Monarch Student Prime XII Washington

1854 AD Cultural Victory

Spoiler :

Not much of interest to tell, I just continued to build wonders and settled some more cities. In total I had 9 cities.
I researched music and then currency. I settled the G.A.
My missionary was sent to hattie and she converted.

Some more dates.

500 AD Genghis converts
500 AD another G.Prophet
660 AD G.Scientist which I use for a academy
720 AD Sistine Chapel
820 AD Mansa converts
880 AD I found Islam
940 AD Ap.Palace I figured I could use this for a religious victory but I didn’t know
Every civ needed to have the A.P.’s religion.
960 AD Angkor Wat
1130 AD Spiral Minaret
1170 AD Genghis dow’s on Hattie (the fool)
1250 AD Uni. Of Sankore
1350 AD first to Liberalism (I take Nationalism)
1400 AD Mansa offers to be my vassal and I accept
1430 AD Genghis and hattie make peace, at this point Genghis only has 5 cities left
And is hopelessly behind in tech. It seems that if he doesn’t conquer someone in the beginning he can’t keep up.
Somewhere around this time I get some oil event revealing the locations of all oil. Didn’t even know about this one.

1450 AD Taj Mahal and Hermitage. I also find out that I didn’t up the culture slider after Liberalism but the espionage one. Stupid mistake.:(

1565 AD meet Saladin (Buddhism) and Wang Kon (Confusianism) and shortly after that Willem (Hinduism).

1655 AD defensive pact with Hattie.

1853 is my last turn and I take one of Genghis’s cities just for the fun of it, Saladin immediately dow’s on me but I win the next turn.

It was a very different game from the last one and I liked how I had to play differently from how I usually do (again). Looking forward to the next one.:)

Some pics.

Emp/Normal 1870 Cultural Vic

Spoiler :
This was a rough game for me. The diplo situation was very sticky and I made some bad moves that didnt help either.

Hatty, GK, and Mansa all founded their own religions, and they would remain in those religions for the rest of the game except for Mansa who switched out to Free Religion eventually. Now, while it did help in that the AI's were often at each others throat, it also prevented me from taking a religion for a good portion of the early game, and made tech trading with Hatty/GK pretty much non-existent for almost the entire game. I finally decided to go with GK's religion because Mansa would trade with me anyways, Hatty was too far away to be much of a threat and was always behind on tech, and the diplo points with GK ensured that Hatty or Mansa was his preferred target most of the time. He still DoW'ed me twice during the game but it was easy to repel since he was seriously backward in tech.

I wasn't sure what to do at the beginning of the game. The land wasn't that great except for the capital, the large grassland area just to the east with the river, and up near the gems by Mansa. With Stone and Marble in the capital BFC I eventually decided to go for a Cultural win, though as usual Dom or Diplo probably would have been faster, but also a lot more time intensive. I used the capital to spam every wonder that gave GA points, cottaged up the two riverside grassland sites, and used the other cities as weak production sites to keep enough military to repel GK's DoW's.

Once I hit Lib I switched over to Free Speech, had Rep running from Pyramids, ran a bunch of specialists in my capital and cranked up the culture slider. Capital ended up producing about 12-13 GA's, most of which were saved up. Bombed the two cottage cities on the same turn my capital hit legendary and took the win at 1870AD.

Overall definitely not a very well played game on my part. I'm pretty weak on cultural victories to begin with and I made a big mistake leaving a barb city up too long and Ghengis took it before me, allowing him to settle a couple extra cities down in my territory that would have been blocked off had I gotten there sooner.

Hey Mike would you mind if I hosted the next MS Prime? I've read TMIT's guide and I think I could pull it off. We could like cycle it so you do one week, then I do next, etc. What do you think? I know next is Boudica, but I don't think highlands would be appreciated by many people, so if I could I would do fractal or hemispheres.

I cant see Mike complaining. I do wonder who owns the rights to all these series.

Oh what the hell...THE CAP MECHANICS ARE BROKEN.

Well that sure seems to be. Me being a Giant, with all my own vassals. Huge tech lead, and an INFINIT KILL RATIO... AND nuking them so they can't even get their cities to do anything.... And the bastards still THINK they have a chance without capitulating?

I wouldn't mind this busted mechanic so much if I was connected by land, that way I could take their whole empire over with a single tank LOL. But I usually can't be hassled in inter-continental wars to build boats and do a clean-up. Oh well... Another Firaxis idea that wasn't so thought out.

I have no problem with this Big Time. I just wanted to continue a series which helped me climb up from prince to emperor.

I was planning Boudica - Hemisphere's map. But it's your call.

Just let me know either way. The first 2 maps I didn't alter the map at all. I would have prolly edited next map to make it a decent challenge. Not as easy as Wahsington and not as hard as Sury.

