Why me???...

I am more easily persueded(sp?) no breakie my kneesies...

I wasnt "fighting" I was trying to understand what C-N-P means specifically...I always say my stuff is C-n-P cause honestly, unless you draw the building on the Green b/g by hand, they are all c-n-p...even if you have a model...as far as I can tell...I dont care, I just wanted to make sure not to say something was original, when it "wasnt"

Ogedei, do please resubmit.

My 2 cents: How over inflated has this competition become? Is it really worth the fight and argument over what can and cannot be voted upon? I think you guys have been unnecessarily trolling each other. Allow the conversions and such. I put my trust in the intelligence level of CFCers to honor those who put in the work.

I second Olorin on everything. End

@Flamand: Would it be possible to change my submission for the mount of August? I may have a cut n' paste unit ready before the end of the month and it will be more complete than the Ring. But I still have some work to do with it.

Well, I've used all three methods(cut and paste, semi-original work and completely original work) and thought the amount of work is not the same, I have worked for all, and it wasn't 2 seconds for CnP either(Since often I had to alter portion of it too). Look at Lizardmen rule work or what a guy did with the warrior and the horse(a nice centaur), or W.I.N.T.E.R's work.

It has nothing to do with originality, but the love one invests in doing something that's meant for a game and not taken seriously. Fact is the community wouldn't be around for the grafix wizards to get in, if it weren't for cut n ' pasters. And initially, all people could do was cut and paste anyway.

And in fact, even the people who just changed palettes often did very inovative work. and also, if you get a photo, how does one know were you acquired it? You might have spend hours, days, weeks or even months to get that special, one of a kind, unique and atmospherical picture.

Whatever it takes, as long as your heart is well into it.

Which is why I'm proposing to keep the CnP's and create three categories for the future, Completely original works, Semi original works(were you used another's models for example) and CnP or similar. If the voters decide, it's no real difference, not like winning will fundamentally change your life.

Thus all creators still can get the incentive to create, and the community still needs all of them, no matter how insignificant the contribution.

ussually professionals have to have talent so as to work for game companies

Ok here we disagree...I think competeing against Aaglo and Orthanc in the unit comp is WORSE than competeing against "professional" Civ3 units...

honestly, some of the buildings/cities you po out are as good/better than "professional" work...

all it takes to be a "professional" graphic designer, is the right school, and getting the right shot..."professional" doesnt mean "best" as I think Kinboats/Aaglos/Orthancs/Rips(the list goes on) units have shown

I just think it should all be one catagory, and the creator must specify what type(original/semi/c-n-p) it is...leave it to voters to decide(Let The People Be Heard!!)...more categories=more work for Flamand=less chance these comps will keep happening....so with that said, I say we all agree that this is a friendly comp...and leave it at that...

I waited for a day or so to see what kind of conclusion would be reached by the Vox Populi, but I really don't like where this is going so I think it is about time I end these discussions.

Ogedei, consider your submission is included. I, and with me most people on this site, couldn't care less about the number of colors there are in the preview. Stricly speaking you will find color differences between the ingame situation and the preview for many unit submissions because either the flc is converted (with sometimes disastrous results) or the original bmp's are put in an animated gif with a different palette. My conclusion: no submissions will be refused based on palette.

As for the discussion on originality it seemed to have taken quite an elitist turn that is really against what I tried to do with these competitions in the first place, which is stimulate people to make more and better units. This is not an art galery, this is a site with people that love to make stuff for a game that they enjoy and that they want to share with others.
While in any other circumstances I would completely agree with Varwnos and his his concepts of originality, it is not suitable for these competitions. I will keep a closer look on people stating their own contribution to files and the permission by previous artists. This I percieve as essential.

I hope both arguments will be finished now as they have absolutely no added value to this thread at all... The competitions will stay the way they are.

Well, it doesn't need be more work for Flamand, not even different threads, people state what category their work is and voters get three votes one for each category. Most boards have a poll feature which is good enough, or two volunteers can help Flamand, but in any case it's just a suggestion, since people seem to be bugged with it.

Truth be said, even without this thread, I'd like to believe people will still produce graphics for Civ 3. This is just for some fun way to look at them, right? Not to win, and no regrets if one loses. Oh, and sorry for filling this thread with off-topic posts. This is my last one here.

"and no regrets if one loses."

I honestly think there are no losers...only a monthly winner, and the other submissions...a loser IMO means failure, which none of the graphics(even low voted ones) are...I concider ANYONE using my graphics a win :)

I knew that i moved too soon. Its ok, Pinky, tomorrow we will try to conquer the world again :hmm:

I can live with files being titled so as to show they are of a different category. I suggest that the same happens with altered palette graphics as well though (at least static ones, for which there is, after all, only one image to see, and so the actual pic can be argued to be too significant to allow an altered palette without pointing it out. Also i am not at all accepting that it is difficult/problematic etc to save in png form. No argument can be made in favour of that) :)

I think I was pretty clear when I said:
The competitions will stay the way they are.
So new split up competitions, no new preview requirements, nothing... If you want to have the perfect comparison, just download all the competitors and study them any way you want at your own leasure... ;)

But don't worry Brain tomorrow is a new day... :D

Ok ;)

Can you change my entry to this:

meet the "western european industrial set" (i run out of impressive names due to the large number of euro ind sets i have made :shake: ). I may change its title, but here is the preview pic:

Let me guess: the one graphic per nomination rule has been abandoned as well

In that case i will be nominating the anglo-saxon, the western european, and the ottoman industrial set, as "balcan wars mod city sets" :p

@ Flamand: really, there should be some rules here, else it will become something very pointless.

I changed my submission for pcx-files
I don't see why you should, it's obviously a set. Remember, it's Flamand who should say if it's acceptable or not.

And no, I don't mind if varwnos changes his submission to a balkan city set, as long as it's a clear set, and not a random collection of cities.

A set of related files can be considered as one submission as stated in a previous occasion. Therefore both aaglo's and Mrtn's submissions are acceptable...

I'm getting a little tired of this... If you want an overregulated competition, by all means start one yourself. Just let me do this one my way please... :p

I nearly had

:hmm: I do not think that i am unjustified in my observations. After all it would help to think of the differences between one graphic and a set. What exactly does one value? The one file? The overall effect? What is the overall effect? Do you not care about what the competition actually is about?
I am just used to examining things and so would seem to be out of place in more casual affairs, although since i am in the clear minority here i can only back away from my request.

I'm going to be entering 1 of the 4 Lhs I did recently, but the problem is I can't decide on which one to enter.... Maybe a little help from you guys?

Which should I enter?
