Monarch Student XI - Washington

Blah, I officially fail at playing multiple games at once. Accidentally overwritten my save not once (the first 10 AD save) but TWICE. Second time around 1400AD when I was about to wipe
Spoiler :
Will
with cuirassiers.

Spoiler :
Spammed cities all over the archipelago and I was really starting to take off on the tech board. Can't be arsed to play it again.

yeah that's rough. I always just leave the name monarch student X, or lonely X or whatever so i can keep track of which save is which - and so i don't ever save over anything accidentally.

Is it too early to talk about the next monarch student game? :) Any ideas for leader or map yet?

Nope, it's not too early. I'll post the next game tomorrow (will be on thursday so michmbk can play when the lady's out  ).
The leader is Mehmed (wich was one of my top candidates for a while, but the Suleiman NC game popped up). Map script still to define, but we'll return to some more traditional map.

That's not gonna help convince TMIT to use this for the next let's play - since he used him for the first one. But we haven't played him so it sounds good to me.

As far as the map it doesn't matter too much to me. I'd just say definitely not one with a million islands. Maybe at least 2-3 AIs on our landmass (if not all). Standard continents or fractal? I'm sometimes a fan of lower the sea level and adding 2 more AIs. You'd really want to look at the map first though, and reload until there isn't any AI's with way too much, or way too little land - and maybe go +/- an AI until it looks good. You probably don't want to spoil it for yourself that much though. Maybe just stick to normal settings/default #.

Ha ha - I was actually too busy this past weekend to finish this one and last night got sidetracked on another game here. So I need to try to finish this tonight and be ready to go on the next one tomorrow.

Next one is up tomorrow eh, hope I bust out of this losing streak. Ever since you asked me about trying deity Ai I've lost uh... 1-2 immortals per day (yeah I need a healthier hobby). Almost just went back to emperor since winning was much more fun to do when I got home from work. A few were close, but I'm regressing! Thankfully having to give a synopsis of what I'm doing tends to focus my thinking better. Don't want to look bad over the internet after all.

Finally round 2 - Emperor Epic 10 AD to 1080 AD

Spoiler :

Desperately trying to right a very poor start. Teching HBR mainly for trade bait, which worked – this helps me limp to COL:

Really was hoping I wouldn’t get this, wanted the gold – oh well:

Building research to limp to COL for courthouses. Whip them in, and now things are looking up a bit. Still struggling, but at least my economy is afloat. Bulb Philosophy hoping for some trade bait. And it paid off – two trades netted monotheism, calendar, construction and metal casting and gold. 1 scientist for 5 techs – not bad. Starting to build up my force to beat down Willem too. But I figure why not take all the nice barb cities first and keep willem cozy for tech trades for awhile. Starting here:

And here:

Now need all my nice harbors to accentuate the overseas trade power. GLH would have been ridiculous on this map. Build them, start teching toward lib as it seems like I might have a shot. Was building this for gold, but again, no one beat me to it.

Cut off here, about 15 turns from lib. Tech board and empire:

Darius could beat me to lib if that’s where he heads, but I may trade around education to deficit tech my way to it. Feels like I’m in much better shape than at 10 AD though, because I know how to maximize this type of map better than the AI. Can likely take Willem if I want either now or later. Have Heroic Epic almost built to start seriously churning out units. This game is sure to be a long slog though, with all the islands and ferrying needed.

I started playing but I don't think I'm going to finish.
Spoiler :

The AI is really garbage on this mapscript. You basically build the GLH and then just spam for the victory. I'm in a slow war against Willem now, but the AI basically has no production on this map. MoM was built around 800AD on immortal. Waaaaay late. I took astro from lib around 1100 AD. I've been playing very sloppy and I'm still more advanced than the AI. And by sloppy, I mean I'm running a 10+ city empire with 4 workers

I got to about 1700 AD last night and finally gave up - not from sure defeat, but from the tedium of the micro involved - quick wrap in spoiler:

Spoiler :

I think where I left off it was down to me and Saladin as the only possible winners. I settled a bunch more islands, including a fantastic production site with 3 seafood, 4 workshops and Moai. Problem was that was the only thing on that island, so I constantly had to ferry troops back and forth. Invaded Willem and kicked him off the main island, and was about to finish his other small island cities too. Amsterdam had 7-8 wonders, including Spiral and the hindu shrine. So my gold skyrocketed by 50 per turn from that city, and would be even more with bank, market, mall, etc.. once I built them.

At that point, I had a veteran army of trebs, knights and elephants, and a whole bunch of galleons, and had teched physics and was on my way back to steel---combustion. Basically was at tech parity with Saladin and ahead of everyone else. Was pleased or better with 3 other civs, so diplo or destruction would be the plans, and it would be a question of whether or not I could take Saladin, as he surely had a super shrine city as he usually does.

But the micro of ferrying troops everywhere across all my island cities was getting to be too much. I couldn't keep track of where all my galleons were, and that's usually the point where the tedium gets to me. So I'll count this one as a tie between me and Saladin, which keeps me running about 75% on emperor so far.