Mike

Yeah I'm all for your continuation and it's helped me climb from monarch to emperor, which I am trying to become more comfortable at now.

Hemispheres and Continents are too much alike IMO so I would like to do a Fractal. Thanks for the opportunity Mike, this way you can still play the map blind :) I'll get a friend to check the map to make sure we're not isolated.

I'll get it out on tuesday, thanks Mike!

Edit: Oh yeah, one thing. When you make the 3 diff. dificulties you add starting techs (archery for Monarch, archery+ hunting for Emp, archery, hunting, and agriculture for Imm) and delete the handicaps, right? Then you make the player handicap match the difficulty level?

You don't have to mess with the player handicaps. I'm not convinced you need to mess with the line handicap= at all now, though if you do what I did in the guide it won't hurt.

More important is the beginunit/endunit lines, because the # of AI units varies by difficulty. Even if you just give the AIs archery, a game played on immortal with beginunit swiped will barely be different from regular immortal at all (I've not seen someone detect the difference via gameplay), so IMO one can get by with just a noble and monarch save with beginunit swept, but I'm just lazy I guess :p.

@TMIT
Spoiler :

I've just seen your report, so I want to ask:
1. Did you run a SE?
2. How long could you go without settling a science city? I mean... no cottages for a long time, at least that's how it looks to me. I don't seem to like farms much, so I might be over-cottaging. :) Washington had as many cottages as food permitted in my game, for instance. If I could understand the challenges and benefits of not having cottages till current era, for instance, it might help me get a better picture. :D

Thanks

I've never won on Emperor (normally I play on Monarch) but reading that this should be a not too difficult map, I've tried it, hoping that with your help this could be my firts Emperor's win :p

So, I'll be very grateful if you could give me some advices about my mistakes (to learn) and some tips to how go ahead form here (to win :D)

4000BC to Liberalism
Normal speed - Huts/random events ON
Spoiler :

Having stone, I decided to go for the Great Wall and Stonehenge that I've gotten.
Then, seeing that I'd a good amount of decent land avalaible, I REXed peacefully placing a couple of city to the north to block the rivals and then converted to Judaism sharing it with all others neighbours in the continent.

There was only a war: GK declared on Hatsheput (even if Mansa was is worst enemy) and gained a city, then nothing else.

Mansa asked me to become my vassal and I accepted (probably a big mistake, wasn't it?).

I'm not well in confidence with vassal's mechanics... I can't come back from it if MM doesn't want, does it?
What am I gaining from it? Beyond the defensive pact, only that I can order him what to research?

Anyway, now I'm 1 turn from winning Lib race.
What have I to pick and what kind of overall strategy do you suggest me?

Thank you very much :)

Hi

didnt have a chance to try and continue till last night and I gave up :(

Spoiler :
Salad was HUGE. He had like 28 cities on his own and vassaled wang and willie. I made a move to try and take out GK and I am winning that war but meanwhile Salad just WHOMPED Hattie. He was taking like 2 cities of her per turn and she capped with just one city left.

I am kicking GK's you know what but right now but Salad is in leage by himslef he has Infantry and I dont even have rifling finished. My power rating is number 2 and I have 3x power of next one behind me but I am .3 yeah thats POINT 3 behind salad. He already has the land for a dom win and soon as cities he takes from hattie starts growing and he gets biology or something he will get pop needed too. and I have NOOOO way to stop him.

Even though I am winning war with GK I am having to spend ALL my time on it pumping units and dont have time to even TRY and catch up with Salad. I cant even afford to end war with GK. He is willing to cap but taking him as a vassal means I will lose pleased status with Salad and he will come after me. If I let GK stay on his own then most likely Salad will just eat him up and definitely get dom win.

Meanwhile salad is teching like two techs to my one and even willie teching faster than me. Even trading now is messing me up. I have lib (hattie won lib race for all the good it did her) and salad doesnt but he wont trade me ANYTHING for it (ok not ture he might trade me riifling for it but I am 3 turns from rifling already on my own and Im already getting whomped without having to get ripped out THAT bad in trades.) I did trade Mil Trad to willie for econ but then like two turns later GK sending curriassors in his stacks which is making war last just THAT much longer. It still too little too late for gk but by time war is over and I get everything sorted game gonna be looooong over. SO I just decided to give up and let salad have his win.

Oh wells this is like my 4th whomping in a row on monarch (5 if you consider fact that I tried Augie game TWICE and lost both time. Yeah I lost as ROME, TWICE so THAT should tell you ALL you need to know bout whether Im good enuff for monarch) so back to prince for me but at least now y'all can stop nagging bout how I should be moving up a level hehe :p

Playing Custom Scenario, even with huts off, doesn't make them disappear. One should probably manually remove them in world builder. I didn't want to see the map before playing it, so huts on it is.

Normal/Monarch, to 1953 Space Victory.

Spoiler :

I went on scouting with my warrior and then there was this WTF moment...

