Minecraft

Sorry if this is in the wrong section but, I'm trying to set up a sever on one our computers that me and my friend can play on. I created the "server" and can play on it but my friend cannot connect to server, please help.

We can't do much unless you tell us what the error message is. Can Minecraft see the server?

It can suck. I used to be able to run servers with no problem a few months ago. Now it's become harder for some reason, and I only seem to manage to make it work from one of my computers and I can't explain why (which is something that makes me really angry). I used to use Hamachi too, to circumvent port forwarding and whatnot. And now I'm having trouble even with Hamachi.

At some point I managed to make it work with the default Minecraft server (no bukkit), but somehow the game started to become really choppy super fast (yes, I'm running it on the same computer I'm playing it, and it should work fine because I used to do it perfectly well with a much suckier computer).

So yeah. It's still not very user-friendly to tech and network noobs, and I think that's still one of the failings of this game. It works eventually. But every time I decide to run a server after months of not playing, it seems I have to figure out something because of a new problem and whatnot.

I found one of the rare Desert wells the other day. Any clue as to what they will be for in the future? I'm thinking desert NPCs, like nomads, or maybe even Egyptian style tombs haunted by mummies. That would be neat.

They could do a simple reskin of the zombie but make it more dangerous. Have him sit in a small pyramid-shaped tomb and guard his cool treasure (probably a pile of gold + other rare stuff).

Desert wells?

Nah, there is a new randomly generated building, a sandstone well.

I'm going to toss these minecraft questions out here:

1) Do anti-ban hacks exist?
2) What is OS firewall (which seems relevant for banning someone)?
3) How many minecraft hacks actually exist and can they break through any server?
4) After 3), are any servers truly safe?

1. No idea, but I haven't heard of any for any other game since bans usually put the account name, IP address, and/or cd key (depending on the game).

2. I'm assuming that means the firewall of your Operating System, which shouldn't have anything to do with banning people.

3. I have neither any knowledge about how many there are or what you mean by "break through any server".

Well, that's what croxis told me. I informed him of a possible hack attack on his server yesterday (today's when they supposedly attack) and I thought that this could too serious to ignore as some early April Fool's Day joke. The informant was a player who knows the hackers/griefers in real life.

Well, in that case, the question still stands for anyone else who can answer question 3.

Are you referring to hacks as in game hacks that allow players to cheat and grief with or are you referring to someone trying to DDoS (not a hack) or hack the actual machine the server it is hosted on? Either way though, that is croxis' problem.

It is unlikely that anyone knows exactly how many minecraft hacks exist and you are going to have to explain what you mean in the second part better.

EDIT: Sounds like these kids:

I'm referring to minecraft in-game hacks (former).

And which part exactly?

Maybe there are, but none that I've heard of. They are probably a bunch of script kiddies (at worst), I wouldn't worry about it (you've done all you can do anyway). It isn't like anything of value will be lost if they succeed :p

You need to give your friend the IP of the server.

I have, but when he attempts to log in he gets the "cannot reach server".

Right, so does anybody else here remember Thomas the Sheep, Minecraft's first deity?

Good times, good times.

One more person with server troubles... I never really liked versions newer than 1.7.3. And for a long time this was no problem: all I had to do was not to upgrade. However, I would like to play with some friends who are also running 1.7.3, but I cannot seem to find the 1.7.3 server file anywhere. I'm not exactly new to the internet but I can't seem to be able to find it anywhere. Does anybody have any idea what gives? I can't be the only one who prefers 1.7.3?
