Beyond the Sword has a chance of that occurring if you don't build every Casting for the ship, I think. It's a trade off, more castings takes more time (and hammers), but less castings has a bigger chance for failure.

Were you at war with anyone? Was a city captured/razed? If you capture the AI city that launches their space ship, their mission fails. It is the only way to stop them once they've launched significantly ahead of you (or anyone else). So if they capture/raze your city that launched the space ship, I imagine that means you have to start over, or obliterate everyone.

This is caused by launching a spaceship that does not have a complete set of casings. The chance of success is 20% per casing, so you need the full set of 5 for the spaceship to be certain of succeeding. It is very inadvisable to economise on the casings, since you may have to start from scratch again, as in your case.

They could at least tell us what is going to happen if we don't put enough casing

There is a percentage chance of success/failure listed on the spaceship screen, I believe, when you are able to launch the ship. I build every part needed and then send it on its way. I also make sure the capital of my civ is well-stocked with troops for the duration of the mission.

It is written both in Civilopedia and in the excuse of manual that comes with BtS.

They do. Everytime you place a piece on your spaceship it gives you the odds of a successful mission. And since the alternative to success is failure...

Is it possible to destroy a SS once launched with a spy?

I was one turn away from winning and it got destroyed, i nuked all the AI just in case one of them was responsible, then rebuilt the bloody thing.

You done crashed into a asteroid. Why not build all the casings anyway? They cheap as hell and are usually the first thing you can make.

:lol:, how deliciously genocidal of you.

a spy can destroy the SS

I don't think so, but you can definitely destroy a SS once launched by capturing or razing the launcher's capital city.

Has anyone ever done this by nuking the enemy's capital and then using a massive amount of paratroopers to take it ensuring a space race victory?

that's a mistake I made in the last game. I did not complete all the casings. So I went back and loaded a save in finish the casings, and it did have a completion. I had only built four, but after completing the fifth it did complete the game. So from now on I will finish all five casings

Apologies for the thread necromancy... I just had this happen to me when I was going for my first space race victory. No, there's no success percentage shown when you are able to launch the ship. I have attached a screenshot as a proof. Only after my first ship had failed and I had built another one (too late -- I ended up just winning the time victory) I found the screen where I can see the mission success percentage (another screenshot attached). Now that I think about it, maybe you could see the percentage pre-launch too if you looked at the space ship in some other context than when completing a new part of it. Anyhow, I think that this is a pretty serious problem and am wondering that it hasn't been fixed in a patch yet.

You can see the percentage any time you look at the spaceship, apart from the times where its forced due to completing a part.

Translation: Most people will never see the percentage. :p
