Minecraft

I've purchased minecraft a few days ago and I love it!

I ruined my first world though: I built a nice house on a hill top (or more of a plateau), I wanted to remove some trees and thought 'why not use fire? The rest of the trees are too far away for the fire to spread.' They weren't too far away for the fire to spread......

I've little luck finding iron yet, I've found some but only small deposits.....

One problem I've encountered is that when I mine prolonged periods I get lots and lots of cobblestone/gravel/dirt. Any tips?

What Karalysia said. Be the Tolkien dwarves, but worse. You'll get much more used to mining as you play the game; finding iron will not be a problem. Tips: Craft shovels and dig out underground dirt patches. Rare materials (Usually coal though) tend to hide in the corners of that. Also, if you hit a cave, try to see if you can kill the monsters inside, light it with torches, and then explore it. Caves have iron ~90% of the time, and usually a pile of it. Also, the deeper you go, the higher the chance for you to hit iron, gold, redstone, lapus lazuli or even diamond - and the higher the chance for you to hit lava always have cobblestone ready to block the lava if you dig a hole into it. It's very easy to stop after you die a couple of times from it. (...) Save the surplus cobblestone and dirt and whatever in treasure chests as well! You never know if you want to build a bigbutt gravel demonic statue.

I don't even use shovels unless I am working on a large building and/or landscaping project, I just punch the dirt or sand out of my way when mining since it still is fairly quick and doesn't waste a shovel.

Gravel is also really useful because every block of it contains 1 flint which is needed for arrow heads (you can keep replacing a block and then hitting it with a shovel until it gives up its flint).

Actually, shovels are so fast that they're very worth it. Just saying.

Really, I'd urge you to build shovels. Usually they're overabundant cobblestone and reproducable wood anyways. (I tend to make a lot of steel shovels myself.)

When mining the amount of dirt I run into is so small (like, maybe having to dig a half-dozen blocks at most) I don't see the point in carrying another tool with me. Unless as i said I am doing major landscaping which requires a lot of dirt or sand to be shoveled.

I haven't played for like 2 months, what's new?

I'd post a pic of my castle, but every time I try to upload the pic my computer freezes (issue with the firewall perhaps?). Nevertheless, my castle had all the essentials: huge lighthouse (works as a navigational beacon), underground farm, cobblestonefactory, mining complex, mob trap (with effective spawn area of 1512 square blocks), lots of storage space and elevated rail system to my other fortress. Also my spawn point was in my castle. Anyway, the funniest thing happened yesterday. I was playing Minecraft, when my computer froze up. No matter, I thought, as it was only a few minutes since I last saved. I started up Minecraft again, only to find that my whole save file was gone (yes, this was the one with my castle)

EDIT: I started another game and the same thing happened. Turns out that the saves weren't gone, when a starting a game in the same slot it loads up my old save(s). It does change my spawn point though and I lost all the stuff I had on me

I thought of a plan on how to mine a larger cavern and collect some nice amount of ores and coal while doing so. I'm digging a vertical tunnel (4 blocks wide) when I'm done, with the first tunnel I'm going to dig another tunnel of equal length at the end of my first tunnel but in a perpendicular direction.

After that I will dig out more tunnels, some perpendicular to my first and some perpendicular to my second but all spaced three blocks away.

Finally I will excavate the floor of my tunnels. This way, I'll end up with a large hall with 3x3 size pillars. It will look like that dwarven cavern from the first LotR movie.

Here is my first tunnel under construction:

"Why did you place all that cobblestone?" you ask?

This is why:

A lava pool. Does anybody have any suggestions? (I really like to continue digging my tunnel in that direction.)

Drain it and make a lot of obsidian

Use obsidian + iron blocks for your pillars in a checkered fashion. It looks very nice, at least on moderately tall pillars (7m)

Make an infinite water pool near it and make obsidian (if you need obsidian, this would be a great chance to mine it).

Recently I used a new mining technique, I just dug a water elevator right down to the bottom of the map. I hit a huge cave and found some 10 diamonds there. Also with the elevator going up and down has never been faster. Anyway, now that I've done everything I can think of Minecraft is getting boring

You make obsidian by pouring water over a lava sourceblock (flowing lava turns to cobblestone).

You don't really need the infinite pool nearby to do this, but just in case you want to know how it works I'll tell you anyway.

If you dig a 2x2 pit that's 1 block deep, and put a water sourceblock in two opposite corners, the water will fill the other corners and make them sourceblocks too. Then you can take water out and it'll replenish itself.

To mine obsidian you'll need a diamond pickaxe, so if you do this too soon you won't be able to dig through it.

Note: If the lava is more than 1 block deep, it might be a good idea to keep water flowing over it while you mine the obsidian. The water will turn newly revealed lava blocks into more obsidian, usually before the piece you just mined falls in and burns.

Note 2: There's a bug where heat sometimes passes through the corner of two blocks (the SW corner I think), so if you're not careful jumping into an obsidian pit, you can take burn damage through the wall.

Sometimes that's a good thing when making a toaster trap :mischief:.
