Military "Pictionary" Game II

OK, here's another clue:

The ships shown in the bottom picture are both American, as is the helicopter.

LOL, nice try fe3333au, but I won't give another clue until some more people guess.

Isn't that the Israeli 'accident' of attacking a US 'recon' ship? :scan:

That is correct, although you didn't give the date of June 8th, 1967.

The ship was the USS Liberty, an unarmed reconnaissance ship, except for four 50 cal machine guns to repel boarders, which in any case were deliberately knocked out immediately at the start of the attack. The ship was in international waters.

The top picture, taken from the deck of the Liberty, is of an Israeli reconaissance plane flying close to the ship, about an hour before the attack and one of eight similar overflights that day.

The second picture, taken by the captain of the Liberty, is of an Israeli Mystere jet during the strafing attack.

The third picture is of one of the Israeli torpedo boats which attacked after the strafings. The torpedo boats launched five torpedoes, one of which hit the ship and almost sank it. These boats also continually sprayed the deck of the liberty with 50 calibre machine-gun fire, thereby preventing fire fighting efforts by the crew. They also shot up the rubber lifeboats after the order was given to prepare to abandon ship, after the torpedo hit.
After the torpedo boats had done their job (or almost done it, since the ship never sank) there arrived Israeli attack helicopters with armed soldiers aboard. The Liberty crew was ordered to " prepare to repel boarders", as they thought the Israeli soldiers had arrived to finally finish the job to make sure there were no survivors to tell the tale. But the helicopter troops never boarded and instead flew off, ostensibly because at that very same time, aircraft of the US Sixth Fleet were responding to the Liberty's distress calls with orders to destroy the attackers and this information was transmitted by Sixth Fleet "in the clear" (ie, not encrypted), the Israeli's heard it and flew off.

The bottom picture is of the Liberty during it's trip to Malta the following day for temporary repairs.

Out of a crew of 294, there were 34 killed and 173 wounded.
The 40,000,000 ship was completely destroyed and sold for scrap metal in 1970.

To date, the surviving crew members are awaiting an honest congressional investigation of the incident.

OK dgfred, you guessed it so you're next.

Great pic strategycat :goodjob: , I give my turn to you again for such an
excellent pic ;) .

Its the USS Liberty after being attacked by Israel.

Edit: Dagnab it dgfred! Oh well, at least I got it right on the first guess even though I was too late. :king: ;)

OK, next one, a two-picture montage this time.

What is the significance of these pictures, ie, what type of aircraft is it, who was the pilot, where was the picture taken and what were the circumstances? Sorry, no clues.

Its the Soviet pilot and his MiG-25 with which he defected to a US base in Japan in the 1970s.

His name was Bolanko or something like that.

That's correct. Victor Belenko flew his new Mig-25 to the Japanese airport at Hakodate, Hokkaido on September 6th, 1976.
