In the article I posted, O'Neil cites a pretty authoritative study which he says showed that Christianity would almost certainly have overtaken the classical world given only this factor:

(b) once committed to Christ the pagan past was abandoned

Because of how it spread organically via family and patronage networks. Other factors only sped up the process.
