Hello everyone,

This is my first post so I hope it is not a stupid question.

I am playing my first full game and I just got steam power. The problem is that no coal appeared anywhere on the map. The map is 95% explored and no coal. The rest is some sea squares and artic areas in the 5%.

Is this a bug? Is this just a random event by the game? Is their a patch I don't have to fix the bug?

During my search I see posts about how hard coal is to see on the screen and how it may be bunched in a certain area but not this problem.

Please help and please don't tell me I just wasted all these manhours.

Try patching it. It might be an old bug. However, it won't help your current game. Normally, I say something about how hard Coal is to see, but it seems that you have covered that.

Have the Gold version and my read me file says that I have the 1.26f version. I downloaded a higher number patch for play the world and it then would not recognize the disc when trying to start the game. I had to reinstall. I believe it was 1.29f. How do you know what patch you need?

Thanks for your response.

If you have Gold, you should be fully patched.

For Vanilla Civ3, the last patch is v1.29f.

For PTW/Gold, the last patch is 1.27f.

For Conquests, the last patch is 1.22f.

But you have to be sure you get the patch for the right version, not just the number. ;)

To find out which version you have running, look at the bottom left corner of your startup menu screen.

I am 1.27f.

I am astonished that the game would generate zero coal.

Thanks for trying to help.

Could be that one or more of the other civs have built cities on coal.
Get in contact with each of them to see if they have coal to trade.
If they haven't got Steam Power yet right click on all of their cities for terrain info, tedious I know.
Then when you find it attack big time.

smeggo, that is the tedious way. Go into preferences and click on map, there is an option to clear the map. This removes the cities, but shows underlying terrain. Much easier that way to find the coal.

It is shift-ctrl-m. And in PTW doing shift-ctrl-n will give the preferences, so you can turn on or off that which you may want to see, or not see. Yeah, something like that.

You might check the Creation & Customization forum for some of the more visible resource graphics available for download. After doing that, I found coal a lot easier to locate (some of the other resources, too.)
