Moderator Disposition and Effectiveness

I think we need specific moderators in the Avalon Hill's Diplomacy & Never-Ending Stories forums, but that's me ;).

I actually agree with Toasty on this. I feel that people moderating the forums should be experts at what they moderate. I think veteran NES players know alot more about the way things go around the NES forum than Chieftess or Padma do (no offense). Also, this next reason is NES-forum specific. Alot of "flames" and "trolls" are noticed by non-NES playing mods and the posters are banned, when in fact, alot of some of the "offensive posts" are actually part of the game. An veteran nes player such as Jason the King, Toasty, or I know what the difference between in-character and "acceptable" flames and what are not. There are however some out-of-character flames which the mods do an excellent job of picking up. However, there are many more that are just part of the game and are still picked up. This is why I feel the NES (and to a lesser extent) the diplomacy forum needs specific mods. If this goes through, I would like to volunteer as I am an active and veteran NES-player of 7 months, as well as nominate Jason the King and Toasty.

Yea, I would definately like to see that happen, there is also a lot of trolling that goes on in there unnoticed.

Also, I would like to say, that sometimes, alot of the work CT and Padma get is from that forum. Having separate NES moderators would take a burden off their backs.

Wow, I feel so young, you outrank me by 5 months even I am one of the most experienced active NESers, because many vets are leaving or cutting down drastically on participation.

For the record, I WOULD be interested in such a job.

The NES forums are kind of precarious. Because of the large role-playing element in the game, someone pretty much needs to be very familiar with it in order to be particularly effective at it, and also needs to be avaliable fairly often.

I think the decline in participation does have a lot to do with the lack of avalibility for the type of moderation that the veterans would like to have in the NES forums. The social rules that were used in the first NESs are no longer applicable, and there is no "strong arm" to really fall back on.

A specialized moderator for the NES forum could help things out there a lot for us :D.

Well, we can lobby Thunderfall for such a position if we want. I might send him a PM later tonight.

Whenever I read the acronym "NES," it always takes me a while to realize you guys aren't talking about Nintendo. :D

And does XIII use the invisibility feature, because I've never noticed him in the "users browsing this forum" list.

What I'm most curious about is if any of you volunteered or were just asked and accepted.

IMHO, he didn't appreciate your demands. I don't think the new mods ever asked for something and I'm sure it has influenced on TF's choice.
The most humble you are, the best ;)

Volunteering/demanding/pushing/etc. is not the way to become a mod. Standing up and saying "I think I would make a good mod" doesn't necessarily hurt your chances, but I doubt if it helps.

IMO, the best choice for the job is someone you have to drag kicking and screaming to the position, but, once there, they will do the best they possibly can, if only in hope of time off for good behavior. ;)

So you haven't been browsing the forums lately? Bad, moderator, bad! ;)

Edit: Just as I post this, I see XIII in the "Users browsing this forum" list. :o

While I can't comment on any specifics (not unless I don't value my innards :p), suffice to say that how things turned out were rather a surprise to me. ;)

I think Naervod was suggesting we should lobby Thunderfall for a specialized NES mod.

I think it is a good idea, and if the admin/mods have the benevolence to gift us in such a way, I thank them :).