Initial tech path was AH-> Horseback (hut)-> Mining-> BW-> Masonry-> Wheel-> Pottery-> Writing.
I built the Piramids in 1120BC, hoping for a Great Engineer (and a free second wonder). I also switched to Representation for the happy cap and research bonus.
Eventually came out a GS, so no luck there.

I cut off the lower half of the continent and settled it.

Mansa and Genghis went for Hinduism, so I adopted their religion. Hatty had the Christian holy city and state religion, so Genghis was constantly fighting with her and vice versa. He also grew quite big. Mansa was limited to 5 cities (one of which was on a 1 land tile island). We were teching very fast and Mansa, being the tech whore he is, was willing to trade everything with me.

Liberalism in 1070 AD. I switched for catholicism, converted Musa and bribed him and Hatty to start a war with Genghis. In the meantime, I teched for rifles.

Then I steamrolled the technologically backwards Genghis in a few turns, until he capitulated. I then felt such a big army was not going to waste with one tech backwards neighbour (hatty) and one very weak (Mansa with no rifles and few cities). I moved my forces down to vassal Mansa to give me a steady supply of techs. Before I even started the war he asked to become my vassal. Fine by me, two vassals in two turns :)

I then went for Hatty and the catholic holy city, as the religion was spread all over the continent by this time. She posed no resistance, and after two cities she wanted to capitulate. I bunny-hopped to her capital and holy city, took them, and only then let her capitulate.

At this point the whole continent was essentially mine. Sometime during all this I discovered the other continent. Initially they were a little backwards, but during wartime I lost research momentum and they catched up.

Since Saladin hated me for my religion, and I was not going to change it (money and GP from pacifism) I had no option to win diplomatically. I decided to catch up with techs and see if I could go for domination. I researched emancipation quickly, to plunge them all into unhappiness. Then communism to reduce maintenance costs. Sadly, Mansa (of all people) beat me to Kremlin.

At some point I realized that since I don't have enough espionage to see the other guys power graphs and didn't have that much of a (military) tech lead, I was going for space. I had 5-6 ~100 hammer cities, fast research and a vassalized tech whore. What else do you need?

Beeline for robotics, space elevator, and then I built all the parts in the timespan of a few turns.

Wang Kong and Willem were going space too. Willem also was trying for cultural, and he was actually quite close, but then the idiot declared on Saladin... I dogpiled on him, dropped some mech infantry and cannons(!) on his coast, went to the nearest almost-legendary city and razed it to the ground. Then he owned my forces, but the deed was done. Peace treaty in a few turns and it was as nothing happened :)

In 1943, mankind launched a spaceship for Alpha Centauri.

Ten years later, the game was over.

The stats:

Actual play time was actually something below 3 hours (two sessions 1,5h each), but I left the computer with Civ on when I was not playing, so it built up.
I never built the UU of UB.
The late game problems with health were resolved by building hospitals and pub transports.

Also, sorry for the low screenshot count, I wasn't planning to make a report out of this game.

I might be jumping to emperor soon, but let's try Boudica for now.

Hi everyone, I'm a new member here, been lurking on and off for awhile now and finally decided to start posting. I know I'm a little late to this post, hopefully I can get around to the Monarch Student Boudica game soon.

Monarch/Epic 1820 Conquest Victory

Spoiler :

The strong start on this game allowed me to take several early wonders including: SH, parthenon, GW, and the great library. Popped lots of Great Spys in my capital and stold some techs from egypt and mansa.

I thought the land had decent hammers and not a lot of commerce so I massed swords/ha's/axes/cats and preceeded to vassal everyone on my island.

I should have went for culture or even diplomacy victory but I don't feel very comfortable with those so I decided to invade the other island go for dom/conquest. Saladin was the strongest on that island and his unique unit, camel archers, were very strong against my maces/trebs but luckily I got rifling asap and upgraded to riflemen which were very effective against the camels.

Wang Kon was the last to fall on the other island and I got an 1820ad conquest victory. I don't feel 100% comfortable on monarch yet so this was a nice win and hope to play in the next of the series.

Having no feedback from my previous post, I decided to go wrong on my own :king::D:goodjob:

Luckily, I achieved my first win on Emperor! :trophy3rd:

Liberalism -> 1816 UN victory

Spoiler :

I've choosen Nationalism from winning the Lib-race, built TM and started a GA while researching (or trading for, I don't remember) Machinery.
So, with Maces and Caths I've declared towards GK which capituled.

Then I've consolideted the economy and, when I felt ready, I've worried against Hatty with Cavalry, cannons and some CR3 unit upgraded to Rifles and Granadiers:

Spoiler :

I've wiped out her. Meanwhile, I've built UN and made some gifts to WvO which became pleased and voted for me:

Spoiler :

Thanks to Mike for hosting this game, it made me happy :p
