Gotta love those military CS's. Last night I had one gifting me Ethiopian Sefari. I must of had 6 of them.
In other games I've received Modern Armor and Mech Robots. You have to treat them good though, lots of gifts and butt kissing and a spy rigging the elections goes a long way
Military CSs are by far my favorite kind especially when I get UUs, I once had an army of Kinghts, Keshiks, & Mandelku Calvary , the game was CHAOS. That is, for my enemies.
CSes have gifted units to my civilization before and my civilizations even went up to 1 in military in demographics without building a single unit in a single player before.
In an OCC game I played, I had two military CS allies and they provided my army (though with too many Conquistadors, particularly since I had no horses) - enough to defeat a late-game Inca invasion without my ever building units other than a couple of ships, and to hit my unit cap (something I've almost never experienced otherwise).
Does anyone know the rationale for City States giving UU's? is it geographic? Meaning will Budapest give you western-European flavored UUs? And Milan Legions? I don't think so. What dictates a CS giving you a unique unit at all over a basic one? How does tech advancement play in? Someone knows....
Had a game as France recently and was being given Musketmen during Musketeer era...frustrating. Sure I'd like to pay just as much for a weaker unit I can't even upgrade to my own UU.

I'm pretty sure the UU they give it just a random pick from one of the civs that aren't on the map (you can find out which one they will give by hovering on the tooltip that says 'Militaristic' on the city state screen). From what I can tell, the unit that the CS gives you depends on what techs you have researched. So in your situation, you would need to at least tech rifling to avoid city states from giving you Musketmen.
Was fun warring my last game with longbows, tercios, and Janissaries. I definitely try to pay attention to what city-states are near me, to decide when to ally with the militaristic ones (if it comes down to decide which to dump cash on).
Although the one thing I realized that I didn't pick up on the first time was that you have to be allied to get the UU. I had one city state that I think were supposed to give me Mehal Sefari, but I got a rifleman instead. Took me a minute to realize I was only friends with them at the time. Needless to say they got a little chunk of extra cash a few turns later
Tell me about it, man. I play as Greece and load the map with max civs...and max CSs. By the late game, I have units coming out my eyeballs. I literally don't build land units after the Renaissance.
Never really liked them, I would rather use the money to buy my own units, so I can control what I get. Unless they have a really awesome UU, such as CKN or Longbow, in a good strategic location, or I need them for diplo win, I dont ally them.

Sounds like you had dropped to Friend status with that CS. I found out the hard way the UUs only come from Allies when expecting Janissaries from a CS.
I'm not a huge fan of the Militaristic City-States as I am fairly peaceable. But it is a nice little bit of money to sell the unit each time you get one. I do usually keep the UU ones just because you never know when Monty or Alex will have enough of your shenanigans and drop the gauntlet.
In one game I had a military CS that kept spamming me with Conquistadors, when I had no access to horses anyway. And since a CS will apparently preferentially gift its UU for as long as that unit is available, it gets especially annoying when they have UUs that replace such long-lived units as the Knight, since you end up getting them in place of more useful things you've teched to along other paths.

I rarely use money to bribe CS. I focus on other quests and try to have max culture and faith so they come to me in the late game. Then get Arsenal of Democracy and gift the units I don't like to garner even more influence with other CS. It's a pretty vicious feedback loop in the late game.
Just started a Hun game and found that the nearby militaristic CS, M'banza-Kongo, "knows the secrets of the Keshik".
This will be fun...
