I've decided not to build too many wonders, as I would like to claim some land first. Unfortunately, Mansa Musa has already settled one of the spots I really wanted to settle, and it seems like Genghis and Mansa have a lot more land to settle on than I do, as Genghis has just eliminated Hatty.
Anyway:
Started worker first, as TMIT suggested, teched AH first. As soon as worker was out, started building a farm, which I let finish so that I have better growth while building the pasture for the pigs. After that I built 2 warriors and then a settler.
First city settled was New York, for the horses and commerce to come. Capital than trained a warrior and then another worker. At some point I was very lucky and one hut offered mining, so I immediately started researching BW. After it was done, I've noticed that I had copper to the east, in the BFC of one of my intended settling spots, so that was my third city, Boston, early GP farm.
After BW I teched the wheel to connect copper and horses, trained one or two chariots, then an axeman. Teched writing after the wheel, then pottery. (I know about discounts, and I really want to know which order is best: I do need libraries, and I can't help but think that it's actually more advantageous to have libraries sooner and have the potential for +25% efficiency for all techs to come, then to have a measly discount on writing) After writing came pottery, then alphabet. Unfortunately, I could not get IW after alphabet, so it looks like one of my jungle river cities is still to be very poor and I'm still to go without gems for quite some time.

I also won't get to settle another city I wanted to settle in the jungle, and that's another addition to the nuisance. After alphabet I immediately went into currency.
Oh... forgot to mention... somewhere in there I settled my fourth city, Philly, terrible location pre-iron working, but I had to take it, or else Mansa would have very likely settled it in stead. I don't yet know if it might have been better to just give it up and war Mansa at some point and steal it, but for now, I'm glad I have it. It sure sux as a city, but there will be a point when this changes.
After that I settled Atlanta, my second early commerce city, then Chicago because I wanted to make sure that Philly can't get disconnected and because there's not much to complain about another copper source, is there?
I still want to settle one commerce city south of the Atlanta-New York axis, one city for the whales, one for the fish+silver, one to further connect Philly to my lands and I want to take a barb city north of Boston. I only hope Genghis doesn't take it first, but regardless, I'll have to go to war against him sooner or later and I have a feeling that he's going to be technologically backwards soon. I just hope I survive until that "soon".
Ideas and questions:
1. I only wish to build the GL, of all the early wonders, as teching masonry is too expensive at the moment, given my steps, and building wonders is also to expensive considering that I seriously need to catch up military-wise and that I still need to settle some cities and still need some workers. Is it ok? Would it have been acceptable in this game to sacrifice land for some of the early wonders? The Oracle comes to mind as probably the biggest loss of mine in this game.
2. I am used to creative leaders, so I'm not too comfortable with non-creative leaders. So far, with all non-creatives, I've used libraries for popping borders. I do think that monuments are a waste, and that mysticism is too expensive early on for the benefits it offers. Am I wrong? Am I terribly wrong? What do you think about this?
