Mods that require 'over-riding' original artwork files...is this acceptable?

I am hoping to get opinions on whether it is acceptable to make a mod that requires players to over-ride one or more dds files within the resource/dx9 folder to get the correct look on the map.

I was thinking of recycling the road routes in my Eastern Front mod as light traffic rail routes and thus having two types of railroad. The existing one would be heavy traffic (double track) rail and all I would be doing is using the existing road routes for the lighter version. This of course requires me to mod the roadandrails_d.dds and roads_rails.dds files.

Knowing the hassle this causes if people accidentally forget to make a backup and so on...would people still be willing to play such a mod?

(Of course players always have the option to not replace any existing graphic files and just put up with roads in-game representing light rail! ;) )

They won't be read there, only the packed files are read from resource/Dx9.

Since .674 you have to put the replaced texture in Assets: http://forums.civfanatics.com/showthread.php?t=467009

edit : so that solve your moral problem, no override there, don't know if you can place them in a new subfolder, worth trying for easy uninstalling.
edit2: and remember that "normal" users won't have extracted the resources files :D

And I must ask: it doesn't works when placing them in the mod with VFS to true ?

Or with the above + Reload Landmark System in the mod properties ? (but this one is still reported as causing random crashes)

In my honest opinion, it creates too much of a hassle for end users.

I guess I will have to consider it as an 'eye-candy' option to my mod as opposed to necessary.

Gedemon, thanks for the heads up on file locations as I have yet to actually do it and you probably saved me some grief!
