The Marmota marmorata is so named due to its residence in burrows made from Canada's marble rockpiles, having a marble-like pattern on its back as camouflage. They live throughout Saskatchewan, most of Manitoba, North Dakota, and Alberta, and the southern fringes of the Northwest Territories, in tundra and taiga conditions, although they are able to survive in other areas, shedding its coat into thinner variations, indicating that they may have lived in a much wider area and thus are more adaptable, indicative of the possibility of development of intelligent behaviors. Known as the Qaallit Chuck or "Judge" Chuck, it often places the morality of other organisms into question, installing a sort of hierarchy in which one dominant male interprets morality for the entire society. When this male dies, the next powerful male becomes the dominant male, determined by territory and general popularity. However, as land is normally given to the dominant male's offspring, it tends to be a hereditary position.
