy in some parts (make that most parts). I'd compare the heavieness of it to that of the pre-black album era. So for those of you who didn't like metallica due to their "selling out" you'll be happy to know that they did go back to their older sound.

I realy must recommend this album to others who like the sound of metallica in the pre-black album stage of their career.

The one thing I like about this album is that it sounds very similar to the old metallica but hetfield's voice has matured some what. It isn't as whiney (for lack of a better word) as it was in his earlier days.

Anyhow, seeing as many people in Vancouver BC managed to get their gurbby hands on advanced copies this album may be on Kazaa as i type this. So d/l it or wait till June 10th when everyone in NA can get it (dunno when the other releases will be). I don't think metallica fans will be dissapointed as they were with the abomination Garage Inc.

Interesting. I must say, I am curious to hear it. I used to listen to Master of Puppets and Ride the Lightning religiously. ;)

and one more comment. My internet is kinda flakey so I'm on and off. But, this album isn't one of those short ass things that we're used to nowadays. I'm not sure of the running time. But i've been listening for about 60-70 minutes and song 10 just started. These numbers may be off. Its probably closer to 60 minutes. But regardless there are 11 songs on this album and it isn't a short ass thing. It does seem to be worth the money. And again it does come with an 80 minute DVD aswell. So check it out people. you may be presently suprized with the new old sound of metallica.

Isn't it odd that people want them to go back to the way they used to be, when usually we want a band's sound to evolve?

I've written off Metallica a long time ago. Even their old stuff doesn't sound as good to me anymore because my tastes have changed too much since then.

Interesting, I'll have to check it out then.

Did you hear that Vivendi is going to produce a Metallica Computer game? How are you going to make a game about a band ?

I thought their 'new' stuff was just as good anyway. The 'sell-out' calls were just a catch cry for people who reek of effort. Before they recorded 'Load', they were on the road for 4.5 years... after an effort like that they're entitled to do whatever the hell they want!

I'm looking forward to hearing their new CD after your review FS, cheers!

Maybe after touring for a four and one half years, they decided they needed to start making crappy albums so they would`nt have to tour as much. LOL. Whatever, it is their prerogative to make whatever kind of music they wish, but as long as it is my money, I want the goods or I`m keeping my 20 bucks. Personally, I still jam to all the old stuff from "Kill 'em all" to "And Justice for all"....lol oxymoronic names hunh?

\m/

EDIT: In addition, Metallica gave me four awesome albums and hours of excellent metal. I shall award them a second chance and have a really nice day. I think a four album banning was long enough. A failed album this time shall result in a life-long ban, so you better be right about it, dude.

UPDATE: Just got done listening to "St. Anger" the song itself. Started out great, speedy, heavy, I was banging, teeth gritting, and all the sudden it was like slow soft and crappy! I am thoroughly dissappointed in my first impression.

LATER: "Power" is by far the best song I`ve heard so far and yet only gets a "6" on the Metali-scale. I just think Metallica should rename themselves:

"Softallica"

the word Metal has no place is this crappy band

I'm just currious. What song are you talking about? I have the album sitting right infront of me. and there is no song titled Power. the closest one to that name is Purify.

I think it is quite good. I'd say as far as "heaviness", it would sit between Justice and Black, and is a lot better than the garbage on their last 2 albums. I see potential for a lot of these songs to REALLY kick ass live - the effects on the guitar and drums are unique, but I think they blunt what could be some really good headbangin' music.

As a side note, I like what they did to combat piracy. Jumping up the release date and offering free extras is a great way to get people to buy it who would otherwise just download the thing. Hopefully it will be successful and the music industry will realize that if you offer people more than just a case and a booklet for the $10 - $20 they're going to spend, many more people will be willing to buy it.

I saw Metallica last weekend at their 'surprise' appearance on the 2nd stage at Download Festival at Donnington. They rocked! Only had hour set (10 songs in total) cuz of being a surprise appearance and all, but played good songs like 'Master Of Puppets', 'Creeping Death' and 'welcome home (santrium)' along with a couple new ones. Damn good!

I finally saw the st. anger video on MTV2. James & Lars trying to do all those hard ass faces was just embarrassing..

Their 'form' vanished as soon as they decided to become a Ted Nugent tribute band in 1991...:nya:

It's high time they retired the name 'metallica', as they are anything but Metal.

Just the opinion of a veteran rocker.

I am looking forward to hearing the CD as I am an avid Metallica fan. This CD had better be good because I am already extremely pissed off at them for the napster incident, as it eroded much of their fan-base. I will still listen to all their old stuff, which is excellent.

I'm listening to it now, and I have to agree with your assesment,
Metalhead. After "Re-Load", and that song they did for M:I2, I was nervous about this one; pleasantly disappointed.

And yes I actually liked "Garage, Inc." and "S&M"

What was really noticible about when I saw them on the 1st June at Donnington is that they only played one song from the 'black album', 2 new songs and the other 7 were all from their much older material.

I remember waiting patiently for the black album...it seemed to take forever to be released...the hype, oh lord, the hype...so I bought it on CD & cassette (for my van at the time) the day it was released...and I was extremely disappointed.

Today I can look back and ee that the black album is a pretty decent listen, especially when compared to everything else that pop music is/has become/always has...but, at the time, I was a diehard Metallica/thrash fanatic, and the Bob Rock era just made me give up any notion of listening to Metal-lite.

That being said, that I'm an old-school Metallica fan...I actually anticipated St. Anger, especially after reading the previews. Luckily, a local radio station played the CD in its entirety the day it was released, and I was pleasantly surprised! I bought it the next day for $10 (what a deal with a DVD!), and I've been listening to it solidly everyday. It grows on you and gets better.

I would say it is better than the black album and everything since...but, not as good as "Kill 'em All" through "And Justice for All". Those are four of the greatest metal albums of all time, so I didn't really expect them to release something that would be as good, and I had hoped that they didn't just rehash their old style to sell records.

But St. Anger is pretty cool, really. The production is a bit gritty, sort of raw. The energy is the best the band has had since "Master of Puppets", and the songwriting is the best since "Justice.."

They experimented quite a bit, too, which is a bit different for the band. No guitar solos, some strange singing (especially on "Invisible Kid"...very weird), and the drums seem to be a bit muffled at times.

But, all in all, I hope this is the direction that the band is starting to embark upon, and I hope that Rob Trujillo is part of the band and not a hired gun. I would really like to see Rob be part of the songwriting process, because that could take Metallica to a whole new level if he pulls out some bass craziness (ala Infectious Grooves).

I looked it up in my files, but I seemed to have deleted the songs.
You are right that there is no song named "Power" so I am guessing it was purify and I was just too drunk that night.

- OTHERWISE -

I, hereby, proclaim Softallica, thereafter the "Black Album" to be stricken from the record. No name, no scroll shall give mention to this horrible excuse for a metal band.

I miss the 80`s.

Metallica today ---> :vomit:

Your point, caller?

They still sold out.
But I can understand that now they have plenty of avril/manson fans in tow, they are trying to win back the old fanbase.

Some hope.

This is one fan who has moved on to far more engaging rock.
There are better bands out there, for the REAL Metal fan.

One example:
Canadian thrashers, 'Strapping Young Lad' blow Lars and the boys to heck.
