Well kinda: http://www.aftenposten.no/english/local/article1346411.ece

Record meteorite hit Norway
As Wednesday morning dawned, northern Norway was hit with an impact comparable to the atomic bomb used on Hiroshima.
Peter Bruvold witnessed the meteorite streaking across the night sky.

When I picture the atomic bomb used on Hiroshima I see in my mind a huge mushroom cloud and explosion.

I for one, think they are greatly sensationalizing the power of this impact.

Astronomers are treating this like they solved the big bang. All that happened was a curtain was blown down and there was a crash. Not that amazing.

Dont post such untrue thread names.

Ragnarok is begun!....it's just kind of anti climactic.

Indeed!

It is the return of the Northern pagan wargods!

Their first act is to smash the pretender faiths of islam and christianity!

I don't. The bomb dropped on Hiroshima was puny by today's standards. If this rock was as big as they conjecture, the force of the explosion could easily have been as large as that.

We are damn lucky this errant space stone did not land on any large city!

the explosive force of an atom bomb and an atom bomb are two VERY different things. Explosive force of one just means that if you were to pile up enough TNT so as to create the outburst of energy equal to an atom bomb (which, keep in mind, is a HUGE gap, anywhere from Hiroshima which was like 5 kilotons to a Russian bomb that was 50 Megatons, or a thousand hioshimas) then it would be the same amount of energy as the meteor that hit Norway

Most of the energy carried by the meteor woud be in the form of KE, and be transferred into the ground as seismic vibrations. (Major Volcanic erruptions can put out Megatons of energy, it's just not all dumped into the air as heat and radiation) It could have the equivalent energy of an atom bomb without producing the same effects.

Bah, where is the fun in that? I want to see explosions, huge plumes of smoke along with red hot mag-mah.:D

You know......like in the movies.

They are?

Meteorites are often interesting things to study, especially big ones. I don't think there's anythign wrong with interest on this?

Sadly impact events that do this are incredibly rare, It'd of been nice to see the comet that struck off the coast of the Yucatan peninsula and was credited in part for the death of the dinosaurs, That was a humdinger: a swathe of destruction the size of the US, Earthquakes, huge forest fires, Tsunamis and volcanoes all spawning death in all directions, even through the Earths mass and to the other side of the world. Now that's what I'm talking about :D

i saw this thread and i was like ohhhh noooo!! i have family in Norway!!

dont scare me like that, dang! ;)

The shock value of this topic would have been much greater if "?" had been replaced with "!!!". Then I could see some people getting worried, but it'd probably get it many views:)
Would be quite weird if Norway, of all countries in the world, were the target of a nuke.

Ironic, as they're the ones who award the Noble Peace Price. :)
